In Anbetracht der Sorge über den Rückgang des Sozialkapitals und der deshalb befürchteten Konsequenzen für die politische Partizipation untersucht dieser Artikel anhand der Daten des European Value Survey (1999/ 2000), inwiefern westeuropäische Jugendliche im Alter zwischen 18 und 25 Jahren Sozialvermögen im Sinne von Mitgliedschaften in formellen Organisationen und informellen Netzwerken haben, ob Jugendliche tatsächlich politikverdrossen sind, und ob bzw. wie dies mit einem möglicherweise fehlenden Sozialvermögen in Zusammenhang steht.' Reflecting fears about decreasing 'social capital' and its consequences for political participation, this article - based on European Value Survey data (1999/ 2000) - analyses to which extent Western European young people (aged 18-25 years) are members of formal social organizations and informal social networks. Do these juveniles express social capital and are they alienated from politics? Furthermore, the question is investigated whether this alienation is linked to social incapacity.' (author's abstract)

No full textDie Friday for Future Schulstreiks haben die Besorgnis junger Menschen über die sich rapide verschlechternden Lebens- und Überlebenschancen zukünftiger Generationen menschlicher und nicht-menschlicher Lebewesen anschaulich demonstriert. Die Ambivalenz der Jugendlichen zwischen Verzweiflung und Hoffnung, Gefühle der Machtlosigkeit und des Empowerments fordern uns heraus, die Komplexität und Dynamik nicht nur von Ökosystemen, sondern von sozio-ökologischen Systemen zu erkennen und das mechanistische und lineare Denken zu hinterfragen, das in der Jugendforschung und Erziehungswissenschaft oft vorherrscht. Dieser Denkanstoß lädt die Leser*innen dazu ein, die Erfahrungen junger Menschen mit der Klimakrise und der (Klimawandel‑)Bildung aus der Perspektive der Theorie komplexer adaptiver Systeme zu betrachten, um Lernräume für gesündere und kreativere Antworten auf die Herausforderung zu eröffnen.The Friday for Future school strikes have vividly demonstrated young people’s concern for the rapidly deteriorating life and survival chances of future generations of human and nonhuman beings. The young people’s ambivalence between despair and hope, feelings of powerlessness and empowerment challenge us to recognise the complexity and dynamic not only of ecosystems but of socio-ecological systems and to question the mechanistic and linear thinking often prevalent in youth research and education science. This thinkbite invites readers to consider young people’s experiences with the climate crisis and (climate change) education through the perspective of Complex Adaptive System Theory to open up learning space for more wholesome and creative responses to the challenge.Version of recor

Get PDFThe Anthropocene has come to signify human dominance over the more-than-human world with all its negative consequences for this planet%s human and nonhuman inhabitants. As young people have started to express their feelings of concern and frustration with the inertia of the political elites, youth research, too, is called upon to reconsider and broaden its perspective. In particular, we argue, that the Anthropocene challenges anthropocentrism, dualisms, and traditional notions of agency in youth research, and must be critiqued through multi-disciplinary investigation. A transgression of the mainstream paradigm in youth research through the perspective of Complex Adaptive Systems Theory (CAS) could provide much needed analyses of a broad range of issues at the intersection of youth and ecological concerns. This article will therefore outline Complex Adaptive Systems Theory (CAS) as a multi-disciplinary tool, and apply it to two examples: the biosocial system of the Elwha River waterscape, and the #Fridays for Future strikes that are both motivated by environmental concerns. Finally, it discusses the possible contributions of a CAS approach in youth research to a better understanding of agency and change in ecologically turbulent times
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Ecodemocracy in Practice: Examples of Forestry and Food Production
No full textSome argue that instrumental anthropocentric values are not the motive enough to protect species and habitats perceived as functionally useless for human welfare. In the current democracies, there is little recognition of “intrinsic value,” “rights,” or “interests” of individual nonhumans and nature as an entity. This chapter aims to address this gap by inquiring what the practical implications of ecodemocracy using examples of forestry and food production are. This chapter addresses if existing democracies were to operationalize ecocentrism in policy-making, what would food production and forestry look like? Moreover, what are alternatives to feeding and housing billions of people without treating “land” just as crops and treating forest, not just as construction wood, decorative hedges, or recreational spaces? This chapter raises practical questions about when ecodemocracy is applied in real-life situations and discusses ways forward by addressing these questions. Some existing forms of democratic representation of nonhumans, or suggestions for possible forms, are discussed in this chapter, including the application of the precautionary principle, the grassroots organizations such as Council of All Beings or the Parliament of Things, the Parties for Animals, and still a possible one, the proxies
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
