Cumulative and combinatorial knowledge dynamics: Their role for continuity and change in regional path development

    No full text
This thesis addresses the question of how regions can adapt to technological and social changes. In the face of recent economic rises, disruptive digitalization, and the need to transition towards sustainability, processes of diversification, transformation, and renewal have become increasingly important to strengthen the dynamics development of regions. While the creation or the lock-in of regional development paths has received a lot of attention by economic geographers, studies on the transformation of existing paths are relatively scarce. Instead, in recent decades scientific, political, and economic actors alike have promoted a logic of specialization to support regional competitiveness. Yet the processes outlined above require that these specializations are combined with novel, external knowledge inputs. In order to capture these processes of the accumulation and combination of knowledge, this thesis introduces and applies the concept of knowledge dynamics. It differentiates interaction processes by the degree of institutional and cognitive distance that actors have to bridge. In the theoretical framework of this thesis, these knowledge dynamics are brought together with path development research of the Evolutionary Economic Geography and Innovation Systems literature strands. At the center of this thesis stand the questions of how different knowledge dynamics influence, and are influenced by, the elements and institutions of regional economic landscapes. In four papers based on empirical material from different contexts, these interfaces are explored. Thereby the focus is laid on knowledge dynamics in symbolic knowledge bases of music scenes, as the field of non-technological innovation is relatively underexplored despite its increasing economic significance. In order to quantitatively measure innovation and knowledge dynamics in this creative industry, this thesis employs so-called resonance indicators derived from digital social data. The findings of this thesis show that the interplay of cumulative and combinatorial knowledge dynamics leads to processes of path modernization and branching. While cumulative knowledge dynamics guide the direction of potential diversification routes, combinatorial knowledge dynamics affect the creation and transformation of new organizations and institutions. In order to promote these dynamics, path plasticity and the openness to extralocal knowledge sources should be promoted

The dissertation at hand analyses knowledge dynamics in innovation proc-esses from a methodological and spatial perspective. By applying a micro-level and process-based view, it contributes to recent research about knowl-edge creation in innovation. This is implemented with the novel research approach of Innovation Biographies that enables to empirically study the time-spatial unfolding of knowledge in innovation processes. The thesis follows three aims: To analyse the nature of knowledge dynamics in innovation processes from idea to implementation according to content, actor constellations and the related micro-geography. To explicate the research approach of Innovation Biographies and to embed it into the wider methodological array of economic geography, by assessing the value-added of its results in relation to other empirical ap-proaches that analyse knowledge generation and social interaction in in-novation. To study sectoral innovation specifics within tourism and construction by analysing the mutual influence of knowledge dynamics and the geo-graphical and social context in concrete innovation processes, and by in-terpreting findings in light of the sectors’ particular distinctions. The essential finding contributing to the first aim is that knowledge combinations from different sectors and scales have had decisive influence on the analysed innovation processes. High-tech knowledge was combined with low-tech knowledge; production structures of the automotive industry influenced those of prefabricated houses, football clubs of the German Bundes league cooperated with tourism actors, etc. The geography of knowledge dynamics revealed a multi-scalar scope, even if impact of different scales varied according to sectoral and socio-spatial contexts in which innovation emerged and gained momentum. Furthermore, in contrast to mainstream assumptions, the actor networks of the innovations were only to a limited extent based on previously existing trustful relations. Networks have rather been constituted by a mixture of actors known and unknown to the innovating organisation in order to account for the arising novelty. Referring to the second aim, findings revealed that the micro-level approach of Innovation Biographies provides substantially enriched insight into knowledge creation, its dynamics and time-spatial patterns of innovation. Thus, Innovation Biographies offer a relevant and complementary perspec-tive as compared to other research approaches in economic geography. Through a specific combination of interviewing techniques, network analy-ses, and visualisations, it is possible to reconstruct the generation of knowl-edge in innovation creation from idea to implementation. However, draw-backs, e.g. concerning the fuzziness of the precise beginning and end of an innovation process and strong reliance on cooperation of interview partners remain. As to the third aim, knowledge dynamics and innovation behaviour in tour-ism and construction are heavily influenced by spatial distinctions of the sectors’ production structures. In tourism, the density of competitors causes massive competition and frequent imitation of innovation. Two types of in-novation strategies counteracting competition have been elaborated. The first is labelled “assimilation”, the second “distinction”. In the former strat-egy, proximate actors are involved in knowledge generation. By incorporat-ing actors that otherwise could be potential competitors, a lever is installed that prevents imitation. Within the latter strategy, competitive advantage is achieved through the incorporation of knowledge from actors located in other countries. Utilising internationally sourced, for others not easily acces-sible knowledge, allows innovators to develop unique services that cannot be immediately imitated by others. The construction sector is characterised through strongly localised, tempo-rary, project-based structures that result in renewed knowledge generation in every new building project and therewith in costly repetitive actions. Cur-rent innovation strategies, therefore, strive to overcome spatial constraints and project-based structures, e.g. through prefabrication or service-orientation. These innovation strategies are crucially shaped by knowledge combinations.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Geographies of Sustainability Transitions - Embedding Sustainability into Regional Economic Development Strategies: Actors, Dynamics, and Pathways

