Charm cross section and fragmentation fractions in pp collisions with ALICE (12'+3')
In this contribution, the latest , and the first , and baryon measurements performed with the ALICE detector at midrapidity in proton--proton collisions at TeV and TeV at the LHC are presented. Recent measurements of baryon-to-meson cross-section ratios at midrapidity show significantly higher results than in and ep collisions, suggesting that the fragmentation of charm is not universal across different collision systems. Thus, measurements of charm-baryon production are crucial to study the charm-quark hadronisation in pp collisions and the possible difference with respect to and ep collisions.
In addition, the baryon-production measurements were essential for the measurement of the c production cross section performed by ALICE at midrapidity in pp collisions and also presented in this contribution.
Furthermore, the new preliminary measurement of the / ratio in in p--Pb collisions will be discussed. The measurement of charm baryons in proton--nucleus collisions provides important information about Cold Nuclear Matter (CNM) effects. It also helps to understand how the possible presence of collective effects could modify the production of heavy-flavour hadrons and to interpret the similarities observed among pp, proton--nucleus and nucleus--nucleus systems
Persistence of Rademacher-type and Sobolev-to-Lipschitz properties
We consider the Rademacher-and Sobolev-to-Lipschitztype properties for arbitrary quasi-regular strongly local Dirichlet spaces. We discuss the persistence of these properties under localization, globalization, transfer to weighted spaces, tensorization, and direct integration. As byproducts, we obtain: necessary and sufficient conditions to identify a quasi-regular strongly local Dirichlet form on an extended metric topological sigma-finite possibly non-Radon measure space with the Cheeger energy of the space; the tensorization of intrinsic distances; the tensorization of the Varadhan short-time asymptotics. PARP1 allows proper telomere replication through TRF1 poly (ADP-ribosyl)ation and helicase recruitment
: Telomeres are nucleoprotein structures at eukaryotic chromosome termini. Their stability is preserved by a six-protein complex named shelterin. Among these, TRF1 binds telomere duplex and assists DNA replication with mechanisms only partly clarified. Here we found that poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP1) interacts and covalently PARylates TRF1 in S-phase modifying its DNA affinity. Therefore, genetic and pharmacological inhibition of PARP1 impairs the dynamic association of TRF1 and the bromodeoxyuridine incorporation at replicating telomeres. Inhibition of PARP1 also affects the recruitment of WRN and BLM helicases in TRF1 containing complexes during S-phase, triggering replication-dependent DNA-damage and telomere fragility. This work unveils an unprecedented role for PARP1 as a "surveillant" of telomere replication, which orchestrates protein dynamics at proceeding replication fork
The role of intuition in nurses who activate the Rapid Response Team (RRT) in medical-surgical and telemetry units
The process of making decisions in nursing is filled not only with rational, cognitive ways of knowing, but also with non-rational, intuitive ways of knowing that foster holistic care. In professional practice, nurses should not be limited to cognitive rational processes alone. Williams, Newman and Jones (2011) reported, "Nurses viewed the Rapid Response Team (RRT) as a way to call for help when they knew something was wrong, especially when they could not pinpoint the cause" (p. 268). This study and other evidence suggest that additional research is needed to better understand nurses' perspectives of RRTs, how they impact the work environment, and the relevance of RRT composition. Limited understanding exists about nurses' perspectives regarding the use of intuition in activating RRT. The purpose of the proposed qualitative study was to explore the experiences of staff nurses using nursing intuition in the process of activating RRT for patients being cared for in medical-surgical and telemetry units. The primary data for this qualitative study were collected through in-depth, face-to-face interviews ranging from 45 to 60 minutes in duration. The interviews were semi-structured and open-ended to explore the phenomenon of nursing intuition in activating the RRT. Following the requirements of GT methodology (Strauss & Corbin, 1998), the sample of participants recruited for this study was purposive. The participants were purposely selected because of their knowledge of activating the RRT. The sample of N = 32 adult registered nurses currently worked full time with 12 hour shifts in adult medical-surgical, and telemetry units. Open, axial, and selective coding of 295 units of communication elicited from 32 registered nurses working in medical-surgical and telemetry units resulted ultimately in the generation of a theory grounded in data to increase understanding of the role of intuition in nurses who activate the RRT for patients in medical-surgical and telemetry units. According to this theory, nursing intuition cannot be defined in terms of a linear process of reasoning. The theory proposes that nursing intuition is rooted in the recognition of patterns among a complex combination of factual information and subjective inferences collected from the patient. The components of these patterns are classified for the purposes of the theory as objective assessment, visual observation, verbal interaction, and subjective assessment. Having collected and interpreted the assessment data, the decision to activate the RRT is moderated by emotional and physiological reactions, collaboration with others, education, and historical experience. These moderating factors help to enhance a nurse's ability to trust in his or her feelings and inspire confidence to call the RRT, leading to a beneficial patient outcome, as well as the development and acquisition of the nurse's knowledge
Pietro Verri’s Contribution to the Economic Theory of the 18th Century: Commercial Society, Civil Society and Governance of the Economy
