Pomiędzy sukcesem a dyskryminacją

    Get PDF

    Palamism and the Icon

    Get PDF
The theory of hesychasm which was systematized in the 14th century by St. Gregory Palamas is known as Palamism. Palamism focused on the problem of God’s essence and energies, claiming among others that God allows Himself to be known only through His energies whereas His essence remains unknown and is beyond any cognition. Divine energies are represented by an omnipresent supernatural light, expressed in icons by such colours as gold, pure yellow or white. This light is also sometimes indicated by the colour of the assist or the filling of the background and the nimbus. The icon that explicitly expresses and presents the transformation effected by Divine energies is The Transfiguration o f Christ although in fact every icon is meant to lead to transformation. Palamism originated from a controversy between the monk Barlaam and St. Gregory Palamas

Wokół chrztu Rusi Kijowskiej do czasów Włodzimierza I Wielkiego

The evangelization of Kievan Rus’ had already begun under the reign of Princess Olga, who was baptized, according to popular belief, in Constantinople. However, it was her grandson, Prince Vladimir I the Great, who was the true baptizer of Rus’. He was the one who brought his principality to baptism, but failing to eradicate paganism. However, this prince’s decision to receive baptism appeared to be motivated more by political than religious considerations. Rus’s reputation as a Christian country was boosted by crediting its evangelization to the apostle Andrew personally. Apart from this apostle, Prince Vladimir was also likened to Moses, Kings David and Solomon, as well as St. Paul and St. George, while Princess Olga was linked to St. Mary Magdalene and St. Helena, all of whom were regarded as baptizers of Rus. The granting of this sacrament to Princess Olga, Prince Vladimir’s prior awareness of Christianity, and the presence of Christians in his troop were the circumstances most conducive to the Ruthenian ruler’s embrace of baptism. This is the subject of the article. Pawłem i św. Jerzym porównywano księcia Włodzimierza, natomiast księżną Olgę ze św. Marią Magdaleną i św.

St Demetrius as a winner of an evil in the Byzantine and Slavic tradition (till the fifteenth century)

    Get PDF
Evil wins by good, darkness by light and profanum by sacrum in every tradition. The saints, and between them St Demetrius of Thessaloniki too, achieves an analogous victory. St Demetrius was a deacon, but he is most often presented as a soldier for example in art. The legend says that St Demetrius defeated the scorpion (the personification of evil) by the sign of the cross in prison. This saint can also win with the gladiator Lieus, emperor Maximian, tsar Kaloyan or the Turk instead of the scorpion, and he does it on horseback or on foot, with a weapon or by the calcatio gesture. Not only are there historical sources, liturgical texts or belles-lettres presenting St Demetrius, but also art as well as folklore.W każdej tradycji zło jest zwyciężane przed dobro, ciemność przez światłość, profanum przez sacrum. Analogiczne zwycięstwo odnoszą święci, a wśród nich św. Demetriusz z Tesaloniki.

The icon of The Descent of the Holy Spirit includes a mission message. The origins of the iconography of this mystery date back to the 6th century. The icon of Pentecost depicts the apostles, and an empty place between them, destined for the coming again of Jesus Christ. Adam was presented below, and then the pagans as representatives of the peoples and nations to whom the apostles are sent. Later in this place is presented Old King as a personifi cation of the Cosmos, that is here a personifi cation of all creatures. The apostles, as the fi rst missionaries, will proclaim the Gospel to this Cosmos. The icon of The Descent of the Holy Spirit includes a mission message.
