A study of selected Korean pragmatic markers: synchronic and diachronic perspectives

    Get PDF
This dissertation aims to determine the evolutionary pathways and contemporary functions of the following group of Korean pragmatic markers (PM) through an examination of historical and contemporary usage: ceki 'excuse me' vis-a-vis the attention-getter ipwa 'hey/look' and the address form yepo 'honey'; (ke)pwa 'you see'; and issci/isscanha 'you know.' The application of grammaticalization principles and mechanisms to these markers focuses on the area of semantic and pragmatic change. In examining the evolutionary pathways of these markers, emphasis is laid on the following aspects: determining the source and its characteristics; ascertaining the semantic transparency between source and target concepts; establishing grammaticalization mechanisms and principles and the motivation that impelled the grammaticalization process; sketching the developmental clines for the PMs. On the interactional domain the pragmatic markers ceki, (ke)pwa, ipwa, yepo, and issci/isscanha index the speaker's epistemic and affective/interpersonal stances regarding upcoming discourse in relation to interlocutors. On the textual domain these markers function for intra-textual coherence and sequential coordination. Such multifunctionalities are the result of null referential meaning through the grammaticalization process. It is this null referential status that allows pragmatic markers to so effectively mark diverse functions dependent on local speech context at the interactional level. The diachronic development of this group of markers adheres to a key principle of grammaticalization-unidirectionality and regularity in semantic change. Semantic extension of lexical items occurs in the initial stage of the diachronic development of these markers through the intervention of conceptual metaphoric and metonymic processes. Subsequent to semantic generalization and extension, the group of pragmatic markers underwent morpho-phonemic changes as well as change in syntactic distribution and scope. The developmental paths of the pragmatic markers (ke)pwa and issci/isscanha, the attention-getter ipwa, and the address form yepo suggest a new cline of grammaticalization: from a matrix clause to a pragmatic marker through the process of internal coalescence.Ph.D

The main goals of this paper are (a) to state the mission of the Flagship language education that has recently been launched in the United States as a new paradigm of advanced-level foreign language education, (b) to identify and present ten major innovative strategies of the Flagship education that are implemented to achieve the stated Flagship mission, (c) to showcase how these strategies are implemented in Korean language education led by the Korean Language Flagship Center at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and (d) to suggest future directions the education of Korean as a foreign language (KFL) should take. The intent of the paper is to suggest that overall KFL education be restructured, improved, and enhanced in order to train students to achieve superior (professional) level proficiency in language and culture. One well-tested way to accomplish this goal is to follow, as much as needed, the lines implemented by the Flagship education

    Long and Short Forms

In recent generative grammar research, there has been a striking trend toward dealing with minor meaning differences between two syntactically related expressions in the light of universal semantic (e.g. Hoss 1978) or pragmatic (e.g. McCawlcy 1978) principles, While deriving thc two expressions from the same underlying structure. The present paper aims to apply Rosss universal semantic hypothesis (that a short statement is semantically more immediate than the corresponding long one) to some of the most controversial issues in Korean. Korean causatives may be treated à la Ross in that short forms consistently reflect proximate causation and long forms, mediate causation. However, again there are two readings, proximate and mediate, in a large set of short forms, which are regarded as linguisticalIy significant. This means that in Korean there are three, not two, clegrees along the scale of proximate and mediate causalÏon. Accordingly, Rosss proposal needs to be expanded or modifìed in order to accommodate Korean causatives. A further expansion of Rosss proposals may be able to show a parallel between Korean negation and causatives, in that short forms are always related to narrow scope, and long forms to both narrow and wide scope. Rosss proposal may also be modifìed so that certain honorifìc expressions can be handled in a parallel way, since degrees of solidarity have a close bearing on short-long distinctions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
