Effect of laser temporal intensity skew on enhancing pair production in laser - electron-beam collisions
Recent high-intensity laser experiments (Cole et al 2018 Phys. Rev. X 8 011020; Poder et al 2018 Phys. Rev. X 8 031004) have shown evidence of strong radiation reaction in the quantum regime. Experimental evidence of quantum effects on radiation reaction and electron-positron pair cascades has, however, proven challenging to obtain and crucially depends on maximising the quantum parameter of the electron (defined as the ratio of the electric field it feels in its rest frame to the Schwinger field). The quantum parameter can be suppressed as the electrons lose energy by radiation reaction as they traverse the initial rise in the laser intensity. As a result the shape of the intensity temporal envelope becomes important in enhancing quantum radiation reaction effects and pair cascades. Here we show that a realistic laser pulse with a faster rise time on the leading edge, achieved by skewing the temporal envelope, results in curtailing of pair yields as the peak power is reduced. We find a reduction in pair yields by orders of magnitude in contrast to only small reductions reported previously in large-scale particle-in-cell code simulations (Hojbota et al 2018 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 60 064004). Maximum pairs per electron are found in colliding 1.5 GeV electrons with a laser wakefield produced envelope 7.90 × 10-2 followed by a short 50 fs Gaussian envelope, 1.90 × 10-2, while it is reduced to 8.90 × 10-5, a factor of 100, for an asymmetric envelope

Unexplained macrocytosis
OBJECTIVES: Macrocytosis is a relatively common finding in adult patients undergoing blood cell counting. Approximately 10percent of patients will have unexplained macrocytosis after laboratory evaluation. Data on the approach to patients with unexplained macrocytosis are limited. METHODS: To investigate this topic and help delineate an approach to this condition, the records of 9779 patients diagnosed in our institution between 1995 and 2005 as having macrocytosis were reviewed. Patients with evidence of liver disease, alcohol abuse, hypothyroidism, folate or vitamin B12 deficiency, hemolysis, or use of any drugs known to cause macrocytosis were excluded. RESULTS: Forty-three patients were found to have unexplained macrocytosis. The median follow-up was 4 years. A total of 11.6percent patients developed a primary bone marrow disorder (two B-cell lymphomas, two with myelodysplastic syndrome, one plasma cell disorder), 16.3percent developed worsening cytopenias, 69.7percent had stable disease, and 2.3percent resolved. The median time to first cytopenia was 18 months, and the mean time to diagnosis of bone marrow disorder was 31.6 months. The outcomes were not significantly different when comparing patients with or without anemia upon diagnosis. The probability of a bone marrow biopsy to establish a diagnosis of a primary disorder was 33.3percent in patients with macrocytosis without anemia compared with 75percent in patients with macrocytosis with anemia. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with unexplained macrocytosis still require close follow-up. We suggest a strategy of follow-up with blood cell counting every 6 months. The spectrum is compared to emission observed following the photolysis of gas phase , and the tentative assignment of the gas phase emission to NFCl is The lifetime of the NFCl emission in the matrix is ns. A mechanism involving the ability of different vibrational modes of predissociated electronic states to couple in the low temperature matrix environment is discussed, and used to explain the difference in lifetimes observed for the gas phase and the matrix emission
Polymer microparticle arrays from electrodynamically focused microdroplet streams
We describe instrumentation for forming two-dimensional arrays of polymer microparticles produced from electrodynamically focused microdroplet streams. A single-stage linear quadrupole was used to focus droplets/particles onto silanated glass slides mounted on a computer-driven two-dimensional translation stage. Center-to-center position stability was on the order of 1 mu m. Applications to molecular sorting with polymer particles as host carriers are discussed. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Unmet care needs of patients with advanced cancer and their relatives: multicentre observational study
Objectives: The care needs of patients with advanced cancer and their relatives change throughout the disease trajectory. This study focused on the care-related problems and needs of patients with advanced cancer and their relatives. This was done from the perspective of centres for information and support. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the eQuiPe study: an observational cohort study in which 40 Dutch hospitals participated. All adult patients with a diagnosis of a metastasised tumour and their relatives were eligible. Measures included information on the patients' and relatives' care problems and needs, assessed by the short version of the Problems and Needs in Palliative Care questionnaire. Socioeconomic demographics were also collected. Results: 1103 patients with advanced cancer and 831 relatives were included. Both patients (M=60.3, SD=29.0) and relatives (M=59.2, SD=26.6) experienced most problems in the domain of â € psychological issues'. Both patients (M=14.0, SD=24.2) and relatives (M=17.7, SD=25.7) most frequently reported unmet needs within this domain. The most often reported unmet need by patients was â € worrying about the future of my loved ones' (22.0%); for relatives this was â € fear for physical suffering of the patient' (32.8%). There was no clear relationship between socioeconomic demographics and the experienced unmet needs. Conclusions: The most often mentioned unmet needs consisted of fears and worries, followed by a broad range of topics within multiple domains. Centres for information and support may play a role in reducing the unmet needs of (potential) visitors as these centres provide support on a broad range of topics.Methodologie en Organisatie van Desig
Infrared Spectrum of NFCl Radicals in Low Temperature Argon Matrices

Peaks at 920 and which could not be assigned to , or to other known species (eg., NF, NCl, , , CLF, ), appeared in the FTIR spectrum of the matrix. In previous radicals had been produced in this manner from , and the assumption was made in these studies that the 920 and peaks were from NFCl. Normal mode calculations, carried out in a reiterative fashion, support this assignment
