The study of clay-built bloomery furnace shafts in Sweden-Ceramological analyses of an important part of iron production through 1500 years
The study of the clay-built shafts for bloomery furnaces in Sweden from the Iron Age through to the Medieval period and even later in parts of the country has been evolving over the last 25 years in a tight collaboration between ceramologists (from Lund University at first (KFL) and later company SKEA) and archaeometallurgists at the company “The Archaeologists” in Uppsala (formerly the Geoarchaeological Lab, GAL). This article (financed by the database-project VISEAD) presents an overview of the results from a geographical and chronological perspective with an outlook to European research. It claims the existence of craft traditions primarily in raw material choices and treatment as well as in the curation of the shafts as an indispensable part of the iron production strategy. There is no clearly visible chronological development but some regional differences although the broader traditions are spread over larger areas. Major traditions concern furnace shafts with a wickerwork frame or with a stone frame and one tradition that only used naturally coarse clays while another added organic temper – all four with different geographical spread. Besides these major traditions deviant technical solutions have been observed involving fx. temper of crushed rock, hair or iron ore. Much of the variation seems to come down to differences in the skill and experience in the builders of the shaft. A study of the representativity of the Swedish ceramics analyses published in The Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD) [Elektronisk resurs]
This article is taking a critical view on the representativity of Swedish archaeometrical analyses of ceramics affected by the varying conditions under which this work has been undertaken during almost 50 years. The scrutiny has been done as part of the project VISEAD in order to prepare the ceramics data being made available in the Strategic Environmental Archaeology Database (SEAD). The result shows that the analytical coverage varies significantly from good to poor in different parts of Sweden and the possible reasons are discussed. Furthermore, this review has made it clear that a detailed, complete overview of the archaeological sites is quite difficult to establish for some parts of Sweden. Thus, the information stored in the open database SEAD will not only serve to make so far disparate archaeometric data accessible but will also help to complement the Swedish heritage overview.</p
For everyday use and special occasions : a multi-analytical study of pottery from two early neolithic funnel beaker (TRB) sites on the island of Öland, SE Sweden
This paper presents results of technical, functional and stylistic analyses on pottery from two Early Neolithic sites on Öland – Resmo and Runsbäck. Analyses include thin sections and XRF of clays and wares, lipid residue analysis and recording of stylistic attributes. The two sites are situated 15 km apart on the west side of the island. C14 dates place the activities at the sites at c. 3900 3600 BC and 3600–3100 BC respectively. While overall similarities are obvious, some structured differences are noted in the design as well as in the wares whereas vessel use patterns are strikingly similar between the two assemblages. In general, the Resmo assemblage is characterised by great homogeneity while the Runsbäck pottery displays more variation. It is suggested that the observed differences reflect differences in function and duration between the analysed sites
Analyses of crucibles from southern and western Sweden using handheld XRF
In this article some initial results from the projects "Bronsildems deglar" (en. "Bronze Age melting crucibles") and "Deglarna frin Bokenäs" (en. "The crucibles from Bokenäs") are presented. The aim of the projects is to expand our knowledge of the production, use and discard of technical ceramics in south Sweden using laboratory analysis. This article describes the results and conclusions made by analysing two materials (Löderup and Bokenäs) with the help of a handheld XRF. In the material from Löderup (a grave dated to the late Bronze Age - early Iron Age) the elements that are detected within the clay used for household pottery are in one case similar to those in the clay used for crucibles and clay moulds for melting/casting metal and in another case dissimilar. The clays used for the mould and crucible seem to be more or less the same according to the analysis. The Bokenäs material (consisting of 6 crucible sherds) is according to the results from the XRF analysis made of the same clay. Even though the two find materials are separated geographically, chronologically and quantitatively they have one common feature: high amounts of Ca in the crucibles. The occurence of this element shows a connection with the presence of the traces of Cu-alloy found on the crucible sherds. The first conclusion that is made in this study is that the XRF-results so far show us that choice of clay for technical ceramics may, or may not be the same as the raw material for household pottery. In this case it varies even within the same context. The second is that the Ca value clearly seems to have a connection with the presence of Cu-alloy traces

Shards of Iron Age Communications. A ceramological study of internal structures and external contacts in the Gudme-Lundeborg Area, Funen during the Late Roman Iron Age
The objective of ceramology is to describe pottery craft traditions; the potters, their production, social organisation and the use of the products. Through this the human actions surrounding the pottery are studied. The objective of the research presented in this thesis is to study patterns of contacts between different, contemporary sites within a limited area through a ceramological analysis of pottery from the said sites. As material for this study the pottery from the Iron Age sites in the Gudme-Lundeborg area on Funen, Denmark proved eminently suitable. The collection of sites, including both settlements and cemeteries within a 10 km radius, were investigated in connection with the Gudme-Lundeborg project. It was initiated in 1982 and the final publications of the results are presently beginning to appear. The chronological scope of the project stretches from the late Pre Roman Iron Age to the Viking Age. The present study of pottery is, however, limited to the period of Late Roman Iron Age (200-400 AD), where all the main sites were in use. The main sites are the settlements of Gudme and Brudager, the large urn grave cemetery of Møllegårdsmarken and the trading site at Lundeborg. The research questions pertinent to the pottery from these sites were : Did residents of the designated centre Gudme bring pottery with them to the trading site and/or did they make pottery there ?; secondly, can the use of Møllegårdsmarken as a burial ground for the same residents be proven by comparing the grave pottery with the settlement pottery? Thirdly, may ceramic evidence be found of contacts between the other sites. The study of the pottery is based on a thorough registration and statistical documentation of the sherd materials. A representative sample was taken for further laboratory analyses. This sample of sherds and samples of clay from the area were submitted to petrographic microscopy on thin sections and to thermal analyses. Together they provide information on most aspects of the craft behind the pottery. In addition the grain size distribution and the clay mineral composition of the clay samples were analysed. XRD-analyses were performed by Fil.Dr. S. Olsson. Diatom analyses on some of the sherds were performed by Dr. hc. H. Håkansson. The results showed that people from Brudager used clay from the vicinity of the trading site Lundeborg for a major part of their pottery production. Probably they were also making pottery on the trading site, possibly for barter. It could also be shown, that in LRIA I they used the large cemetery Møllegårdsmarken as well as their own local cemetery for burying their dead. In the case of the relation between Gudme and the other sites ( incl. Møllegårdsmarken and Lundeborg ) there were no clear ceramic indications of contact except for one ware group datable to the later part of Late Roman Iron Age. Thus the ceramological analysis contributed to the description of a complex Iron Age society where Gudme did not have a prominent position seen from a pottery perspective
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
