This thesis is related with the protection of electrical systems against the effect of lightning. The purpose is to analyse the effect of the mountains on the magnitude and wave-shape of lightning induced voltages on distribution networks. First, a revision of the literature in the field of lightning induced voltages is done. It is found that the majority of the works available on literature consider flat ground. The first approximation proposed in this thesis to calculate lightning induced voltages on non-flat terrains is based on the Finite Difference Time domain method (FDTD) in 2D dimensional cylindrical coordinates. For this reason, conic terrains accompanied of overhead lines parallels to this terrains were simulated. The result was a considerable increase of the induced voltage specially when the slope of the terrain is higher and the conductivity smaller. In order to consider more realistic topographies, a 3D-FDTD method was programmed. Three configurations of non-flat terrains were simulated. In this case, two methodologies were employed: transmission line model (TLM) and Full Wave analysis (FWA). With the aim to validate the developed numerical codes, a reduced scale model was constructed, based on the international experience, but in this case changing the geometry of the terrain, in order to consider its influence. It was found for the built configurations in the reduced scale model a good agreement between simulations and measurements, which validates the developed numerical codes. With the aim to measure lightning induced voltages on distribution networks located on mountains, an autonomous of energy and connected to internet device was designed and constructed with the aim to measure lightning induced voltages caused by direct strikes to the instrumented tower at Morro do Cachimbo Station of the Federal University of Minas Gerais - Brazil. Finally, a real distribution circuit in Colombia was chosen to analyse the effect of the mountains on lightning induced voltages on this lines. It was found that the induced voltages on the relief more typically found in those circuits are significantly affected by the slope and the profile of the terrain. The magnitudes of the induced voltages according to the performed simulations were between 3.7 and 5.1 times the typical values found for flat-terrains simulations. A recommendation is made to include the effect of the terrain in an analytical study as the Montecarlo method developed in the IEEE 1410 StandardDoctorad
Electromagnetic field calculation produced by lightning in non flat terrain and its the effect on the lightning induced voltages on distribution networks
Abstract. This thesis evaluates the influence of the mountains in the electromagnetic field produced by a vertical lightning channel and the lightning induced voltages on distribution networks. The electromagnetic field is calculated solving the Maxwell equations in the different non flat terrain configurations, by means of the finite difference time domain method (FDTD), and the lightning induced voltages resulting of include the last field in the network by means of Agrawal coupling model. It is obtained important variations in the field and lightning induced voltages on distribution networks, compared with the traditional calculus on flat terrain.
The failure rate is the number of events due to direct and indirect lightning strikes that cause a higher voltage than the CFO of the line. This paper focuses on a compact single circuit 15 kV configuration. Due to the presence of the messenger cable in the compact network, the phases of the conductors are protected against direct lightningtype discharges and reduce the stresses induced by lightning impacts to earth. Obtaining the failure rate for direct and indirect lightning strikes in compact distribution lines, serves as a strategy for planning the maintenance of your distribution systems; facing new challenges such as: increased operating costs, demand growth, requirement for high levels of reliability and quality of service. A study of the failure rate in direct and indirect lightning strikes in compact distribution lines is carried out, carrying out simulations in time with statistical models such as: the stratified sampling technique. For the failure rate for indirect impacts, the number of indirect events obtained was 99,021 and direct events 979. In direct impacts, the failure rate for reverse flutter was 5.53
Methodology to calculate the flashover rate of distribution lines against indirect lihgtning strikes in mountainous zones.
PregradoIngeniero ElectricistaThe need to evaluate the performance of the distribution lines against indirect lightning discharges in the mountain systems is one of the main reasons for the realization of this research project, given that the norms and standards do not consider the effects caused by non-flat lands in the induced stresses and in turn in the performance of the distribution line. In view of the problem, a procedure based on the IEEE1410 standard is proposed to estimate the failure rate in non-flat lands. For the development of the process the modifications below were considered: (1) To use the FDTD-3D method for the calculation of induced voltages, because it is possible to include the effects of the terrain. From an existing code implemented in Matlab a new code is generated in Fortran to reduce the time of the simulations. (2) Estimation of the DDT according to the topographic parameter of the altitude. (3) Estimation of the probability of lightning occurrences as a function of altitude. These modifications developed throughout this research project are articulated in chapter 5 with the IEEE1410-2010 standard, indicating the points of the method adjusted for using in mountainous regions. Offering an approach that calculates the failure rate of air distribution lines in non-flat areas, allowing to take the necessary precautions to strengthen and improve the electric power service of the country
Design of a Reduced Scale Model To Measure Lightning Electric Fields Over An Inclined Terrain
Lightning electromagnetic fields have been calculated traditionally considering that terrain is flat. It is important to consider the influence of the orography in the lightning electric fields, specially in countries that are surrounded by mountains. Although, a first approximation to the phenomenal can be obtained by means of the use of numerical methods, a reliable measurement of those fields can be obtained by means of experimentation. In this paper, we present the design of a reduced scale model to measure electric fields near inclined terrains. Also, simulations done by means of the FDTD method are presented with the aim to show the expected measurements of the reduced scale model

First analyzing one that can be obtained integrated with the electrical design, and later by means of passive filters. It is shown the results that it is found with the two methods and how it can be complemented, by means of the simulation in ATP DRAW program
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Abstract. This is a research project which determines the difference of the voltages induced in overhead distribution lines of energy that cross mountainous terrain (non-flat), compared to the values obtained when it's assuming a typical approach of flat terrain. This thesis aims to contribute to the improvement of lightning protection systems for network operators in Colombia, considering that the lightning are responsible for about 70% of faults that occur in distribution circuits caused by direct or indirect strokes. Initially the simulations consider only the paths of Norte de Santader distribution lines and then the transformers and surge arresters are included. At the end it's possible to conclude that is necessary to consider in the design simulations, the features of each circuit such as path, the real topography of the area, circuit elements and physical parameters such as conductivity of the ground.Maestrí
