    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     When Buddha Met a Mountain God A Semiotic Analysis of Musok's Influence on Korean Buddhism at Shinwonsa Temple

    This master’s thesis explores how Musok, Korean shamanism, has influenced Korean Buddhism through visual expressions at Shinwonsa Buddhist Temple in South Korea. The thesis aims to answer the research question: How is Musok’s influence on Korean Buddhism expressed through a semiotic analysis of deity images at Shinwonsa Buddhist Temple. Musok is a folk religious tradition characterized by rituals, nature spirits, and gods, whereas Korean Buddhism is a form of Mahayana Buddhism introduces from China in the 4th century. Using semiotic analysis of deity paintings (Taenghwa) collected during fieldwork at Shinwonsa temple, the thesis analyses iconography and symbolic use related to central deities such as Chilseong, Sanshin, Yongwang, Sambul, and Doksong. The study demonstrates that visual elements from Musok are clearly integrated into Buddhist iconography. This confirms a dynamic syncretism, where Buddhism absorbs and adapts local religious elements from Musok.     Statisk UPS i strømtilførsel til CT - Vurdering av pålitelighet og reduksjon av kostnader

    I denne masteroppgaven blir størrelsen til en uninterruptable power supply (UPS) som har flere computed tomography (CT) skannere tilkoblet, vurdert ved hjelp av klassisk pålitelighetsanalyse. Formålet med dette er å redusere størrelsen, og dermed kostnadene, forbundet med anskaffelsen av UPSen, uten å forringe påliteligheten til strømforsyningen for disse CT-maskinene. CT-maskinen modelleres her som en binær komponent som kan befinne seg i to tilstander. Disse er: Skann eller stand-by. Tilstanden Skann svarer til det maksimale effektbehovet som CT-maskinen kan ha. Det er gjennomført en grundig studie av bruken av CT-maskinene ved St. Olavs hospital. Gjennomsnittlig tid mellom skann og gjennomsnittlig varighet av skann ble beregnet basert på innsamlede data fra dataloggere og strømtenger. Disse dataene danner grunnlaget for modelleringen av CT-maskinen som en binær komponent. Hvis for mange CT-maskiner befinner seg i tilstanden skann på samme tidspunkt, kan dette overbelaste UPSens vekselretter, noe som i sin tur vil gjøre at effekten til disse må flyte utenom UPSens like- og vekselretter, og isteden gå gjennom den statiske bypass switchen. Hovedsakelig må tre kriterier være oppfylt for at strømforsyningen til CT-maskinene svikte: (1) Det er et strømbrudd i nettleverandør sin tilførsel til sykehuset. (2) Nødstrømsaggregatene er ikke operative. Og (3) UPSens vekselretter blir overbelastet og forsøker å koble over til drift i bypass. Gjennom modellering av en Markov-prosess og ved bruk av pålitelighetsnettverk, er tilgjengeligheten og mean time between failure (MTBF) funnet for strømtilførselen frem til CT-maskinene for ulike størrelser av UPS. For de kombinasjonene av antall CT-maskiner og installert effekt på UPSen som gir en tilfredsstillende grad av pålitelighet (i.e. MTBF på over 60 år) har potensielle innsparinger blitt beregnet basert på historiske data fra tidligere sykehusprosjekter i Norge. Ved å neddimensjonere UPSen ut fra antall tilkoblede CT-maskiner, slik at den fortsatt fungerer som forutsatt og sikrer nødvendig systempålitelighet, kan kostnadene direkte forbundet med anskaffelsen av denne reduseres. Gjeldende praksis er at UPSen dimensjoneres lik at den dekker det maksimale effektbehovet til samtlige CT-maskiner som er tilkoblet. I denne masteroppgaven blir det vist at for UPSer som skal forsyne mellom 3 og 5 CT-maskiner, så kan UPSen dimensjoneres for å dekke det maksimale effektbehovet til 2 av disse. Potensialet for besparelsene som kan oppnås for en UPS vil variere fra omtrent 100 000kr til 600 000kr, avhengig av antall CT-maskiner som skal forsynes og hva deres maksimale effektbehov er.In this thesis, the size of an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) connected to multiple computed tomography (CT) scanners is assessed using classic system reliability theory. The goal is to reduce the size and thereby reduce the cost associated with the UPS, without compromising the reliability of the power supply to these CT scanners. The CT scanner is modelled as a binary component. This theoretical construct of a CT scanner can be in one of two states: Scan or Standby, where the state Scan equates to the maximum power demand form the CT scanner. An in-depth study of the utilization of CT scanners at St. Olavs hospital was conducted. The mean time between scans and the mean duration of the scan were calculated based on collected data from data loggers and current probes. The CT scanner is modelled as a binary component based on these results. If too many CT scanners are in a state of Scan at the same time, the UPS inverter may overload and the power flow to those CT scanners may have to bypass the UPS rectifier and inverter and flow through the static bypass switch. Generally, three events may occur: (1) there is a power outage of the mains, (2) the emergency backup generators are not running, and (3) the UPS inverter is overloaded. If all three events occur at ones, then the CT scanners will lose their power supply. By modeling both a Markov process and a reliability block diagram, the availability and mean time between failure are found for the power supply to these CT scanners for different sizes of the UPS. For those configurations of UPS size and numbers of CT scanners that yield an acceptable level of reliability (i.e. MTBF above 60 years), the potential savings are calculated based on historical data from prior construction projects of hospitals in Norway. By rightsizing the UPS for its intended use and necessary level of system reliability, the cost directly associated with the acquisition of a UPS may be reduced. Current practice dictates that a UPS supplying n number of CT scanners should have an output power of at least n times the maximum power demand of the CTs. In this thesis, it is shown that for n between 3 and 5, the UPS may be sized for the maximum power demand of only two of the connected CT scanners. The potential savings may range from about 100 000kr to 600 000kr, depending on the number of CT scanners installed and their maximum power demand

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
