Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Investigating the effects of topical gotu kola (Centella asiatica) preparations on skin parameters in human models of skin damage : finding the best evidence
Cilj istraživanja: Pronaći najbolje dostupne dokaze o sigurnosti i učinkovitosti primjene gotu kole u poboljšanju parametara kože na ljudskim modelima oštećenja kože i zdrave kože.
Objectives: Finding the best available evidence of efficacy and safety of gotu kola in improving the parame-ters of human skin in models of damaged skin and healthy skin.
Material and methods:. The basis of the research is a search of the literature on the Medline (Pubmed) and Central database using required keywords using Boolean operators. Clinical trials were found and the studies we included in the study were selected according to the input and output criteria. A systematic review was made using PRISMA guidelines.
Results: Seven controlled clinical trials were included in the study. Three of the four studies that measured skin hydration on intact skin got a statistically significant improvement in that parameter over placebo. One study examined skin hydration in a skin damage model and found no significant improvement over placebo. Two out of three studies obtained positive results on undamaged skin for skin firmness and elasticity parameters. Elasticity on healthy skin was measured by two studies and only one of them obtained results of improving the same parameter compared to placebo. One study measured elasticity on a damaged skin and noted an impro-vement over placebo. Collagen density was measured in only one study in a healthy skin model and showed an improvement in the same parameter compared to placebo. The effect of the preparations on skin relief was studied by two studies. Both studies had model of skin damage and recieved statistically significant improve-ments. One of them did not have a placebo but the active substance as a control and there was no significante difference between the test and control preparation. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was measured in two studies, both of them recieved a significant reduction in TEWL compared to placebo. One of them measured TEWL after the tape-stripping procedure, while the other measured TEWL in a model of skin inflammation caused by methylnicotinate. The amount of erythema was measured by two studies, one on a skin damage model and the other on healthy skin. Both studies received a statistically significant reduction in erythema. One of them did not have a placebo but an active substance as a control preparation and no statistically significant difference was obtained between the two preparations. Another study used a test preparation as a pre-treatment for damage. Skin pH was measured by only one study and obtained a statistically significant decrea-se in skin pH after skin exposure to irritant compared to placebo.
Conclusion: Evidence of the effectiveness of gotu kola is limited and inconclusive due to the small number of included subjects, questionable methodological quality of studies and inconsistency of results. Therefore no reliable conlusions can be given on the effects of gotu kola on skin parameters

Levels of LDL cholesterol at admission and their impact on outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome
Akutni koronarni sindrom (AKS) obuhvaća niz kliničkih stanja koja nastaju uslijed naglog prekida opskrbe srčanog mišića krvlju. Unatoč napretku u dijagnostici i liječenju, predviđanje ishoda bolesnika ostaje izazov, a uloga pojedinih čimbenika rizika u tome još uvijek nije u potpunosti razjašnjena.
Potrebna su daljnja istraživanja kako bi se unaprijedili modeli procjene rizika i osigurala preciznija i individualizirana skrb za bolesnike nakon AKS-a.Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) encompasses a range of clinical conditions caused by the sudden interruption of blood supply to the myocardium. Despite advances in diagnostics and treatment, predicting patient outcomes remains a challenge, and the role of certain risk factors is not yet fully understood. This thesis explores the relationship between admission LDL cholesterol levels and clinical outcomes in patients hospitalized with ACS. The findings indicate that patients presenting with lower LDL cholesterol levels more frequently experienced worse outcomes, including higher mortality and a greater incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events. Although LDL cholesterol is traditionally considered a key risk factor, these results point to the so-called “lipid paradox” — a phenomenon in which low LDL levels are not necessarily associated with better prognosis in certain clinical contexts. In fact, low LDL levels during acute illness may reflect poor overall health status, malnutrition, systemic inflammation, or more severe underlying disease, rather than true cardiovascular protection.Patients with lower LDL also tended to have lower HDL cholesterol levels, which may further contribute to unfavorable outcomes, as HDL loses its protective properties in acute inflammatory states. Beyond traditional lipid parameters, this study highlights the importance of recognizing other risk factors. The presence of psychiatric diagnoses was associated with worse outcomes, underscoring the need for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that includes mental health as part of cardiovascular risk assessment. Additionally, the study reflects on emerging biomarkers such as lipoprotein(a), which has gained increasing attention for its potential role in residual cardiovascular risk, especially in patients without evident dyslipidemia. Although Lp(a) levels were not assessed in this study, existing literature suggests it could be one of the missing elements explaining adverse outcomes in patients with unexpectedly low LDL. These findings emphasize that LDL cholesterol levels at admission should not be interpreted in isolation but rather in the context of the patient's overall clinical condition and additional risk factors. Further research is needed to refine risk prediction models and ensure more precise, individualized care for patients following ACS
