Sneha kalpana is an important dosage form of Ayurveda which is helpful in treating wide range of diseases. From the term "Snih" dhatu the word “Sneha” is derived. Sneha means fat or fatty material. From the root word ‘Krup Samarthye’, the word Kalpana is originated. It denotes specific procedures which help to convert a drug into medicament eg. Taila Kalpana and Ghrita Kalpana. Sneha kalpana is the pharmaceutical process where the fat and water-soluble active principles are extracted from the basic ingredients into sneha. Sneha is used in all modes of drug administration procedures, including Pana, Abhyanga, Bhojhana, Nasya, and Basti. There are several steps involved in the preparation of Sneha, including Poorva karma (the selection of Sneha and other dravya i.e., kalka dravya and drava dravya), pradhana karma (Sneha paka), and paschat karma (filtering of prepared sneha). Sneha Kalpana is a unique contribution of Ayurvedic science. It is a group of products containing mainly medicated Taila and Ghrita; along with Vasa and Majja, which can be used internally as well as externally. It is one of the widely used dosage forms in Ayurvedic drug industry and is said to achieve solubility of both fat soluble and water soluble extractives. It is absorbed easily, and is said to cross blood-brain-barrier. Acharyas have opined to carry out Sneha Murchhana to remove ‘Gandha’ and ‘Ama’ Doshas from the Sneha. Acharya Sharangdhara mentioned the shelf life (Saviryatavadhi) of various dosage forms. Amendments in Drugs and Cosmetics’ Act 1940 and Rules 1945, have redefined the shelf life, which is elaborated in this article

Though Acchapana is superior, Pravicharana Sneha is a versatile and patient-centric method of administering Sneha in Ayurveda. Unlike the rigid protocols of Acchapana Sneha, it adapts to individual needs with multiple routes of administration, including oral, topical, nasal, rectal, and vaginal. This flexibility ensures better compliance, especially for patients with weak digestion or aversion to direct Sneha consumption. Pravicharana Sneha is classified based on purpose, timing, and preparation. It encompasses dietary integrations like Odana, Vilepi and Mamsarasa, as well as external therapies like Abhyanga (massage) and Basti (enema). These diverse applications serve therapeutic goals such as nourishment, rejuvenation, and preparation for purification. Compared to Acchapana Sneha, Pravicharana offers greater palatability, dosage flexibility, and suitability for a broader demographic. While primarily aligned with Shamana (palliative) therapies, its adaptability extends to Shodhana (purificatory) procedures. Research highlights its efficacy in achieving Samyak Snigdha Lakshana with reduced dosage and duration, enhancing patient outcomes and minimizing complications. Pravicharana Sneha exemplifies Ayurveda’s holistic principles, bridging therapeutic and nutritional approaches. Its adaptability and wide applicability make it valuable for clinical and research advancements
