Scientific Presentations with L A T E X

No full text
Abstract In this article, we show how scientific presentations can be created based on the KOMA -Script document class scrartcl. The main advantage of the suggested approach is that the presentation slides allow for easy copyand-paste of content from other L A T E X documents such as research papers or handouts. Therefore, presentations slides are quickly generated, without the author having to learn how to use other L A T E X presentation packages. Additionally, in contrast to the rather overused templates of the more common presentation packages, the slides can be individually created and thus tailored to the topic of the presentation

Marius the Younger, son of a seven-time consul, was a Roman general and politician. Promoted by his father, he became one of the leaders of the Marian camp. His the most important achievement was the consulship held together with Gn. Papirius Carbo in 82 BC, and consequently taking command in the civil war against L. Cornelius Sulla. After the defeat, besieged in Praeneste, Marius committed suicide. The authors of the sources are very ambiguous in their assessment of the role that Marius the Younger played in the late Republic. Opponents criticize him for his incompetence as a commander, cruelty to enemies, and mock his young age, lack of experience and charisma. Supporters emphasize the extraordinary military skills, calmness and composure inherited from his father. Similar ambiguous opinions can be found in contemporary historiography. The author of the article critically re-reads the sources and objectively defines the role that Marius the Younger played in Republic in the eighties of the 1st century BC.Marius the Younger, son of a seven-time consul, was a Roman general and politician. In the project WERAN it is also aimed to determine the interaction of wind turbines (WT) with radar signals. The evaluate the strength of single a single WT reflecting radar transmissions, measurement campaigns with multicopters (UAS) have been carried out at various radar sites in the L (Air Defense), S (AD and ATC) and C band (Precipitation radar). The presentation focusses on radar echoes received at different UAS flight altitudes and distances to the scatterers. It is useful to analyse the radar return both in the time and frequency domain to detect static and time variant signal components. Some results will be shown and discussed. In the follow-up project WERAN plus there are some additional airborne vehicles in use to carry the measurement equipment. Some ideas of what can be expected from measurements at higher altitudes and moving at horizontal speed will be shared

Political refugees from Italy during the First Civil War and the dictatorship of L. Cornelius Sulla (88–79 BC) During the First Civil War, political emigration occurred in Rome. The author of the paper distinguishes three stages of this emigration. The first concerns the period immediately after the outbreak of the First Civil War in 88 BC. At that time, a small group of refugees escaping Sullan repression reached Spain and Africa. The second stage involved the persecution that broke out in Rome after the victory of Cinna and Marius. In this case, emigration concerned a much wider population. First, refugees fled to the East to join Sulla, but they also sought out asylum in other parts of the Republic, for example in Spain or Africa. The third stage of emigration followed the victory of L. Cornelius Sulla in the First Civil War in Italy and the introduction of proscription (82 BC). Spain became the main destination for refugees, and their number was so great that they established their own center of power, organized armed forces, and resisted Sullan troops for several years. In the paper, the author presents the reasons emigrants had for leaving Italy, the scale of the phenomenon, the main directions and circumstances of emigration, its nature as well as the actions undertaken by refugees to return to Italy

Numénius a-t-il commenté le Parménide ? Troisième partie : Retour sur les sources de “l’exposé commun” (Numénius, le Commentaire anonyme au Parménide, l’Apocalypse de Zostrien et Marius Victorinus)

International audienceDid Numenius comment on the Parmenides ?If, as a Platonist of his time, Numenius used the Timaeus and the Politeia both to elaborate and support his thoughts on Metaphysics and Cosmology, it is now usual to think that he also used the Parmenides in his description of the first principle and it could be tempting to believe that by doing so he identified this first principle with the One. However, on close examination, his work gives but few clues to bear out such a possibility. In spite of these conclusions, the hypothesis subsists for reasons that depend essentially on the History of Philosophy and on the researches it produces. It is indeed often taken up again for three reasons, presented as corollaries: the status of Numenius himself as a Pythagorean Platonist, a predecessor of Plotinus; the real affinities between his thought and the doctrine of The Anonymous Commentary on the Parmenides; the parallels also seen between his phrases and the ones from the supposedly common source to the Zostrianus and the Against Arius by Marius Victorinus, a source presented as really close to the Anonymous Commentary. In other words, the three reasons put forward originate less in the study of Numenius’ work itself than in the research on the sources of other texts whose authors and origins are not well defined, a research based partly on the links of this work with its supposed “peers” in Pythagoreanism. Third part: Reconsidering the sources of the “exposé commun” (Numenius, The Anonymous Commentary on the Parmenides, the Zostrianus and Marius Victorinus)This third part of the study presents the last episode of the research on the potential relation between Numenius and the Parmenides. The first part has shown that Numenius’ transmitted work does not bear any trace of the use of this dialogue in the elaboration of the doctrine about the first two principles; the second part has tried to prove that Numenius, in all likelihood, is not the author of The Anonymous Commentary on the Parmenides. The paper deals here with what Michel Tardieu (1996) called “l’exposé commun”, the discourse common to the Zostrianus and the Against Arius by Marius Victorinus. The obvious parallels between this discourse and The Anonymous Commentary on the Parmenides and also with some phrases by Numenius suggested that the latter was its source, a view sometimes used to support the hypothesis that he really was after all the author of the Commentary. Here again, the detailed examination of the texts and their confrontation reveal the weakness of this double conclusion. Re-examining the source of the discourse, in reality partly common to the Coptic Zostrianus and Marius Victorinus, shows however that Numenius has certainly been used for its elaboration and that he could consequently have been used as a source by the Gnostics, as well as by the Neoplatonists, and thus sometimes, indirectly or a contrario, for their interpretation of the Parmenides.