This dissertation examines the role of institutional and social dynamics for the development of regions towards sustainability. Against the background of economic, ecological, and social crises, the integration, development, and dissemination of sustainable economic development strategies are becoming more and more relevant. While the line of transition research focuses on socio-technical regimes and their development towards sustainability, spatialities of these dynamics has been integrated into scientific research in recent years by the Geographies of Sustainability Transitions. The interdependencies between regional institutional systems and the practices of the actors involved can lead to gradual short-term changes and to larger institutional changes in the long term. However, the interplay and mechanisms of gradual changes and long-term transitions are largely unexplored. To seize the socio-spatial dynamics of sustainable strategies (policies), this thesis uses the concept of Policy Mobilities. The processes analyzed in this line of research comprise dynamics determining the invention, mobilization, transfer, and localization of policies. Policies are important components for the institutional and practical development of an organization or region, as they provide guidelines for dealing with specific problems. In the theoretical framework of this thesis, the concept of Policy Mobilities is brought together with the evolutionary approach of Knowledge Dynamics to explain the constructive interdependencies between global knowledge flows and regional policy innovation processes. The dissertation focuses the question of how the interdependencies of (policy) knowledge, regional institutions, and practices influence Regional Transition Paths to Sustainability. Hence, three scientific articles examine these dynamics with an emphasis on the role of consultants as mediators and initiators for sustainable action and thinking. This actor-centered approach necessitated ethnographic and practice-based methods (Action Research) and draws on individual cases in the empirical examples presented. The results show that all three theoretical approaches used in this thesis, individually and in combination, can make useful contributions to research the Geographies of Sustainability Transitions

