    Whistle-blowing and Education Management

    No full text
Contemporary management studies usually concern positive and desir- able solutions that increase the organizational effectiveness and perfor- mance. That is why graduates of higher business schools, equipped with idealistic views on business environment, need to face the dark side of business practice without the appropriate preparation. Their unawareness of the risk associated with management misconduct results in corrupt scandals, erosion of public trust to their organizations, or even the collapse of profitable corporations. Underestimation of unethical behaviors may lead to severe consequences. The last decade, in fact, has been abundant in numerous examples of corruption scandals in modern organizations and instances of management misconduct that have eroded public faith (such as Enron, WorldCom, Tyco, Adelphia, Arthur Andersen, and Parmalat). These repeated misconducts have led scholars to pay more attention to the so-called “dark side” of organizations. In the current book and journal publications, the “dark side” is pursuit as abnormal, dysfunctional, or pathological aspects of business and education. Indeed, we should say that the “dark side” is not excep- tional: it is a part of the normal community of everyday organizational activities. There are three main reasons for this book. First, since there is a highly active dark side to the organizations, which is quite unknown in management studies, this book attempts to shed the light on the practical challenges for business practice and for higher education management that come from misconduct occurring in various aspects of business and educational environment. Second, research on the “dark side” is a new, emerging source of research in the area of business and higher education management. Finally, it is virtually impossible to carry all the works and research on the development of positive, bright sides of business and higher education without a thorough knowledge and understanding of the destructive, dark sides of organizations that have led and still lead to the collapse of many organizations and a decline in public confidence in the corporations and their leaders

Students can learn to analyse questions of ethics from the philosophical perspectives of duties, consequences and virtues. This includes the development of empathy and moral courage. Our brains respond to the experiences of others using 'empathy neurons'; we are 'hard-wired' for empathy. Developing moral courage can be linked to the development of empathy, drawing on 'ethics of care' theories. Graduates who express empathy for their colleagues and care for themselves are better equipped to act ethically. We show how learning experiences can enable students to develop problem-solving responses as an alternative to 'fight or flight' reactions to ethical problems. We can help students to develop expertise in ethics by providing them with more opportunities to engage rationally and empathically with ethical problems, through active learning experiences followed by critical reflective processes. Discussing moral exemplars in active learning helps to avoid a cynical view that unethical behaviour is normal. Critical reflection encourages students to make more use of their rational and empathic capacities. The theory of cognitive dissonance helps students to become aware of how we tend to seek information that confirms our decisions while avoiding information that would alert us to ethical hazards

The Subterfuge of Business Integrity: Legal Complicity with Criminal Organizations in Italy

Widely reported corporate scandals and managerial misconducts, ranging from systemic accounting fraud to individual executive greed, have increasingly drawn the attention of business scholars to the need of a new quest for integrity in business. The quest for integrity should go beyond the pure and simple impact produced by the mentioned and well-known big corporations scandals. In fact, looking at the figures of financial resources controlled and earned by criminal organizations, we should also carefully consider the influence exerted by criminal organizations onto the whole economic system. In our paper, we intend to analyze the concept of integrity, focusing on an inter-organizational level, analyzing those cases in which legitimate firms are controlled or influenced by a criminal organization. Adopting this perspective, we focus our attention on the behavior held by firms in contexts characterized by a strong presence of criminal organizations. We describe the analysis of three Italian cases, different in terms of geographical location, sector of activity and nature of organizational actors involved
