The integration of environmental and social sustainability impacts of the biojet fuel product system within the life cycle assessment framework
The Master's programme Industrial Ecology is jointly organised by Leiden University and Delft University of Technology - Biojet fuel is developed as a potentially more sustainable alternative to existing petroleum based jet fuels. To establish the environmental and social sustainability of the biojet fuel product system, the full life cycle of the production should be analyzed. The environmental LCA (ELCA)and social LCA (SLCA) have been developed as two independent tools, but they cannot be used to analyze the same product system as their system boundaries differ. This research studies the possibility of harmonizing the two tools into a single social and environmental LCA (SELCA) methodology in light of its use in the biojet fuel product system. SELCA was developed through an extensive literature review, followed by catering it to the biojet fuel product system based on a survey and a dummy case study. The ELCA is based on unit processes while the SLCA uses organizations as its base. To reconcile these two system elements, the organizations were treated as multifunctional processes that can be allocated to the product system. The DPSIR model was used to ensure that data on interventions and economic flows were equivalent to each other and capable of being causally connected to the product system. The resulting methodology has consistent system boundaries and data for both social and environmental impacts. The majority of existing SLCA characterization methods and indicators are not compatible with SELCA. Indicators must be based on DPSIR pressure level data and be capable of being aggregated for the product system in order to be comparable to ELCA indicators. Many SLCA methodologies are based on statistical data which conceptually cannot be attributed to a particular organization or unit process. The only operational methodology is that of Hunkeler (2006) which uses quantitative labor hour data. As a methodology for assessing the biojet fuel, SELCA has several limits. The existing indicators do not address all issues considered important by academia and the industry. Also, despite that SELCA can in principle include the full biojet product system, in practice it will be limited by the lack of background databases. This results in more cut-off points and smaller system boundaries as shown in the dummy case study. However, with further research and development of characterization methods and databases, SELCA has the potential to fully integrate the environmental and social impact assessments of the biojet fuel product system.Technology, Policy and ManagementEngineering, Systems and ServicesIndustrial Ecolog

Aleksandra V. Smirnova, Deputy Director for Educational Work, Secondary School No. 119
with in-depth study of English, St. Petersburg; PhD student of the Department of Foreign Languages,
St. Petersburg Academy of Postgraduate Pedagogical Education, Russia.
In the literature, the concept of science education by S.I. Hessen is scarcely described, but at
present it deserves close attention due to a number of reasons: the need to increase the level of scientific
literacy of the Russian population; the absence of a generally accepted concept of scientific literacy in Russian
pedagogy; the need to distinguish between the concepts of “natural science literacy” and “scientific literacy”; lack of a reasonable model for the formation of scientific literacy in the education process.
The purpose of the study is to determine the correlation between the concepts of “natural science literacy”
and “scientific literacy” and to define the significance of the practical implementation of scientific education
proposed by S.I. Hessen in modern conditions. The objectives of the study are to compare the modern
concept of scientific literacy with the theory of science education offered by S.I. Hessen and to determine
the theoretical contribution of this theory to the problem of distinguishing between the concepts of “natural
science literacy” and “scientific literacy”. I compared the main provisions of the theory of science education
with the concept of scientific literacy, presented in the scientific works of Norman Lederman, professor
at the Illinois Institute of Technology, and with the framework documents of the international PISA study.
The author revealed the similarity of the main provisions of the theory of science education developed by
S.I. Hessen, and modern pragmatic concepts of scientific literacy. This conclusion allowed us to rely in our
study on the philosophical and anthropological approach. The author substantiated the distinction between
two types of literacy: scientific literacy and natural science literacy. The hierarchical relationship of types of
literacy was revealed. The author proposed a model of the structure of scientific literacy based on five competencies

Lean Manufacturing approach implementation has had an important participation in productivity improvement in first-rate industries. This approach came from the gathering of the best practices used by the Japanese automotive industries as of the end of the Second World War targeting simultaneously high quality, low costs, lower lead time and enhanced flexibility. Due to high competitiveness in first rate industries, mainly automotive, there is a great effort in applying Lean Manufacturing approach in deeper levels. It is not difficult to verify, that product concept has had an important role on its efficacy, and while on the other hand, one can verify a lack of elements for a proper development of products with focus on Lean Manufacturing approach. Concern to design products that maximize specific characteristics through utilization of Simultaneous Engineering gave birth to DFX tools such as Manufacture (DFM). To this date, no DFX tool has offered enough subsidies to the design team in its task of generating products that will contribute with the implementation of Lean Manufacturing in its entirety, also has Simultaneous Engineering not been properly utilized in the job of involving the Product Design team with Lean Manufacturing approach. The present study seeks to bring forward, in the form of a set of guidelines called Design for Lean Manufacturing (DFLM), the systematization of the best supporting practices for the development of products with focus on the implementation of Lean Manufacturing through Simultaneous Engineering. These guidelines have been put together considering the identification of product requisites pertinent with the implementation of Lean Manufacturing. The proposed systematization focuses conceptual design and detailed design phases of Product Development Process. Proposed guidelines were applied in a case study placed in an automotive facility sector and results indicated they were relatively easy to use as well as significant gains regarding productive process lead time were achieved
[[alternative]]On The Bridge of Heaven Written and Translated by S.I. Hsiung
[[abstract]]The thesis aims to discuss the myth of "authority" with teh case of S.I.Hsiung's English novel, The Bridge of Heaven, and his own translation in Chinese, trying to elaborage on the equality between the author-as-translator and the non-author translators.
The thesis includes 7 chapters. Chapter 1 explains the research purpose and the motivation and outlines teh author of The Bridge of Heaven and the background behind his works. Chapter 2 details the research methods. Chapter 3 focues on literature review, in which the papers about subjectivity and intersubjectivity will be discussed so as to clarify the relationship between the subjectivity does not act as the sole principle for translation; the concept of "the death of author" will be used to break the myth of "authority" so as to subvert the view of father-son relationship that the works was born to its author. Chapter 5 turns to discuss teh translator's subjectivity , arguing that the non-author translators have their own subjectivity different from that of the author's. Hans-Georg Gadamer's viewpoints ofn the historicity of languages will be cited to break the advocacy that the author's own translation is the ideal paradigm. Chapter 6 empasizes on the complementary functions among different translations. Four passages of The Bridge of Heaven will be tgranslated following the principle of loyal to the original words. The translations will work as comparison to S.I.Hsiung's own translation. The purpose is to show different effects fo diversified translations under various subjectivity. Moreover, different translations will touch different points of the original works and displays many aspects of the original. Chapter 7 summarizes that the author's own translation is not necessarily perfect and other non-author translators definitely have the space to let their Muse sing.
