Aura, Experience, History : Walter Benjamin’s pessimism and utopian potential
This paper deals with three central notions of Walter Benjamin?s philosophy: "aura?, "experience", and "history". The paper aims to determine the notion of the aura in context of Benjamin?s philosophy of history. First and foremost (in chapter 1) it is necessary to analyse the notion within the most important of Benjamins?s works. In doing so, it becomes evident that Benjamin?s theory of experience is crucial to this matter. To get a detailed understanding of this theory, one is once more thrown back to Benjamin?s philosophy of history. "Experience as such", one of Benjamin?s key aspects, is indeed historically determined. Benjamin?s main work on the philosophy of history, "the arcades project", has been descended only as fragment. In chapter 2 the foundation of Benjamin?s complex philosophy of history is inquired. This foundation is Benjamin?s unorthodox adoption of central ideas of the lurianic Kabbalah, which Benjamin came to know mainly via Gershom Scholem. In the third chapter Benjamin?s philosophy of the history of the 19th century will be examined: first generally and then in respect of three key aspects which are the cause of a transformation of experience in the 19th century. These three important notions are: work, commodity fetishism and the transformation of communication. In the last chapter the function of the notion of the aura will be synthetically determined in the light of Benjamin?s philosophy of history. On the one hand, "aura" is a bourgeois category, on the other hand and in a positive way, the aura shows itself as imagination of active subjects. "Aura" is, in this sense, the category which is able to show the historical truth in a flash. In this sense, aura is the prerequisite for messianic redemption, which Benjamin?s philosophy is all about.vorgelegt von Stefan EdererAbweichender Titel laut Übersetzung der Verfasserin/des VerfassersZsfassung in dt. und engl. Editorial
The euro crisis remains at the centre of the economic policy debate. The member states of the European Monetary Union have adopted fiscal austerity programmes which imply a very restrictive overall fiscal stance for the years to come. Stefan Ederer argues in the Forum section of this issue that the current reforms are largely missing the point and neglect the structural causes of the crisis. Ederer pleads for a better coordination of fiscal policies, based on public expenditure paths rather than uniform deficit targets. A more balanced approach for fiscal policies and vigorous stabilisation measures on the financial markets are prerequisites for the return to longer term economic stability and the reduction of unemployment. The Forum section is completed by an interview with Malcolm Sawyer
Competition-oriented Wage Policy and Its Effects on Aggregate Demand in the Netherlands
This paper aims at empirically assessing the demand effects of changes in functional income distribution for the Netherlands. Based on a Neo-Kaleckian theoretical macroeconomic model, equations for the main demand aggregates (consumption, investment, exports and imports) are estimated. The effect of an increase in the wage share on these aggregates is calculated from comparative static. Alternatively, a simulation of this effect is run by means of a small macroeconomic model. An increase in the wage share would have positive effects on consumption and affects investment and net exports negatively. The overall effect is still positive; the demand regime is wage-led. A shift in income distribution from profits to wages would therefore stimulate aggregate demand. The Dutch wage policy since 1982 which aimed at restraining real wages seems to have increased international competitiveness but not aggregate demand.consumption, distribution, demand, foreign trade, investment, Keynesian economics, macroeconomics
Upswing with Stronger Momentum, but Subject to Higher Risks. Economic Outlook for 2011 and 2012
The cyclical upswing in Austria continues. Driven by the swift expansion of global activity, exports are posting strong gains. Meanwhile, the momentum is being transmitted to private investment which is set to rise substantially over the forecast period. Short-term indicators suggest that the positive trend will persist in the first half of 2011 before moderating somewhat in parallel with developments abroad, under the impact of rising commodity and energy prices and a more restrictive policy stance in both the industrialised and the emerging economies. Further ahead, demand and output growth is set to regain momentum. For Austria, WIFO expects GDP to increase by 2.5 percent in 2011 and 2.0 percent in 2012. The major risk for the upswing currently derive from the drift in commodity and energy prices which may have a substantial impact on the world economy.Economic Outlook
Winkelverteilungen und Zeitordnung in Doppelionisation von Helium: Annäherung an das Regime der langen Wellenlängen
With the progress in laser technologies over recent years it has become possible to create coherent and intense extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulses via high-harmonic generation with durations of only a few femtoseconds or even reaching the attosecond regime. This development has started the field of attosecond science which has enabled detailed studies of electron dynamics with a time resolution down to single attoseconds. In order to ultimately be able to control electrons and their motion with all-optical devices, it is a necessity to fully understand the fundamentals of light-matter and electron-electron interaction on this time scale. Double ionization of helium provides the ideal testbed to obtain insights into the electron dynamics in the full three-body Coulomb break-up process, as the process is simple enough such that ab-initio computations are numerically feasible. While the two extremal cases of few-photon and strong-field double ionization have been studied extensively, the regime in between where 4 to 20 photons are needed to overcome the double ionization threshold of helium has not gained a lot of attention. The reason for this is the numerical complexity and experimental limitations to generate intense light pulses for < 400 nm. Within this thesis we aim at bridging this gap starting from one-photon double ionization, increasing successively the wavelength of the ionizing light field until we approach the experimentally strong-field regime. To do so we employ state of the art ab-initio simulations. To characterize the influence of electron-correlation onto the double ionization process, we study similarities and differences in the angular emission pattern over a broad range of wavelengths
Weltkonjunktur Weltwirtschaft Euro-Krise
Employment, Inflation and Income Distribution in an Open Economy. Pricing-to-market in a Modified NAIRU Model
The paper modifies a standard NAIRU model by implementing "pricing-to-market" as the basic assumption for the price setting behaviour of firms in an open economy. This entirely changes the outcomes of the model: First, inflation in equilibrium is stable at any rate of unemployment; the long-run Phillips curve is horizontal. Second, income distribution varies with the level of employment. Third, supplemented with a demand equation which allows for effects of both income distribution and international competitiveness, the NAIRU ceases to be a "strong attractor". These characteristics to a certain extent open up the space for expansive wage and demand policies.Wages, Inflation, NAIRU, Demand, Distribution
European Monetary Union in Crisis
The world economy has gone through two years of a mixed but relatively strong recovery. In the European Union, however, the rebound was much less pronounced than in the rest of the world. Strong exports to the fast-growing emerging economies lead to a powerful upswing in some countries of the euro area, notably in Germany, and suggested in spring 2010 that the financial and economic crisis of 2008-09 had been overcome. The crisis seemed to continue merely in some "peripheral" countries, mostly in southern Europe, which were struggling with high budget deficits and/or high government debt. This impression was deceptive. The financial crisis had not been overcome, but, rather, passed into a crisis of confidence in public finances. It dampened growth and prevented a self-sustained upswing in the euro area. The "euro crisis" has intensified noticeably during recent months and is by now the greatest risk for the global economy. So far, all attempts of EU governments to contain the crisis have failed.Weltkonjunktur Weltwirtschaft Euro-Krise
