    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Töö eesmärgiks oli uurida ja analüüsida sademevee kvaliteedi ja koguse seireks vajalike andurite paigaldamise ja kasutamise võimalusi Tallinna Vee näitel. Uurimisülesanneteks oli välja selgitada, milliseid andureid on võimalik kasutada sademevee seires, millised on minimaalsed ja maksimaalsed andurite kombinatsioonid, milline on optimaalne lahendus, millised piirkonnad ja trassid oleksid sobilikud andurite paigaldamiseks ning millised on sademevee kvaliteedi hindamiseks vajalikud parameetrid. Töös käsitleti erinevaid andureid, mis on vajalikud sademevee seireks, sealhulgas vooluhulgaandureid, veetasememõõtureid ja kvaliteediandureid, mis mõõdavad pH, lahustunud hapnikku, temperatuuri, elektrijuhtivust ja hägusust. Arutleti ka minimaalse ja maksimaalse andurite kombinatsiooni üle, mis tagaks tõhusa seirevõrgu, kus minimaalne lahendus hõlmaks vaid vooluhulgaandureid ja veetasememõõtureid, samas kui täiendavad vee kvaliteedi andurid oleksid vajalikud kõrge riskiga piirkondades. Paigaldamise kohti valides tuli arvestada peamiste sademevee kogumiskohtade, nagu sademevee kogumiskaevude ja riskipiirkondade, näiteks tööstuspiirkondade või tiheda liiklusega aladega. Uuringu käigus jõuti järeldusele, et pidev ja automatiseeritud seire on oluliselt täpsem ja usaldusväärsem kui traditsioonilised punktproovid, kuna see võimaldab reaalajas jälgida süsteemi seisundit ja reageerida kiiresti esinevatele probleemidele. Andurite paigaldamine vähendab ka inimfaktorist tulenevaid vigu ning aitab vähendada tööjõukulu, kuna andmete kogumine toimub automaatselt ja pidevalt. Seetõttu on oluline, et Tallinna Vesi alustaks andurite paigaldamist ja seirevõrgu arendamist, et tagada süsteemi töökindlus ja vastavus keskkonnanõuetele. Välja toodud ettepanekud keskenduvad seiresüsteemi tõhususe suurendamisele, andurite täpsuse ja töökindluse tagamisele ning andmete kogumise ja analüüsi automatiseerimisele. Ettepanekute kohaselt tuleks paigaldada täiendavaid kvaliteediandureid riskipiirkondadesse ning luua süsteem, mis võimaldab jälgida vee kvaliteedi muutusi sademevee kogumiskohtades. Samuti on oluline, et Tallinna Vesi ja seotud asutused töötaksid välja selged protseduurid andurite hoolduseks ja andmete analüüsimiseks. Töö keskendub ka sellele, kuidas paigaldada andurid olemasolevasse süsteemi ning kuidas tagada andurite töökindlus pikaajaliselt. Edaspidi tuleb rohkem tähelepanu pöörata andurite täpsuse ja töökindluse tagamisele, samuti süsteemi testimisele ja täiustamisele erinevates sademevee kvaliteedi ja koguse muutustes. Kokkuvõttes võib öelda, et sademevee seirevõrgu väljatöötamine ja automatiseerimine on oluline samm Tallinna Vee infrastruktuuri efektiivsemaks ja keskkonnasõbralikumaks muutmiseks. Andurite paigaldamine võimaldab mitte ainult täpsemalt jälgida sademevee kvaliteedi ja koguse muutusi, vaid ka ennetada võimalikke probleeme ja vähendada inimfaktorist tulenevaid vigu. Edaspidi on oluline jätkata katsetusi ja täiustusi seiresüsteemide tõhustamiseks ning tagada nende pikaajaline töökindlus.The topic of this bachelor’s thesis, Development of Stormwater Monitoring Network at Tallinna Vesi, focuses on improving the management of stormwater quality and quantity through the implementation of sensor technologies in the infrastructure of Tallinna Vesi. The purpose of this work is to evaluate and suggest solutions for creating an effective stormwater monitoring system that ensures both the accuracy and reliability of data collection, providing valuable insights for managing stormwater infrastructure and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. In recent years, monitoring stormwater systems has gained increased attention due to the growing concerns over urbanization, climate change, and environmental sustainability. The need for real-time, automated data collection has become critical to identifying potential problems in the stormwater network, preventing system malfunctions, and maintaining the overall health of water bodies. This work is significant as it aligns with modernising water management practices and ensuring Tallinna Vesi’s ability to handle stormwater effectively, improving environmental quality and regulatory compliance. The main aim of this thesis was to analyze and propose an effective sensor network for monitoring stormwater quantity and quality in Tallinna Vesi’s infrastructure. To achieve this, the following tasks were set: 1) Identify the types of sensors suitable for stormwater monitoring. 2) Determine the minimal and maximal sensor combinations for efficient monitoring. 3) Recommend optimal installation sites to ensure accurate and representative data on stormwater quality. 4) Analyse the potential areas and pipelines where the monitoring system could be first tested. 5) Understand the characteristics of stormwater and the specific pollutants that need to be monitored to assess its environmental impact. The research identified several types of sensors necessary for stormwater monitoring, including flow rate sensors, water level gauges, and quality sensors. These quality sensors measure key parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, electrical conductivity, and turbidity, which are critical to understanding stormwater’s environmental impact. The study also concluded that the most effective monitoring system would combine a variety of sensors based on the specific needs of the area. The minimal setup could involve flow rate sensors and water level gauges, suitable for regions where stormwater risks are low. For more critical zones, such as industrial areas or flood-prone regions, additional quality sensors would be required to monitor water quality continuously. The research highlighted the importance of risk zones, where sensor placement should be concentrated, such as stormwater collection points or areas prone to contamination. The study also concluded that the integration of automated monitoring systems offers significant advantages over traditional point sampling methods, primarily in terms of accuracy and speed of data collection. Real-time monitoring allows for early detection of issues, enabling a quicker response and preventive actions. Additionally, continuous data collection reduces human error and the time-intensive nature of manual sampling. Based on the findings, the thesis recommends the following actions for Tallinna Vesi: 1. Sensor Deployment: Implement a combination of flow rate, water level, and water quality sensors, particularly in high-risk and flood-prone areas. These sensors will provide continuous, real-time data on stormwater quality and quantity, helping to detect issues such as contamination or blockages early on. 2. System Integration: Integrate sensors into the existing infrastructure to ensure seamless operation. This includes establishing a robust data management system capable of processing and analysing real-time data effectively. 3. Testing Phase: Begin testing the system in areas with the highest stormwater risks, such as industrial zones, to assess sensor performance and optimise placement. 4. Long-Term Maintenance: Develop a strategy for sensor maintenance and data analysis to ensure that the monitoring system remains operational and accurate over time. The proposed monitoring system would improve Tallinna Vesi’s ability to monitor and manage stormwater, enabling more informed decision-making and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. The automation of data collection and real-time monitoring would also optimize resource allocation by reducing the need for manual intervention, thus increasing efficiency in operations. In the future, further development is needed to improve the integration of the sensor network with advanced predictive analytics, which could enhance the system’s ability to forecast stormwater system failures and environmental threats. Moreover, expanding the monitoring network across broader areas would further refine stormwater management efforts. This thesis contributes to the modernization of Tallinna Vesi’s stormwater management system by providing valuable insights into the technologies and approaches that will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of stormwater monitoring

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
