    First person – Ahmed Elbediwy

First Person is a series of interviews with the first authors of a selection of papers published in Journal of Cell Science, helping early-career researchers promote themselves alongside their papers. Ahmed Elbediwy is the first author on ‘Enigma proteins regulate YAP mechanotransduction’, published in Journal of Cell Science. Ahmed is a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Barry Thompson at The Francis Crick Institute, London, UK, investigating the cytoskeleton, RhoGTPases and the regulation of YAP/TAZ oncoproteins

Syed Qaim Ali Shah sb, Prof, Nisar Ahmed Siddiqui, distinguished guests particularly foreign delegates, it is always a great pleasure to be here in Sukkur and Sukkur IBA and I have followed the great interest the transformation of Sukkur IBA from scratch to what it is today. And I want to congratulate Professor Nisar Siddiqui and his team for the wonderful work they have done, and I hope that they would continue to make a difference in the lives of the students of the rural areas of Sindh who have been not a beneficiary of the best education in this part of the world. So, My Congratulations. I am also very sad that one of the major pioneers of Business Education in this country left us at the very young age; Dr. Hasan Sohaib Murad not only like Nisar created one of the finest universities in private sector by dint of hard work and his focused attention on building a very fine institution; UMT owns everything to one single individual which is Hasan Sohaib Murad. But he was not only concerned with the one particular university. He was very much interested in doing things for business education as a whole. So, he was one of the founders of the Association of Management Development Institutions in Pakistan, and he and I exchanged a lot of notes as to how we can revive the AMDIP as a forum for intellectual contributions of our researchers and also benefit our students in the latest trends in the management education. And, he also persuaded the Higher Education Commission to create the National Business Education Accreditation Council which under his leadership was trying to evaluate the standards of business education in this country. He was the first president of that, and I am very glad that my friend Farrukh Iqbal has taken over from him. And I am sure this council will continue to make its best efforts to create the environment for the growth and improvement of business education in this country

A CNN based coronavirus disease prediction system for chest X-rays

    No full text
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) proliferated globally in early 2020, causing existential dread in the whole world. Radiography is crucial in the clinical staging and diagnosis of COVID-19 and offers high potential to improve healthcare plans for tackling the pandemic. However high variations in infection characteristics and low contrast between normal and infected regions pose great challenges in preparing radiological reports. To address these challenges, this study presents CODISC-CNN (CNN based Coronavirus DIsease Prediction System for Chest X-rays) that can automatically extract the features from chest X-ray images for the disease prediction. However, to get the infected region of X-ray, edges of the images are detected by applying image preprocessing. Furthermore, to attenuate the shortage of labeled datasets data augmentation has been adapted. Extensive experiments have been performed to classify X-ray images into two classes (Normal and COVID), three classes (Normal, COVID, and Virus Bacteria), and four classes (Normal, COVID, and Virus Bacteria, and Virus Pneumonia) with the accuracy of 97%, 89%, and 84% respectively. The proposed CNN-based model outperforms many cutting-edge classification models and boosts state-of-the-art performance

Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning Using Polynomial Transformations for Structured Prediction

    No full text
Many learning problems in computer vision can be posed as structured prediction problems, where the input and output instances are structured objects such as trees, graphs or strings rather than, single labels {+1, −1} or scalars. Kernel methods such as Structured Support Vector Machines , Twin Gaussian Processes (TGP), Structured Gaussian Processes, and vector-valued Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces (RKHS), offer powerful ways to perform learning and inference over these domains. Positive definite kernel functions allow us to quantitatively capture similarity between a pair of instances over these arbitrary domains. A poor choice of the kernel function, which decides the RKHS feature space, often results in poor performance. Automatic kernel selection methods have been developed, but have focused only on kernels on the input domain (i.e.’one-way’). In this work, we propose a novel and efficient algorithm for learning kernel functions simultaneously, on both input and output domains. We introduce the idea of learning polynomial kernel transformations, and call this method Simultaneous Twin Kernel Learning (STKL). STKL can learn arbitrary, but continuous kernel functions, including ’one-way’ kernel learning as a special case. We formulate this problem for learning covariances kernels of Twin Gaussian Processes. Our experimental evaluation using learned kernels on synthetic and several real-world datasets demonstrate consistent improvement in performance of TGP’s.Peer reviewe
