    Franz Werfels Roman Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh entstand zwar kurz vor der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten und der Exilierung des Autors, zudem beschreibt er eine konkrete, historisch fixierbare Episode des jungtürkischen Genozids an den Armeniern im Sommer 1915, dennoch gelingt es Werfels Text, eine überindividuelle Opfer-Psychologie zu skizzieren, die auch an die Leidtragenden des Holocaust denken lässt. In der Zeichnung der Hauptfiguren Gabriel, Iskuhi, Juliette und Stephan zeigt sich eine facettenreiche Phänomenologie des Leidens unter Verfolgung, Gewalt, Exil. Der Roman thematisiert anhand seiner Protagonisten aber auch die Chancen und möglichen Probleme von bikulturellen Identitätsentwürfen, gerade in Zeiten des nationalen Chauvinismus, sowie allegorische Verdichtungen einer existentiellen Fremdheitserfahrung, samt deren ethischen Dimensionen
