Haemotrophic mycoplasmas in South American camelids in Switzerland

    No full text
The red blood cell parasite 'Candidatus Mycoplasma haemolamae', formerly Eperythrozoon, is known to be widespread in South American camelids in the USA, causing anaemia in affected animals. Up to now, haemotrophic mycoplasmas were not observed in South American camelids in Europe; however, they were known in a herd of alpacas in Switzerland and to identify them as 'Candidatus M. haemolamae'. Possible ways of transmission are discussed

5G Multi-Tier Handover with Multi-Access Edge Computing: A Deep Learning Approach

    No full text
The research presented in this thesis discusses the potential enhancement of 5G multi-tier handover. This proposal will utilise two of 5G’s enabling technologies, multi-access edge computing (MEC) and machine learning (ML). MEC and ML techniques are believed to be the primary enablers for enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable and low latency communication (URLLC). The subset of ML that was chosen for this research is deep learning (DL), as it is great at learning long-term dependencies. A variant of artificial neural networks called a long short-term memory (LSTM) network is used in conjunction with a lookup table (LUT), as part of the proposed solution. Subsequently, edge computing virtualisation methods are utilised to reduce handover latency and increase overall throughput of the network. In addition to the proposed, this thesis analyses the validity of various other potential solutions such as multi-connectivity, cloud centralised radio access networks (Cloud C-RAN) and artificial intelligence (AI). To implement the proposed algorithm, a software simulation of a multi-tier 5G heterogeneous network is developed, based on the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) standards for: channel models, schedulers, and handovers. This simulator provided the tools for the author to analyse and evaluate the feasibility of the proposed solution. The results gained from the research was promising. It showed a 40−60% improvement in overall throughput under high user densities. Although the proposed scheme may increase the number of handovers, it is effective in reducing the handover failure (HOF) and Ping-Ping rates in higher user density scenarios by 30%, and 86% respectively, compared to current state-of-the-art. In conclusion, a detailed analysis was undertaken, and the aims of the research were satisfied

Moderating effect of error source on the continued influence of retracted disclosure on individual investors’ judgements

I conduct an experiment, using M.B.A. students as proxies for individual investors, to examine the impact of error source (management versus press) on the continued influence of retracted disclosures. Given the increasing role of third parties in disseminating information, it is important to examine the moderating effect of error source, a factor not previously emphasized in prior research on the continued influence effect. The experimental results show that investors are more susceptible to the continued influence effect when the error is from the press (rather than from the management), adding to the concern raised by policy makers over the quality of information provided by outside organizations. Additional analysis reveals that the differential effect found is mediated by the level of scepticism experienced by the participants. Contrary to previous research, my results provide evidence that post-exposure scepticism may moderate the continued influence effect, under the conditions of task familiarity and clarity of actual error. Implications for regulators and researchers are also discussed.Ministry of Education (MOE)Submitted/Accepted versionThe author acknowledges research funding received from the Singapore Ministry of Education

This report serves to provide insights into the details and knowledge of the speech recognition system developed by the author throughout the entire period of the final year project. The report starts with the historical background of speech recognition systems, giving a brief introduction on the progression of the various speech recognition systems throughout the years. It then introduces the purpose and usage of speech recognition systems in today’s society. The next part of the report is the literature review of the subject, which consist of detailed explanations on the internal of the various components present in the speech recognition system as well as how the components are utilized in the speech recognition system. The report then introduces and explains the various function developed by the author in the speech recognition system implemented, together with an elaborate explanation on the usage of system developed accompanied with detailed illustrations. The report then presents the various experiments conducted on the system, providing experimental results coupled with an analysis of the observations made. The last section of the report then gives the recommendations and future works with regards to speech recognition.Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering

Automated non-destructive (NDT) technique based on the alternating current field measurement (ACFM)

    No full text
This thesis reports on the development of an automated NDT inspection PC system. The system is based on an ACFM Crack Microgauge Model U10, a Kawasaki JS-5 manipulator and a Microsoft Windows equipped personal computer which executes the software developed by the author. An ACFM pencil-probe, carried by the manipulator, is moved over the structures to be examined. The crack Microgauge measures the magnetic field intensity value. The application software is used to control and communicate with the crack Microgauge and the manipulator, analyse ACFM the data, and detect cracks.Master of Engineering (MPE

News you can refuse: If news is important, why aren’t more people willing to pay for it?

    No full text
Guided by public goods and uses and gratifications theories, this study examines the link among motivations for news consumption, perceived importance of news, and willingness to pay for news. Through a national online survey in Singapore (n = 818), this study found that both entertainment and socialisation motivations are positively related to willingness to pay for news, while surveillance motivation was not. The analysis also found that perceiving news to be personally important is positively related to willingness to pay for news; in contrast, perceiving news to be important to society was unrelated to willingness to pay for it. While surveillance motivation was not directly related to willingness to pay for news, it exerts an indirect effect through perceived personal importance of news. These findings challenge conventional assumptions about the drivers of news subscriptions and offer pivotal insights for news organisations seeking sustainable revenue models in an era of media transformation.Ministry of Education (MOE)The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article: this work was supported by the Singapore Social Science Research Council; MOE2018-SSRTG-022

Development of pathological tremor cancelling for human-machine interaction

    No full text
The project investigates the collaboration in human-machine interaction for the control system of robot with joystick as the user input interface. The purpose of this project is to implement an online pathological tremor cancelling method in hu-man-machine interaction. Current development of the project is the intention recognition system with filtering ability (IRS-F). The system can be divided into three main modules and one sub-module. The main modules are inferring module, decision making module, and behavior module. The sub-module is the feature recognition module. This project only focused in the inferring module of the system which uses the Bayesian theorem and Dynamic Bayesian Network as the basic architecture. In the previous system, the concept of fuzzy logic was implemented to the system by creating the overlapping regions as the tolerance for the tremor. Due to non-stationary process of pathological tremor, there is a major drawback in the fuzzy logic system when the tremor atte-nuates. Prior knowledge is required about the tremor. If a case is missed, the control-ler would not work properly. It is complicated to make so many different fuzzy states for every different case. The system is not able to compensate for the non-stationary process of pathological tremor. Hence, the author tried to overcome this problem by implementing a filter so that it is able to adapt itself to the tremor characteristics. Weighted-frequency Fourier linear combiner is well-suited for this application be-cause of its ability to estimate the tremor frequencies as well as amplitudes and then cancels the tremor. A simple 2D simulation program which requires the user to follow a narrow track was produced to measure the performance of the filter. When the simulation test had been successful, experiments were done to user with tremor to see the online cancelling of pathological tremor for computer input with WFLC filter.Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering
