The arcade of Struthers: an anatomical study.

    No full text
Item does not contain fulltextBACKGROUND: The arcade of Struthers has been described as possible cause of compression of the ulnar nerve but several authors and our own experience have doubt cast on its existence. We, therefore, performed an anatomical study to determine whether or not the arcade of Struthers exists. METHODS: Ten arms from fresh frozen cadavers were dissected. Special attention was given to the fascial layers of the medial aspect of the upper arm and the medial intermuscular septum and their relation ships to the ulnar nerve. FINDINGS: An arcade of Struthers was not found in any specimen. INTERPRETATION: The arcade of Struthers does not exist and is not an anatomical structure, but a man-made construct

Bilateral median nerve compression at the level of Struthers' ligament - Case report

Struthers' ligament syndrome is a rare cause of median nerve entrapment. Bilateral compression of the median nerve is even more rare. It presents with pain, sensory disturbance, and/or motor function loss at the median nerve's dermatomal area. The authors present the case of a 21-year-old woman with bilateral median nerve compression caused by Struthers' ligament. She underwent surgical decompression of the nerve on both sides. To the authors' knowledge, this case is the first reported bilateral compression of thp median nerve caused by Struthers' ligament. The presentation and symptomatology of Struthers' ligament syndrome must be differentiated from median nerve compression arising from other causes

    Ultrasound demonstration of Struthers' ligament

Abstract: The supracondylar process is a bony spur at the anteromedial surface of the distal humerus. It is associated with the Struthers' ligament, running from its apex to the medial epicondyle. Symptoms may occur due to fracture and entrapment of nerves (most frequently the median nerve) and/or blood vessels underneath the structures. We report a case in which we used MRI and high-frequency ultrasound to investigate the supracondylar process, the Struthers' ligament, and its surrounding structures. Ultrasound is a useful alternative to MRI during the workup of potential entrapment syndromes
