Wartość czasu jakościowego w antropologii kulturowej

    No full text
The goal of this article is to illustrate different ways of understanding quality of time by social sciences and humanities. The article starts with a brief description of Durkheim’s concept of social time and Bergson’s lived time – which he called ‘real duration’. Then the attention is turned to historical and cultural anthropology and scholars within those fields – Edmund Leach, Edward Hall, Aron Guriewicz, Jacques Le Goff, Clifford Geertz – to name a few, who emphasized quality changes in how value of time has been understood over ages. Finally, modern concepts of point time are presented, which suggest changes quality of time occurring in Western societies during XXI

Jak stworzyliśmy zagładę? Inscenizacja postapokaliptycznego świata w LARP-ie

    No full text
The author analyzes a post-apocalyptic convention called OldTown, during which LARP takes place. He does so in the context of Victor Turner's theory on the communitas/societas opposition and liminoidity in contemporary culture. The main purpose of the article is to indicate that OldTown has a rite de passage structure, thanks to which individuals participating in the rally exist outside the social structure. In fact, they create a community of communitas detached from commonly recognized norms and principles. In order to support particular claims, the author cites quotations originating from the statements of OldTown participants, which are the result of ethnographic field research conducted in August 2010

Radioactive waste as socio-technologicall hybrid in Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory

Przedmiotem, a zarazem podmiotem badań są promieniotwórcze odpady, wytwarzane szczególnie podczas produkcji energii w elektrowniach jądrowych. Ujęcie wypalonego paliwa jądrowego w charakterze podmiotu o sile sprawczej wikła go w szerszą zbiorowość. Promieniotwórcze śmieci, choć tabuizowane, w rzeczywistości mają funkcję kulturotwórczą.The object and concurrently the subject of this study is radioactive waste; the byproduct of nuclear energy production. The author regards nuclear waste as a the key actors in the Polish Nuclear Power Program. Bruno Latour’s Actor-Network Theory is adopted as the analysis framework. This theoretical framework is utilized to bring up arguments of supporters and opponents of the investment in the nuclear power plant. The author reconstructs both human and non-human actors in terms of their links to nuclear waste management. Regarding nuclear power waste as a subject with its own agency, involves this subject in a larger collective. Even though radioactive waste is exposed to tabooisation, in fact it has the power of creating culture

Anticipatory anthropology – anthropological future study

The author deliberates the fusion of two disciplines – futurology and cultural anthropology. She tries to indicate some anthropological tools and methods which are suitable to deduce cultural future and advances a thesis that the future is nowadays an inevitable area of study for cultural anthropology. By making the critical analysis of social threats, hopes and by critical observation of contemporary cultural trends anthropologists are able to construct the possible view of future. The project, described in the text, aims at preparing for changes and proving that anthropology enables predicting the future of the cultur

The Experience of Pandemic Time in Late Capitalism

    No full text
The subject of the article is the transformation of social time in the pandemic reality. The situation caused by COVID-19 provided a unique opportunity to observe sudden changes in the social rhythm. In the considerations conducted from the perspective of time studies, the author tries to specify what these changes are, and also considers how social time is shaped in the economy of late capitalism. The observations show that changes in the organization and experience of social time during a pandemic are shaped mainly on the basis of three categories: power, technology and work. The experience of the crisis of the usual feeling of time and of the uncertainty about the future, resulted in the rise of questions pertaining to the new concepts of time, the effects of this transformation and the upcoming social changes

Antropolog na obcym terenie? Nowe perspektywy – nowe możliwości

    No full text
The anthropology of culture is currently facing the challenges of the constantly changing reality, the world of "flickering meanings", which somehow forces researchers to adopt new attitudes and concepts, and sometimes modify the research field traditionally assigned to a given field. It has developed over many years as the science of "Others". It was most often practiced in small, exotic or possibly rural communities, and its aim was to view a foreign reality, while exerting any influence on the surveyed community was perceived as an undesirable effect or as a methodological error. Of course, there were initiatives that went beyond the presented paradigm - Sola Taxa and his "Lisa Project" can be given as an example, which, despite the fact that it became an inspiration for many anthropologists, was at the same time subjected to severe criticism, not only from the scientific community

Między czasem ekologicznym a ekologią czasu w kulturze przyspieszenia

Time and space are concepts that form an indivisible entity in the concept of ecological time. The process of separating these ideas in Anglo-American culture began along with the acceleration of technological development. It resulted in a quick, almost instantaneous rate of life, which affects destructively both individuals and general public. What is the main postulate of the ecology of time is to stop the negative effects of acceleration, and re-integrating the idea of time and space in the practice of everyday life

Critical data studies meets discard studies: Waste data reflectivity in digital urban waste tracking system

    No full text
This article examines the implementation and impact of the Digital Urban Waste Tracking System (DUWTS) in Poland, a smart waste management technology designed to enhance waste segregation practices in urban environments. DUWTS combines public administration and private sector efforts to oversee proper waste disposal through advanced dataveillance technologies. The system utilizes electronic ground containers equipped with sensors and QR codes to weigh and record waste, aiming to improve recycling levels and manage waste data. The purpose of the research is to critically explore the concept of "waste data reflectivity," highlighting the socio-technological implications of data representation in waste management. The major findings reveal significant distortions and errors in data reflection, impacting various stakeholders, including municipalities, waste disposal companies, and residents. The study concludes that while DUWTS represents a technological advancement, it also perpetuates existing challenges in waste management by obscuring true complexities and responsibilities. Integrating critical discard studies and critical data studies, the article provides a nuanced understanding of the data-driven waste management systems' complexities and challenges