    Sustainability Standards - a knowledge-based, transnational perspective

This thesis addresses the question how private standards can promote sustainable development processes within Global Value Chains (GVC) and Global Production Networks (GPN). Voluntary standards have gained in importance in addressing social and environmental concerns in the global economy. By translating the abstract concept of “sustainability” into formulated rules and organisational practices that can be implemented at the firm level, standards have the potential to drive organisational change and enforce sustainable management practices (Barrientos & Smith, 2007; Nadvi, 2008). However, most sustainability standards are still developed in the Global North and the influence of actors from the Global South in standard setting processes remains limited (Fransen, 2012; Ponte & Cheyns, 2013). Empirical research revealed that when standards are not embedded into local institutional contexts, their legitimization and implementation is often hindered (Dannenberg, 2008; Nadvi, 2008), and many violations of private standards have been observed (Ponte, 2012; Bair, 2017). In tourism, additional challenges for standard setting result from the integration of customers within this service industry. As it is difficult to standardize social interaction processes, most sustainability standards in tourism focus on the environmental dimension of sustainability (Font & Harris, 2004). How to develop sustainability standards with a focus on the social dimension of sustainability that adequately address local and global concerns and promote sustainable development processes in the global economy is currently underexplored. With the aim to address this research gap, the thesis applied a novel approach. Conceptually, micro level approaches from innovation studies and organisation theory were integrated into the research on GVCs and GPNs to enhance the current understanding on how the development path of a standard influences its intra- and inter-organisational impacts and implementation within GVCs/GPNs. Empirically, the focus was put on South African tourism and the case of the sustainability standard “Fair Trade in Tourism”. This case was chosen due to a number of reasons: Firstly, it focuses on the social dimension of sustainability with the large majority of its criteria being social criteria (Spenceley & Seif, 2007). Secondly, as opposed to most other sustainability standards the FTT standard has been developed by actors from the Global South (Mahony, 2007). Thirdly, the FTT standard has a high reputation in the global tourism industry. Methodologically, a longitudinal case study approach with a mixed-methods design was employed to analyse the time-spatial development path of the “Fair Trade in Tourism” standard. The findings of the thesis underline the multi-scalar nature and the important role of combinatorial knowledge dynamics within the evolutionary development paths of sustainability standards. The creation of innovative, context-adapted sustainability standards requires the collaboration of various public and private actors from different institutional contexts and spatial scales. Knowledge combination within these processes is a complex issue, and many barriers have to be overcome. Bridging not only geographical but also relational distances (Boschma, 2005) and the integration of symbolic knowledge bases (Asheim, 2007) was essential to develop context-relevant standards that can be embedded into multi-layered place-specific institutional environments, and concomitantly address global concerns for sustainable development processes within GVCs/GPNs. The findings further illuminated the important role of a special type of organisation, knowledge-intensive intermediaries, in mediating between the interests of various actors across borders and scales. These actors contributed to gradual transformative institutional change within place-specific institutional environments and were able to bring in Southern actors’ demands into transnational and global standard setting processes

Mikro-Dynamiken und institutioneller Wandel in Regionalen Transitionspfaden zur Nachhaltigkeit

Major ecological and social challenges require fundamental societal changes towards more sustainable production and consumption patterns. An important basis for such "sustainability transitions" are changes in institutional structures (e.g., laws, values and interpretive schemes) that promote sustainable social practices. Currently, little is known about how such institutional changes are triggered and how they evolve. In particular, it is poorly understood how the activities of actors on the micro-level affect the development of institutional structures in the long run and why such processes vary between regions. This thesis analyzes institutional dynamics in sustainability transitions from a regional perspective in order to gain a better understanding of the place-specificity of these processes. Based on the premise that regional sustainability transitions differ from sectoral transition processes, which have hitherto been in the focus of transition research, the dissertation follows three aims: (1) to develop a conceptual framework that captures the particularities of institutional change in regional sustainability transitions; (2) to develop a methodological approach that enables to analyze the complex institutional dynamics underlying regional sustainability transitions; (3) to generate empirical insights into regional sustainability transitions and the actors that drive them on the micro-level. The newly developed conceptual framework of “Regional Transition Paths to Sustainability (RTPS)” builds on insights from Sustainability Transitions literature, Neo-institutional Theory and Evolutionary Economic Geography (EEG). Compared to existing approaches that serve to investigate sustainability transitions (in particular the multi-level perspective; MLP), the RTPS approach considers the particularities that shape sustainability transitions at the regional level, such as their gradual and regime-overarching nature, the spatial proximity of actors, regional path dependencies, and the embeddedness of regions in multi-scalar governance networks. The framework focuses on new organizational forms as enablers of both, change and stability, in regional transition paths to sustainability. In doing so, the framework is sensitive to gradual changes in regional institutional structures and their underlying micro-dynamics. Based on this theoretical basis, the methodological approach of a “transition topology” is developed. The topology makes it possible to visualize and reconstruct institutional and organizational changes in their specific time-space context. The approach also makes apparent how institutional change is connected to organizational change at the regional level. In this way, it can be depicted how processes at the micro-level induce gradual changes in the regional path that lead to a more fundamental change at the macro-level over time. The topology allows for systematic comparisons between sustainability transitions in different regions. The conceptual and methodological approaches are applied in three empirical studies: a) an in-depth study of the micro-dynamics of regional sustainability transition in Augsburg (Germany), b) a comparison of the involvement of universities in regional sustainability transitions in Augsburg and Linz (Austria), and c) an investigation into the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in regional sustainability transitions in Upper Austria. These studies are complemented by an analysis (based on a mixed-methods research design) of the motives of researchers for choosing a sustainability-related research topic. | iv All the studies shed light on the processes and dynamics that lead to the diversity of transition pathways across space (e.g., regarding their different pace, their thematic breath), which remained largely “hidden” in previous research on sustainability transitions. They highlight the role of valuedriven actors in regional sustainability transitions, who are often involved in several thematic fields at the same time and who are thus able to realize synergies. In particular, the relevance of new organizational forms for institutional change in regional sustainability transitions becomes apparent. While temporary organizational forms foster the development of sustainable social practices, more permanent organizations are important to stabilize these newly developed practices. The thesis makes an original contribution to the Geography of Sustainability Transitions on a conceptual, methodological and empirical level. It enables a better understanding of institutional dynamics in regional sustainability transitions and therefore generates a basis for promoting such processes in practice.

