No full textIn February 1861 Washington was alarmed by rumors that secessionists planned to seize the city and make it the capital of the Confederacy. The print may have been produced in that context, or during Lincoln's call to arms and rather anxious military build-up of the capital in April. Here, General in Chief of the Army Winfield Scott, who engineered the Washington defense, is portrayed as a fierce bulldog. He stands guard defiantly over a large cut of beef representing Washington, as a greyhound wearing a broad-brimmed planter's hat and wrapped in a Confederate flag (Confederate president Jefferson Davis) slinks away to the left. Beyond the greyhound are bales of cotton, a bone, and an animal skull. A small snake coils threateningly in the grass. A palmetto tree, emblem of secessionist leader South Carolina, rises in the distance. On the right, behind the bulldog, are barrels of "mess pork," beans, beef, sacks of money, and a large cannon. The stars and stripes fly over them. Another version--a crude, slightly smaller copy of this or of a common model, but without the printer's imprint and copyright line--is also in the Library's collection (Stern Collection, portfolio 4, no. 2). Weitenkampf lists four versions. Grant (II, p. 5-35) reproduces several versions of the design on patriotic envelopes in use in June, July, and August 1861. No full text© 2003 Nature Publishing Group All rights reservedFunctional expression cloning strategies are highly suitable for the analysis of the molecular control of apoptosis. This approach has two critical advantages. Firstly, it eliminates prior assumptions about the properties of the proteins involved, and, secondly, it selectively targets proteins that are causally involved in apoptosis control and which affect the crucial cellular decision between survival and death. The application of this strategy to the isolation of cDNAs conferring resistance to dexamethasone and italic gamma-irradiation resulted in the isolation of a partial cDNA for the catalytic subunit of protein phosphatase 4 (PP4). Cells transfected with this partial cDNA in an expression vector downregulated PP4 and were resistant to both dexamethasone and UV radiation, as demonstrated by both membrane integrity and colony-forming assays. No full textThe purpose of this study was to determine the appropriate approach and method for measuring the performance of the investment, if the return data provided just a little or the data don’t follow the normal distribution. Then, apply it in a real case, that is, investment portfolio performance measurement of a pension fund managed by a private university in Malang town. Data processing was aided by MS Excel which the steps are calculating the average return (mean), standard deviation, VaR and CVaR, deviation VaR and CVaR, BI rate and STARR both in the case of a Gaussian distribution and T-Student. The result of the analysis showed that the T-Student distribution approach and STARR method are better to use for measuring pension fund investment performance than the Gaussian distribution approach and traditional Sharpe method. Two investment instruments that have the best performance are a Direct Placement and Property.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pendekatan dan metode yang tepat untuk mengukur kinerja investasi jika data return yang tersedia sedikit atau data tidak mengikuti distribusi normal. Kemudian menerapkan pendekatan dan metode tersebut ke dalam kasus real yaitu pengukuran kinerja portofolio investasi salah satu Dana Pensiun yang dikelola oleh perguruan tinggi swasta di kota Malang. Proses pengolahan data dibantu dengan program komputer MS Excel dengan tahapan penghitungan rata-rata return, deviasi standar, VaR dan CVaR, deviasi VaR dan CVaR, BI rate dan STARR baik dalam kasus distribusi Gaussian maupun T-Student. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa pendekatan distribusi T-Student dan metode STARR lebih tepat digunakan untuk mengukur kinerja investasi Dana Pensiun daripada pendekatan distribusi Gaussian dan metode Sharpe sederhana. Dua instrumen investasi yang memiliki kinerja terbaik adalah Penempatan Langsung serta Tanah dan Bangunan
