Rapanui Wicker Figures and their Names

    No full text
We know from different sources that small human figures in bark-cloth as well as large wicker figures were used in ancient times on Easter Island. There are now only three bark-cloth images in two museums of the world--Boston and Belfast. Their ancient name is forgotten by the Rapanui. Of the large wicker figures, none survive and we know them only from descriptions made by voyagers and scientists. These two types of anthropomorphic figures are very interesting, not only as art objects, but also as attributes of the ritual practices of the Easter Islanders. Some features of the small bark-cloth figures are described in early publications and reports, including one by the author of this article.</p

Federal Jurisdiction: A Proposal to Simplify the System to Meet the Needs of a Complex Society

Co-author: James William MooreProfessors Wicker and Moore tackle the seemingly age-old problem of gridlock in the courts. They provide the following suggestions: 1) original jurisdiction should implement the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure; 2) venue and process should support the functioning of the Rules; 3) jurisdictional amount should be eliminated; 4) removal jurisdiction should be reduced to a minimum; and 5) diversity jurisdiction should be retained, but simplified

The carbon footprint of active sport participants

Wicker P. The carbon footprint of active sport participants. Sport Management Review. 2019;22(4):513-526.Researchers examining carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions (carbon footprint) in sport have focused on sport events and, to a lesser extent, sport teams, but provided only average or aggregate values. The author takes the perspective of active sport participants and considers the heterogeneity of individual sport participation behavior. Using online surveys, adult active sport participants (n = 6537) in 20 different sports with main residence in Germany were asked to report their sport-travel behavior in 2015, including traveling in the context of regular (weekly) activity, sport competitions/tournaments, league games, day trips, and training camps/vacations. Annual carbon footprints were estimated using information about travel distances and transportation means. The results revealed an average annual carbon footprint of 844 kg of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions, with individual sports producing more emissions than team/racket sports. Participants in nature sports had the highest emission levels. Regression analyses revealed that environmental consciousness significantly reduced carbon footprint in individual sports, but not in team/racket and nature sports, supporting the existence of an environmental value-action gap. Activity years, club membership, weekly exercise hours, performance level, and income were mainly positively associated with annual carbon footprint, while gender was insignificant. The findings have implications for policy makers and managers in sport associations and clubs

Exploring Scheduling Policies for UAV Swarms

    No full text
54 pagesUAV swarms have gained popularity over the past years, with increased accessibility contributing to new research areas and applications. The increased complexity of handling of UAVs swarms and assigning multi-phase applications results in the need for efficient task assignment for UAV swarms. The project extends an existing UAV swarm simulator to enable comparison of scheduling algorithms and techniques. The simulator is easily augmentable and provides a simple-to-use interface for the specification of complex applications. The evaluation of five scheduling algorithms shows that existing solvers for global problem optimization outperform naive scheduling approaches in terms of performance and assignment quality. Adaptive task batching and the utilization of cloud resources can lead to better task assignments with lower overhead and reduce the computational burden on the swarm
