Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Study of key heavy minerals of phosphorus- and vanadium-rich mineralized rocks of the Bjerkreim-Sokndal layered intrusion (Rogaland)
Get PDFThis thesis studies vanadium- and phosphorus-bearing minerals in rock samples from the Bjerkreim-Sokndal layered intrusion in Rogaland, Norway. Multiple analytical techniques were applied, such as thin-section evaluation in an optical microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), mineral liberation analysis (MLA), and geochemical analyses, to evaluate the abundance and distribution of vanadium and phosphorus in heavy mineral separates from the collected samples. The samples were separated in Australia using Frantz magnetic separation into ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, apatite (> 2.95 g/cm3, 3.3 g/cm3) fractions. These fractions were mounted and scanned using the MLA (mineral liberation analyzer), an electron microscope that utilizes backscattered electrons and software-based mineral classifications to quantify the different mineral species based on their chemical composition. Thresholds for classification had to be manually adjusted to optimize mineral identification. Despite these adjustments, approximately 10-20 % of the counted minerals were unidentified, as they represent lithoclasts composed of multiple mineral phases, including light minerals. The scope of this thesis is the phosphorus-bearing apatites and the vanadium-bearing magnetite. The MLA results, presented in pie diagrams and tables, indicates that the PA1 mounts contain approximately 64% apatite, while the VA1 mounts contain 56% apatite, excluding the nonclassified minerals. In PA1, the fluorapatite makes up 64% of the total apatite and has an average phosphorus content of 14.90 wt%. In the VA1 mounts, fluorapatite constitutes 86% of the apatite, with an average phosphorus content of 15.94 wt%. These values are consistent with the range of phosphorus-rich apatites of 15-19%, reported by Deer, Howie and Zuessman (2013), indicating a high phosphorus concentration in both samples. Geochemical analyses show that the PA1 sample contains 6.06% P2O5, equivalent to 2.7% phosphorus, while the VA1 sample contains 4.8% P2O5, equivalent to 2.1% phosphorus. The vanadium contents in VA1 are 953 ppm (0.0953%), and 700 ppm (0.07%) in PA1. Values over 0.056 - 0.54 wt% are considered high amounts of vanadium in a rock. In both samples, magnetite is identified as the primary host of vanadium, with an average of 0.6 wt%, and maximum values of 1.14 wt% in VA1 and 1.07 wt% in PA1. These results indicate that the VA1 sample contains more vanadium than the PA1 sample, while the PA1 sample contains more phosphorus than the VA1 sample. The results confirm that VA1 is vanadium-rich and PA1 is phosphorus-rich, as described by the mining company that provided the samples. Overall,the samples show significant concentrations of phosphorus and vanadium. Based on these values, 1000 kg of PA1 ore is estimated to contain approximately 27 kg of phosphorus and 0.7 kg of vanadium, while 1000 kg of VA1 is estimated to contain 21 kg of phosphorus and 1
kg of vanadium. The minerals concentration together with the intrusion scale, indicates potential for future resource development
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
