On a three-space property for Lindelöf Sigma-spaces, (WCG)-spaces and the Sobczyk property

[EN] Corson's example shows that there exists a Banach space EE which is not weakly normal but EE contains a closed subspace isomorphic to the Banach space C[0,1]C[0,1] and such that the quotient space E/C[0,1]E/C[0,1] is isomorphic to the weakly compactly generated Banach space c0[0,1]c0[0,1]. This applies to show the following two results: (i) The Lindelöf property is not a three-space property. (ii) The Lindelöf Σ-property is not a three-space property. In this note using the lifting property developed by Susanne Dierolf we present a very simple argument providing also (ii), see Theorem 1. This argument used in the proof applies also to show that under Continuum Hypothesis every infinite-dimensional topological vector space EE which contains a dense hyperplane admits a stronger vector topology υυ with the same topological dual and such that (E,υ)(E,υ) contains a dense non-Baire hyperplane. This partially answers a question of Saxon concerning Arias de Reyna-Valdivia-Saxon theorem. A Banach space EE has the Sobczyk Property if it contains an isomorphic copy of c0c0 and every such a copy is complemented in EE. The classical Sobczyk's theorem says that every separable Banach space has this property. We give an example of a C(K)C(K)-space EE and its subspace YY isometric to c0c0 such that E/YE/Y is isomorphic to c0(Γ)c0(Γ), with card(Γ)=2ℵ0card(Γ)=2ℵ0, yet YY is uncomplemented in EE. This complements Corson's example and shows that the Sobczyk Property (as well as the (WCG)-property, and the Separable Complementation Property) is not a~three-space property. In the last part we recall some facts (partially with a simpler presentation) concerning K-analytic, Lindelöf ΣΣ and analytic locally convex spaces. Additionally, a few remarks concerning weakly K-analytic spaces are includeThe first author has been partially supported by MEC and FEDER Project MTM2008-03211. Wolfgang Templin (born in 1948) was active in the democratic resistance in the former GDR. He co‑founded the party Bündnis 90 in reunified Germany and was writer and author of history books. In the conversation with Marek Zybura (born in 1957) —the Chair of History of Literature and Culture of Germany in the Willy Brandt Centre of German and European Studies at the University of Wroclaw—Templin discusses the origins of his Piłsudski biography (2022), which is being published in the Polish translation by Bellona in Warsaw

Opening sentences in Marek Krajewski’s novels

Opening sentences raise a lot of interest of both linguists and common Polish speakers. It is evident from numerous websites in which Internet users share their observations on the best opening sentences of books (most often novels), as well as theoretical papers and writing guides. The analysis of opening sentences of ten novels by Marek Krajewski (co-author of two of them being Mariusz Czubaj) is to provide an answer to the question to what extent the utterance opening of the texts of the Wroc³aw-based prose writer fulfill the requirements to be met by such type of constructions. It turns out that most crucial are syntactic and semantic features rather than lexical ones. The clash between theoretical assumptions and the M. Krajewski’s writing practice shows that opening sentences of his novels not always fall into classical determinants of incipient formulas. It also illustrates the thesis that a skillful writer does not need to cling to theoretical assumptions to create good opening sentences and novels translated into nearly twenty languages

Which Polish? What Neue? What Wilde? Provincialisation of the centre – centralisation of the province on the example of the Düsseldorf “Papers” by Marek Sobczyk and Jarosław Modzelewski

The starting point of the article are four paintings created jointly by Marek Sobczyk and Jaroslaw Modzelewski during their trip to Dusseldorf in autumn 1984 on a Solidarnosc scholarship, the so-called Papers. Both painters belonged to the Warsaw “Gruppa”, whose work was compared in Poland with German Neo-Expressionism. Their stay in Germany enabled them to make their own reconnaissance in the German artistic community and become familiar with the western conditions of art production and distribution, but in the same way it made their painting, which grew out of the local cultural and socio-political context, subject to a test of authenticity. Also not without significance for the cultural capital brought back to Poland was the destination itself – West Germany: a country with which relations, due to the historical past and the arrangement of political forces after the War, were multifold and complicated during the communist period. Inspired by the trip, the works both highlighted the consequences of the Cold War divisions and initiated in Polish art the process of transferring cultural content from West Germany, which was a brave step towards a way out of the space dominated by the politicized discourse of German-Polish relations after the War. Thus, Papers can serve to prompt a deepen reflection on the complexity of multiple relations: Poland–Germany, centre–periphery, East–West, while at the same time making it possible to problematize the issue of “originality” of phenomena in art that arise outside the main centres

The aim of the paper is to show how the same event – the trial and crucifixion of Jesus from Nazareth – can be seen from various points of view. The author analyzes selected works devoted to the trail of Jesus, written by prominent historians and lawyers, in searching for an answer to a question whether the different perspective of view, which is dependent on the profession of the writer, leads to a different establishment of historical truth and different assessment of that truth. Author takes into consideration opinions of writers about the credibility of the historical sources, especially Gospels, for reconstruction of the real course of the Jesus’ trial, the scope of competence of offices that run the trial, the content of the criminal charges and procedural errors. Author ’ s general conclusion is that the perspective of view is essential for the answer to the questions who is responsible for the Jesus’ crucifixion and how much one can trust the Gospels in this issue

On the Usefulness of Research into Roman Law – Some Reflections on the Joanna Kruszyńska – Kola’s Dissertation Ratio przedawnienia [The ratio of prescription] In this paper I present my personal opinion on the role of present-day research into the history of law, especially into Roman law, referring to the wider issue of the usefulness of Roman law in the future development of private law. I emphasize the clear deficit of communication between historians and proponents of modern law doctrine. This shortcoming is manifested in the lack of interest that lawyers tend to display in achievements in the field of legal history, and is proved more concretely by the fact that the references to the history in monographs on civil law are often only superficial and fragmentary. Unfortunately, legal historians rarely try to initiate any real dialogue with the practitioners of civil law doctrine. This approach offers a profound and compelling study, which both takes the present point of view into consideration and tackles many of the questions that are important and interesting today. I intend to indicate at least some basic issues that should be taken into consideration by legal historians who want to pique other lawyers’ interest in their works. In my opinion, the most important aspects are the choice of an attractive topic, that is not confined only to history; proper identification of the detailed issues, including such issues as are crucial and interesting today; and in-depth analysis of both current law and the discourse held in modern doctrine. It is significant to combine the appropriate historical methodology with the need for an attractive and communicative presentation of the research and its results. In her dissertation on the ratio of prescription Joanna Kruszyńska-Kola proposes an excellent method for improving communication with proponents of modern law doctrine. I am convinced that her work brings substance to the vision of research into the history of law which is described in my paper, for that reason I demonstrate how the author managed to achieve the purpose that legal historians should be pursuing
