    Get PDF
Marek Thee was a Jewish Polish journalist, scholar, and activist. This book tells his life from narrowly escaping death in the Holocaust to exile in Palestine, where he became attached to the Polish consular service. On his return to Poland in 1950, he worked for the Foreign Ministry and later for the Polish Institute for International Affairs. He served as Head of the Polish delegation to the International Control Commission in Indochina in the late 1950s. In 1968 he lost his job and his Polish citizenship in a nationalistic and antisemitic campaign. He was able to move to Norway where he worked for twenty years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), editing an international quarterly journal, Bulletin of Peace Proposals and doing research on the arms race. In retirement, he continued his research and writing at the Norwegian Human Rights Institute. The book vividly relates the drama of his life in Poland, Palestine, Indochina, and Norway. Reintroducing Intergenerational Equilibrium: Key Concepts behind the New Polish Pension System

    Get PDF
Poland adopted a new pension system in 1999. This new pension system allows Poland to reduce pension expenditure (as a percent of GDP), instead of increasing it – as is projected for the majority of other OECD countries. This paper presents the conceptual background of the new system design. The new system’s long-term objective is to ensure intergenerational equilibrium irrespective of the demographic situation. This requires stabilisation of the share of GDP allocated to the entire retired generation. Traditional pension systems aim, instead, at stabilisation of the share of GDP per retiree. The change in demographic structure observed over the past for a couple of decades and this historic attempt to stabilise the share of GDP per retiree led to severe fiscal problems and negative externalities for growth, as observed in numerous countries. Many countries have tried to reform their pension systems in different ways to try to resolve the issue of these ever-increasing costs. Although the Polish reform uses a number of techniques applied elsewhere, its design differs from the typical approaches – and the lessons and results are promising for all OECD countries. This paper presents the theoretical and practical application of this alternative approach and as such, the key features of the new Polish pension system design.pensions, equilibrium, GDP, pension debt servicing, income allocation, generations

Tworki of Marek Bieńczyk as a genre story

    Get PDF
The article’s author analyses Marek Bieńczyk’s novel Tworki (1999), using tools from genre theory and challenging the prevailing view of Bieńczyk as a postmodernist, the pantextualism of his literature, and his adherence to “non-epic prose.” Bieńczyk’s novel is contextualized as a drawnout story (gawęda), mystery story, bildundsroman. It is shown how Bieńczyk uses established genres to assemble the elements of a narrative universe (the narrator, protagonist, intrigue), and the way he handles the epic aspects of his literature. Particular emphasis is placed on an analysis of the vaudeville-cabaret layers of the novel, everything borrowed from popular culture and used to re-narrate the trauma of the Holocaust. In this respect, Bieńczyk’s novel is considered to be one of the bravest works in Polish post-1989 literature

Opening sentences in Marek Krajewski’s novels

Opening sentences raise a lot of interest of both linguists and common Polish speakers. It is evident from numerous websites in which Internet users share their observations on the best opening sentences of books (most often novels), as well as theoretical papers and writing guides. The analysis of opening sentences of ten novels by Marek Krajewski (co-author of two of them being Mariusz Czubaj) is to provide an answer to the question to what extent the utterance opening of the texts of the Wroc³aw-based prose writer fulfill the requirements to be met by such type of constructions. It turns out that most crucial are syntactic and semantic features rather than lexical ones. The clash between theoretical assumptions and the M. Krajewski’s writing practice shows that opening sentences of his novels not always fall into classical determinants of incipient formulas. It also illustrates the thesis that a skillful writer does not need to cling to theoretical assumptions to create good opening sentences and novels translated into nearly twenty languages

Protagonist and setting in the short story “The Greater Punishment” by Marek S. Huberath

The article presents an interpretation of one of Marek S. Huberath’s first published short stories, which is also one of his first “eschatological” fictions (texts set in the after-world). The article analyses how the protagonist, who finds himself in a combination of hell and purgatory, wastes his chance to mend his ways and stays within a potentially endless cycle of sin and punishment. The spatial setting of the story becomes a metaphorical reflection first of the character’s opportunity and then of its loss. The story thus seems to suggest the idea that an inveterate sinner suffers a potentially endless punishment because, in spite of retaining free will, he keeps making the same wrong choices. The article presents an interpretation of one of Marek S. Huberatha, stanowiącego zarazem jedną z jego pierwszych „fikcji eschatologicznych” (tekstów osadzonych w zaświatach). Artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób główny bohater, który trafia do miejsca łączącego w sobie piekło i czyściec, marnuje szansę, aby naprawić swoje postępowanie i nadal tkwi w potencjalnie nieskończonym cyklu grzechu i kary. Tło przestrzenne opowiadania staje się metaforycznym odzwierciedleniem najpierw szansy stojącej przed bohaterem, a potem jej utraty. W ten sposób opowiadanie zdaje się wskazywać, iż niepoprawny grzesznik ponosi potencjalnie nieskończoną karę pomimo zachowania wolnej woli, ponieważ wciąż dokonuje tych samych błędnych wyborów.The article presents an interpretation of one of Marek S. The title of Marek Troszyński’s book Słowacki. Poza kanonem is excellent from the perspective of marketing, but at the same time, it succeeds in conveying thecontent of the 11 chapters of different length, supplemented with 8 interesting appendices and 65 aptly selected and described illustrations. In a way, it has a character of sylwa; its previous versions (published in refereed magazines and collective monographs) became considerably re‑edited in order to achieve the result in the form of monography. I accept the opening form of this dissertation, which is proposed by the author, as well as his affirmative attitude to the poet’s quasi‑literary achievements, which makes the author “a friendly witness” of Słowacki’s biography and writing. The work is undoubtedly original, own, exceptional and quite unique. I do not expect that in the foreseeable future we will encounter any gifted follower of the method, inquisitiveness, a highly interesting narration, and at the same time a lucky discoverer of so many philological findings, offering such a great number of the conjectures of the poems, not necessarily canonical ones, however, coming after the “canonical”, because critical, edition of Juliusz Kleiner. The title of Marek Troszyński’s book Słowacki.
