Aangezien de eerste cijfers stilaan uit het gegevensbestand tevoorschijn rollen, vonden wij de tijd rijp voor een volgende stand van zaken. Een aantal gegevens werd al voorgesteld op een eerste gebruikersgroep rond het datawarehouse. U vindt het verslag in dit artikel. We geven een schets van werkzaamheidsgraden op wijkniveau, en een eerste aftasten van de groep personen die meerdere jobs combineren, de zogenaamde multi-jobbers.status: Publishe

    Healthy lifestyles to prevent dementia and reduce dementia symptoms

    Purpose Dementia is a growing problem worldwide, due to an ageing population. It has significant human and economic costs. There is no effective medical treatment. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Using earlier reviews, the author discussed the difference between dementia and cognitive ageing and the different types of dementia, in terms of manifestation and pathology. The author reviewed non-modifiable risk factors for dementia, such as age, gender, genetics and education. Education can possibly have lifelong protective effects, as it may promote cognitive reserve. This paper focussed on lifestyle interventions to further increase brain reserve capacity. Findings from earlier reviews were summarised to provide guidelines for policymakers and practioners. Findings The reviews suggested that most nutritional approaches may have limited effectiveness, and should be implemented in midlife, before dementia symptoms are present and probably only in people who are actually nutritionally deficient. The author found a reasonable positive evidence base of engagement in cognitive and physical activities to prevent dementia, which may also help reduce symptoms of dementia. Practical implications From the studies reviewed, it was suggested that keeping physically and mentally active may help in all stages of life to prevent, but also reduce dementia symptoms. A focus on nutrition and treating heart disease risk factors is possibly limited to midlife, or before dementia symptoms are present. Originality/value The author used an evidence based approach to review which lifestyle interventions could help prevent dementia or reduce dementia symptoms. The main outcome of this paper was that stage of life and ability (dementia present or not) may interact with success of the intervention. </jats:sec

    Robotic sequential ultrasonic welding of thermoplastic composites: Process development and testing

    Multi-spot sequential ultrasonic welding is a promising joining technique for fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites structures (TPC). In existing research on the multi-spot sequential ultrasonic welding process, welds are produced through the use of a static table-top welding machine, at a coupon level. However, in order to apply this joining technology to large structures, the welding process needs to be up-scaled through the use of a robotic platform.At the Smart Advanced Manufacturing (SAM|XL) automation field lab and TU Delft Aerospace Engineering, a robotic sequential ultrasonic welding system has been developed. The system consists of a welding end-effector (EEF) equipped with various sensors that enable online process monitoring and control, which can be mounted on an industrial robot arm to perform sequential multi-spot welds. The goal of this study was to assess the welding performance of the ultrasonic welding EEF, which was mounted on an industrial KUKA KR210 R2700 Extra 10-axis robot arm, by comparing it to the performance of welds produced through the static table-top machine.In this study, single and multi-spot welds were produced on thermoplastic composite coupons, based on welding conditions which were defined in a preliminary study. The robot and EEF deflections observed during the welding process were analysed to assess the deviation of the robotic process from the static one. The feedback obtained from the welding equipment in terms of consumed power and tool displacement in both processes was also compared. The weld quality was assessed though single lap shear testing of the welded joints as well as fractography of the failure surface. The results of this study indicate that the developed robotic welding process is quite robust and is capable of producing high-quality sequential welded joints despite significant system deflections observed during the welding process. Slightly lower welded area and weld strength was obtained which can be attributed to the system deflections. Finally, the results indicate that the use of a stiffer robotic platform as well as a stiffer EEF construction will result in better system rigidity and weld spot positioning accuracy, and through this the welding process shows promise for large-scale industrial applications.Aerospace Manufacturing TechnologiesAerospace Structures & Computational Mechanic

    Coupling approximation levels for modeling ice flow on paleo time scales

    Ice flow, forced by gravity is governed by the Full Stokes (FS) equations, which are computationally intensive to solve due to their non-linearity. Therefore, it has been unavoidable to approximate the FS equations when modeling growth and collapse of an ice sheet-shelf system, which requires simulating many thousands of years. However, the most popular Shallow Ice Approximation (SIA) and Shallow Shelf Approximation (SSA) are only accurate in certain parts of an ice sheet, both excluding the grounding line where the ice starts floating. Using the Finite Element software Elmer/Ice, SIA and SSA are dynamically coupled to FS aiming to maintain high precision and reduce computation time. An existing coupling of SIA and FS, called ISCAL [Ahlkrona et al., 2013a], is investigated for robustness. It is shown that instabilities in the FS solution limit ISCAL’s robustness. A novel way of iteratively coupling SSA and FS has been implemented into the open source Finite Element software Elmer/Ice and applied to both 2D and 3D conceptual marine ice sheets. The SSA-FS coupling shows to be very accurate, for both diagnostic and prognostic runs (error in velocity respectively below 0.5% and 5%). Grounding line dynamics of the SSA-FS coupling are similar to the FS model under a periodical forcing in a simulation covering 3000 years. The current implementation does not yield speed up in 2D due to inefficient assembly of the matrices to be solved. In 3D, the cpu time is reduced to two thirds of the cpu time of the FS model despite inefficient assembly. The total number of FS iterations in the SSA-FS coupling is comparable to the FS model, showing a large potential of reducing computation time since computation time of the SSA model is up to 3% of the FS model’s computation time when applied to the same ice shelf ramp. In future research, the SSA-FS coupling can be combined with ISCAL, but this requires both efficient implementation of the SSA-FS coupling and improved stabilization methods for FS.Applied Mathematic
