This Paper describes the characteristics of Pyo, one of Burmese ancient classical literary genres and with a focus on the Pyo of Shin Tejosara. The purpose of the paper is to present the characteristics, historical values and knowledge of the Burmese Pyo cannon. The Pyo of Shin Tejosara were utilized as the background literature and the technical approaches of pyo were instruments of the paper. In this regard, it is structured as 1. Literature review, 2. Biography of author, and 3. Pyo of Shin Tejosara. This study is expected to provide a comprehensive information on Burmese classical Pyo

Integration of a Carbon Nanotube Network on a Microelectromechanical Switch for Ultralong Contact Lifetime

    No full text
Micro-/nanoelectromechanical (MEM/NEM) switches have been extensively studied to address the limitations of transistors, such as the increased standby power consumption and performance dependence on temperature and radiation. However, their lifetimes are limited owing to the degradation of the contact surfaces. Even though several materials and structural designs have been recently developed to improve the lifetime, the production of a microswitch that is compatible with a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) with a long lifetime remains a significant challenge. We demonstrate a vertically actuated MEM switch with extremely high reliability by integrating a carbon nanotube (CNT) network on a gold electrode as the contact material using a low-temperature, CMOS-compatible solution process. In addition to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties of CNTs, their deformability dramatically increases the effective contact area of the switch, thus resulting in the extension of the lifetime. The CNT-coated MEM switch exhibits a lifetime that is more than 7 x 10(8) cycles when operated in hot-switching conditions, which is 1.9 x 10(4) times longer than that of a control device without CNTs. The switch also shows an excellent switching performance, including a low electrical resistance, high on/off ratio, and an extremely small off-state current.

Reading School Textbooks as a Cultural and Political Text: Representations of Asia in Geography Textbooks Used in the United States

    No full text
Investigating secondary social studies textbooks, this study examines how Asia is represented and what socio-cultural implications are embedded in the textbook representation of Asia. Using the perspective of cultural studies and postcolonialism, it inquires about how different countries are portrayed to receive differentiated images, how Asia as a whole is represented, and how the textbooks position American readers with regard to the relationship between the U.S. and Asia. The argument ensuing from this investigation is that curriculum scholars need to pay more attention to rethinking how to invite other cultures and societies into school curriculum and how to engage students with people who appear to be different from themselves.   About the Author Won-Pyo Hong received his doctoral degree from Michigan State University. Currently he is a post-doctoral researcher at Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea.  His research interests include curriculum theories and global and multicultural education especially in the Asian context. Cultural Dimensions in User Preferences and Behaviors of Mobile Phones and Interpretation of National Cultural Differences

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to identify the differences in user behaviors and cultural tendencies which will develop a cultural evaluation frame work for mobile phone design among countries in the mobile telecommunication market. Cultural taxonomy helps the understanding of cultural differences. To help understand the Asian market more clearly, a brief overview of Geert Hofstede's findings (Individualism, Uncertainty avoidance, Power distance, Masculinity, and Long-term orientation) and the K.P. Lee's Cultural Variables (Way of Task Handling, Temporal Perception, Conception of Nature, Adherence to rules, Relationship with Human, Nature of Human Activity, Message Contexting, and Expression of Emotion) for the index of different cultures was used in this study. This research is based on an online survey in three countries (Korea, China and Japan), summarizing the responses of questionnaire about user preferences, and behavioral perceptions of UI Design of mobile phones. The result of this research identified the differences and similarities among countries clearly, reorganized the cultural variables. After comparing values of author's value from online survey and two other variables, this study found that Hofstede's and KP Lee's are very meaningful to identify cultural-based national characteristics. This verifies that differences of usage behavior and preference for mobile phone reflect cultural perspectives. This cultural research is the key to understanding these needs and to providing the companies with advanced market positioning. This study should not stop at a simple cross-national comparison but be a cultural comparison framework for giving companies a clear future direction for globalization-based design development. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.N

Torque Improvement of Wound Field Synchronous Motor for Electric Vehicle by PM-assist

    No full text
In order to improve the performance of the wound field synchronous motor (WFSM), the permanent magnet assist (PM-assist) is investigated in this paper. The effect of the PM-assist is dependent on the inserted position of the PMs. Thus, four models whose PMs are inserted at each different position are suggested. Then, the most effective position of the PM is decided by the mean torque per employed amount of the PM. By inserting the PMs into the decided position of a WFSM designed for a small electric vehicle traction, the PM-assisted WFSM is designed. By comparing the torque and the efficiency of the original WFSM and the PM-assisted WFSM, the effectiveness of the PM-assist is figured out. Finally, the validity of this research is verified by the experiment using the manufactured WFSM.This work was supported by Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) Primary Research Program through the National Research Council of Science and Technology (NST) funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) (No. 18-12-N0101-27). Regenerative potential of mouse embryonic stem cell-derived PDGFRα+ cardiac lineage committed cells in infarcted myocardium

BACKGROUND Pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (CMs) have become one of the most attractive cellular resources for cell-based therapy to rescue damaged cardiac tissue. AIM We investigated the regenerative potential of mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC)- derived platelet-derived growth factor receptor-a (DGFRα)+ cardiac lineagecommitted cells (CLCs), which have a proliferative capacity but are in a morphologically and functionally immature state compared with differentiated CMs. METHODS We induced mouse ESCs into PDGFRα+ CLCs and αMHC+ CMs using a combination of the small molecule cyclosporin A, the rho-associated coiled-coil kinase inhibitor Y27632, the antioxidant Trolox, and the ALK5 inhibitor EW7197. We implanted PDGFRα+ CLCs and differentiated αMHC+ CMs into a myocardial infarction (MI) murine model and performed functional analysis using transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and histologic analysis. RESULTS Compared with the untreated MI hearts, the anterior and septal regional wall motion and systolic functional parameters were notably and similarly improved in the MI hearts implanted with PDGFRα+ CLCs and αMHC+ CMs based on TTE. In histologic analysis, the untreated MI hearts contained a thinner ventricular wall than did the controls, while the ventricular walls of MI hearts implanted with PDGFRα+ CLCs and αMHC+ CMs were similarly thicker compared with that of the untreated MI hearts. Furthermore, implanted PDGFRα+ CLCs aligned and integrated with host CMs and were mostly differentiated into α-actinin+ CMs, and they did not convert into CD31+ endothelial cells or aSMA+ mural cells. CONCLUSION PDGFRα+ CLCs from mouse ESCs exhibiting proliferative capacity showed a regenerative effect in infarcted myocardium. Therefore, mouse ESC-derived PDGFRα+ CLCs may represent a potential cellular resource for cardiac regeneration. © The Author(s) 201