    No full text
Since Micro-tanneries’ (McT) appearance in 1948 in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), it has adapted to changes and continued its businesses. McTs displayed remarkable growth in the late 1990s and supported the booming Bangladesh leather industry, facilitating the export of diversified products to the world market and contributing to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Thus, understanding the causes of its resilience is not only important from the academic perspective but also crucial from stakeholders’ point of view as it is currently undergoing a rapid transformation. In Bangladesh, 206 tanneries are currently operating of which 187 were located in Hazaribagh, Dhaka during the research period. Ever since its inception, McTs have faced numerous challenges regarding adhering to standards (both local and global), changes in the supply chain, government pressure to relocate from Hazaribagh to Savar, and growing environmental as well as workers health protection activities. National and international media and NGOs widely focused on the negative impacts of McTs to the extent that their contribution to the national GDP as well as to local socio-political sectors was understudied. At the center of this thesis stand two aims: 1) to identify the major factors influencing the resilience of McTs and 2) to explore how indigenous knowledge (i.e. informal skills and understanding developed by workers and owners with long experience of interaction with their local surroundings) is mobilized to adapt to highly dynamic environments and changes. This qualitative research is based on semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The fieldwork was carried out in a crucial period at the beginning of 2017 when McTs were faced with another great challenge in having to relocate. The primary motivation of this research comes from the intention to explore the core reasons for these McTs’ sustainability and subsequent growth (i.e. resilience) despite numerous obstacles. Two historical periods (1990–1995 and 2010–2017) are taken into consideration to evaluate the aspects described above since the McTs faced significant changes that directly impacted their survival. Consequently, this research examines the resilience of the McTs with particular reference to two major theoretical approaches, such as the socio-ecological system perspective and the organizational change management in the continuing of their business operations. The major empirical findings are: 1) In Bangladesh’s context, categorizing McTs into micro and macro is problematic based on the available EU criteria. 2) The interplay of several internal and external factors within the socio-ecological system contribute to achieving resilience. 3) McTs manage indigenous knowledge creatively and employ such knowledge in effectively managing their day-to-day operations. 4) ‘Family dynamics’ (understood as the patterns of relating or interactions between family members towards achieving a common business goal) are an important consideration that impact the resilience of McTs. 5) McTs do not receive institutional support either from the government or from NGOs for waste management, as would be expected. 6) In the above-mentioned two historical periods, when they faced major challenges, McTs showed remarkable resilience in continuing their operations by remaining flexible, adaptive, and competitive. 7) The employers largely ignored the need for professional training (as the employees mostly learnt by doing) and health risk matters of their workforce, even though their day-to-day work allows the leather industry to earn millions each year. This research demonstrates that among McTs, while a number of them could not succeed and went out of business, many of them were added as new entrepreneurs in this sector. They are the silent profit generators, employers, entrepreneurs, charitable agencies, and social activists who are often forgotten and are seldom quoted in development reports, both locally and globally.