'Count Pietro Verri (1728-97) - Schumpeter writes (History, p. 178) - - would have to be included in any list of the greatest economists'. Within the Milanese school, he certainly stands out, alongside with Cesare Beccaria, during one of the most interesting periods from a history of analysis point of view. Luigi Cossa's famous introduction to the study of political economy rates Pietro Verri to be inferior to Beccaria in ingenuity and scientific cultivation, but greatly to be ahead of him as an economist.1 This judgement by Cossa, in particular, seems to echo the relative position of the two men in the history of ideas, particularly after Beccaria's rise to fame with a book - On crimes and punishments - which had in fact been largely inspired by Verri himself and defended by him.2 It is proposed in the present paper to revisit some of the basic tenets of Pietro Verri's political economy, with more in view than dwell on specific intuitions and theorems: namely relate those to Verri's own - quite original - conception of the economy. The scholarly work of Pietro Verri - with a special reference to his Meditazioni sulla economia politica of 1771 - provides the first systematic contribution stemming from the quarters of Lombard enlightenment in the field of political economy, especially so if one considers that Cesare Beccaria's parallel work - namely his Elementi di economia pubblica, conceived and drafted at the same time as Verri's Meditazioni - would only be published posthumously several years later. From the vantage point afforded by Verri's political economy, we gain a considerably attractive view of the most significant elements and characteristic concepts of Lombard enlightenment during the latter half of the 18th century; Verri, moreover, as we shall see, builds on a number of them in a new and original way. This paper is aimed at discussing Verri's political economy mainly along two distinct, but related, lines. In the first place the conception of commercial society is considered such as it is treated by the author particularly in his Meditazioni. In this perspective the analysis of such issues as competition and the market or money and taxation occupy a central place. Secondly it will be necessary to emphasise that Verri's approach has little to do either with forms of pure economics on one side - largely yet to be born throughout the 18th century - or, on the other side, with such conceptions of the polis - contrariwise well alive among his own contemporaries - as are founded on a sovereign authority conceived to be situated above the law. What Verri's political economy ultimately amounts to is an economic conception of civil society. The latter has natural strong connections with his own fact-mindedness - emphasised by Schumpeter - as well as with his deep practical involvement in administrative affairs and in the reforming process taking place during the latter half of the 18th century in Milan. In our view, a thorough investigation along the mentioned lines is the precondition for an understanding of the intellectual stature and of the scholarly contribution of Pietro Verri. His main ground is distinctly analytical and only by appreciating his analysis is it possible to shed light on the meaning and intellectual significance also of his practical contributions. Moreover Verri's pronouncements on the criticism of despotic government, the relevance of intermediate powers or bodies and on multiple levels of governance will be examined in a new and original light, showing how close they are to the gist of his analysis.

Usefulness of statins in preventing atrial fibrillation in patients with permanent pacemaker: A systematic review
Patients with permanent pacemakers (PM) are at high risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). Minimal ventricular pacing modalities have been demonstrated to reduce AF in such patients, although they are not suitable for patients with advanced atrioventricular conduction disease. Recent evidences suggest that 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (i.e. statins) may represent a new strategy to prevent AF in patients at risk. In this article, we sought to review data regarding the effectiveness of statin therapy in preventing AF patients with a PM. We reviewed all available studies that assessed the effect of statin therapy on the occurrence of AF in patients with PM, implanted due to sinus node dysfunction or atrioventricular conduction disease. Moreover, a random effect inverse variance-weighted meta-analysis was performed, by entering directly the logarithm of the hazard ratio (HR) of AF provided in the multiple Cox regression analyses from each study. Three studies were identified, including 552 patients, of whom 159 received statins. Follow-up ranged from 1 to 2.77 years. Two studies (one observational and one prospective randomized) included predominantly patients with sinus node dysfunction (70 and 91 of patient population, respectively) and, consistently, showed a beneficial effect of statins on the occurrence of AF. On the other hand, the study including predominantly patients with atrioventricular block (60 of patient population) failed to show a beneficial effect of statins on AF occurrence. The HR for AF occurrence for the cumulative data was found to be 0.43 (95 confidence interval: 0.28-0.67, P < 0.001). Statistical heterogeneity between included studies was not detected (χ2 = 1.68, P = 0.43, I2 = 0), although significant clinical differences were found in terms of study design, patient populations, statins use and dosage and AF-monitoring capabilities. Statins may represent a novel treatment strategy to prevent the occurrence of AF in patients with PM, especially for those who had a PM implanted due to sinus node dysfunction. Basing on our findings, a randomized clinical trial with a proper design to evaluate the utility of statins in preventing AF in these patients is warranted. © The Author 2010
A Looming-Recession Threshold

Changes in Perceived Color with Intermittent Illumination
Using 24 observers with normal color vision, perceived shifts in hue were determined for a yellow-red, green, and blue-green at intermittencies of 5, 10, and 20 cps. The hue shift for yellow-red was consistent with the hue shift exhibited by a deuteranomalous observer while the hue shift for green and blue-green was consistent with that exhibited by a protanomalous observer. </jats:p
Exploring the role of accounting history following the adoption of IFRS in Europe. The case of Italy.
(The mandatory adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), enforced by Regulation (EC) No. 1606/2002, may be particularly upsetting in the European countries with strong traditions of accounting theory and regulation. This paper presents an investigation that stresses the importance of previous accounting solutions which were developed nationally to face the challenge of adopting an exogenously developed set of international accounting standards, such as IFRS, in the current EU setting).Italia, Historia de la contabilidad, Teoría de la contabilidad, Autores, IFRS.
