Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The report of head of PUBP (Poviat Bureau of Public Security) in Augustów of 2nd July 1946 is an interesting document presenting a course of the so called People’s Referendum in Augustów Poviat as well as moods of the inhabitants and their attitude to new authorities. UB’s officials (Ministry of Public Security) were carefully observing the conduct of members of circuit commissions, local officials, chairs of village councils and priests in particular. They paid attention as to the fact whether they voted openly, without striking (which was encouraged), or whether they were “going behind a curtain” – which was treated as a manifestation of distrust to the authorities and a vote against. In the Augustów UB’s opinion, a test before election to Legislation Sejm, which the referendum was, did not go according to the expectations of the people’s authorities. The society resisted intimidation and did not play a role of a slow “voting machine”. Most members of circuit commissions tried to honestly fulfill their duties as well. That is why, before the election in January 1947, serious changes were made in the compositions of circuit commissions, some chairs of village councils and clerks in gminas were replaced, too. The document in publication comes from the Archives of the Institute of National Remembrance, Bialystok Branch. Aleksander Kuczyński, head of PUBP in Augustów, was its author. Original stylistics has been retained in the document, only obvious spelling mistakes and other errors which hindered the text’s legibility have been corrected.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Reikšminiai žodžiai: 1916-1917; Lenkijos kariuomenė; Lenkų-lietuvių santykiai; Lietuvių ir lenkų santykiai; Mobilizacija; Pirmasis pasaulinis karas, 1914-1918 (Didysis karas; World War I); Vaclovas Studnickis; Vilniaus klausimas; Vilniaus kraštas; Vilnius; 1916-1917; Great War; Lithuanian-Polish relations; Mobilization; Polish army; Polish-Lithuanian Relations; The First World War; Vilnius; Vilnius Region; Vilnius issue; WWI; Waclaw Studnicki; World War IIn autumn 1915, Vilnius and the region of Vilnius were occupied by Germans and the front stabilised along the line Riga – Daugpilis – Baranovičiai – Pinsk – Chernivtsi. The military administration was directly subject to the heads of the Eastern Front (General Paul Hindenburg). The economic and political situation in these regions was worse than in the Kingdom of Poland, and any contacts with the latter were strictly controlled. Germans supported Lithuanians and Belarusians thus aiming to weaken the Polish influence. On 5 November 1916, the declaration on the restoration of independent Poland was announced. The question on the dependence of these territories emerged. Polish activists initiated actions aimed at possible annexation to the new Poland. Germans started organising the so-called “Polish army” (Polnische Wehrmacht). Poles tried to initiate a campaign in eastern territories. Germans officially agreed with that. The published document reflects the circumstances and the process of voluntary support of the Poles in December 1916 and the first months of 1917. The author of the documents is a well-known political figure Wacław Gizbert-Studnicki, who had worked in Vilnius archives. He is considered a moderate nationalist who was an active figure in Poles activities in Vilnius. From autumn 1916 to spring 1917, he was the organiser and later the promoter of the Polish army. Seeking the above aims, he maintained relations with his brother Wladislaw and other politicians and military men in Warsaw. The published document was sent to Galicia to inform Polish politicians in Wien on the situation in Vilnius

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
