Spitz naevus is rare in Korea
No full textBACKGROUND: Spitz naevi have not been widely studied in Asians.
AIM: To compare the epidemiology and clinicopathological features of Spitz naevi in Koreans with lesions in western countries.
METHODS: In total, 80 Spitz naevi in 77 patients diagnosed over 10 years at 17 university hospitals in Korea were analysed.
RESULTS: The relative incidence of Spitz naevus vs. MM was 1 vs. 10.9. In most patients (75%) the Spitz naevi had been present for > 6 months. The size of the lesion was relatively large. Histologically, most of the lesions (54%) were the dermal type and pigmentation was common (49% of lesions). Immunohistochemical study found that all of the 34 lesions were positive for S-100 protein but only 14 (47%) were positive for HMB-45.
CONCLUSION: Spitz naevus is rare in Korea. The lesions were more commonly larger, pigmented, and of the dermal type than reported in western countries.ope

Absence of BRAF and HRAS mutations in eruptive Spitz naevi
No full textP>Background Eruptive Spitz naevi have been reported rarely in the literature. In solitary Spitz naevi, BRAF and HRAS mutations, as well as increased copy numbers of chromosome 11p have been identified. Objectives To investigate the genetic changes underlying eruptive Spitz naevi. Methods We report on a 16-year-old boy who developed multiple disseminated eruptive Spitz naevi within a few months. We analysed BRAF, HRAS, KRAS and NRAS genes in 39 naevi from this patient for hotspot mutations. Furthermore, comparative genomic hybridization analysis was performed in three lesions. Results None of the Spitz naevi displayed a mutation in the analysed genes, and no chromosomal imbalances were observed. Conclusions Our results indicate that the typical genetic alterations described in solitary Spitz naevi appear to be absent in eruptive Spitz naevi. Yet unknown alternative genetic alterations must account for this rare syndrome

Laboratory for Underground Science will look for evidence
of CP-violation in the neutrino sector, an ingredient in theories
that seek to explain the matter/antimatter asymmetry
in our universe. It will make a precision measurement of
the oscillations of muon antineutrinos to electron antineutrinos
using multiple neutrino sources created by low-cost
compact cyclotrons. The experiment utilizes decay-at-rest
neutrino beams produced by 800 MeV protons impinging
a beam target of graphite and copper. Two well established
Monte Carlo codes, MARS and GEANT4, have been used
to optimise the design and the performance of the target. A
study of the results obtained with these two codes is presented
in this paper