On the L p-Poisson Semigroup Associated with Elliptic Systems

We study the infinitesimal generator of the Poisson semigroup in L associated with homogeneous, second-order, strongly elliptic systems with constant complex coefficients in the upper-half space, which is proved to be the Dirichlet-to-Normal mapping in this setting. Also, its domain is identified as the linear subspace of the L-based Sobolev space of order one on the boundary of the upper-half space consisting of functions for which the Regularity problem is solvable. Moreover, for a class of systems containing the Lamé system, as well as all second-order, scalar elliptic operators, with constant complex coefficients, the action of the infinitesimal generator is explicitly described in terms of singular integral operators whose kernels involve first-order derivatives of the canonical fundamental solution of the given system. Furthermore, arbitrary powers of the infinitesimal generator of the said Poisson semigroup are also described in terms of higher order Sobolev spaces and a higher order Regularity problem for the system in question. Finally, we indicate how our techniques may be adapted to treat the case of higher order systems in graph Lipschitz domains. The first author acknowledges financial support from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, through the “Severo Ochoa Programme for Centres of Excellence in R&D” (SEV-2015-0554). Exploring difficult-to-manage axial spondyloarthritis:Results from a Dutch clinical practice registry

Objectives: To explore (1) the prevalence of difficult-to-manage axial spondyloarthritis (D2M axSpA) in clinical practice according to the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society (ASAS) definition, (2) specific components of this definition contributing most to its fulfilment and (3) associated patient characteristics. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the SpA-Net registry. Fulfilling the ASAS definition required: (1) treatment failure, (2) insufficient disease control (any of: [A] high disease activity (AxSpA Disease Activity Score [ASDAS] ≥2.1), [B] signs of active disease (e.g. peripheral manifestations) or [C] reduced health-related quality of life) and (3) a problematic management situation in the patient’s or rheumatologist’s perspective. Three variations of the ASAS definition were investigated, including only subcriterion A, B or C in domain 2. Treatment-refractory axSpA required fulfilment of the primary ASAS definition, an ASDAS ≥2.1 and CRP ≥5 mg/L. The prevalence of D2M axSpA per explored definition was calculated, and associated characteristics were assessed using logistic regression analyses. Results: Data from 263 patients were analysed. Overall, 9.7% had D2M axSpA (variations A–C: 3.6–8.7%) and 1.7% had treatment-refractory disease. ‘Treatment failure’ affected 9.9–11.6% of patients, ‘insufficient disease control’ affected 79.7% of patients (variation A: 57.0%, B: 44.6%, C: 51.4%) and ‘problematic management’ affected 51.4–60.2% of patients. Current smoking (OR = 3.1 [95% CI 1.1–8.7]) and a history of psoriasis (OR = 2.8 [95% CI 1.0–7.6]) were associated characteristics. Conclusion: One in 10 patients with axSpA have D2M disease. Patient-reported outcomes contribute importantly to the classification of D2M axSpA. Current smoking and a history of psoriasis are associated characteristics.</p

Commentary on The Swedish Copyright Act (1877)

<p>For most of the 19th century Swedish copyright law was primarily regulated by the Freedom of the Press Ordinance of 1812, which merely stated that ‘Any writing is the property of the author or its legal proprietor’. It was not until 1877 that Sweden passed a separate, comprehensive copyright law. This was initially motivated by the fact that copyright was becoming much too extensive and complicated an issue to be regulated in a constitutional law. Apart from addressing many of the practicalities surrounding the exchange and sale of literary rights, the 1877 Copyright Act also introduced two important novelties in Swedish copyright law. First, it imposed a fixed time limitation on the protection of copyright; while the previous law had, in practice, allowed for an eternal extension of copyright protection, the new act limited this to 50 years after the death of the author. Secondly, the 1877 Copyright Act provided a certain, although very limited, copyright protection for translated works stating that original authors retained their copyright for works translated from Swedish into Norwegian or Danish. This was the most controversial part of the new law as many publishers saw this as a limitation of what they thought of as their ‘freedom to translate’ which, they argued, could limit public access to literature.</p&gt

The quantities of sewage sludge generated in the treatment plants already pose serious problems related to its storage and use. The Article 14 of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC specifies, “Sewage sludge from waste water treatment shall be re-used whenever appropriate. Disposal routes shall minimize the adverse effects on the environment “. Therefore, priority is given to the reuse of sewage sludge, rather than disposal it to landfills or storage plants. The analysis of scientific literature related to the quantities of sewage sludge and its chemical composition, possibilities of its use in thermal process and possibilities of residual product use in other areas as a raw material was carried out by the author of dissertation. Sewage sludge samples were collected from the major water treatment systems in Lithuania during the preparation of dissertation. After investigation of their chemical quality, author selected sewage sludge samples from a small city (Šilutė) for a more detailed research. Author designed and constructed a pyrolysis stand where he carried out thermal decomposition (pyrolysis) of sewage sludge. Solid fraction as char obtained from sewage sludge was used in experimental research on cultivation of fibre hemp (Canabis sativa L.). In order to assess the regularities of distribution of heavy metals, alkaline earth metals and alkaline metals as well as of non-metals the author carried out chemical analysis of sewage sludge, sludge pyrolysis products and gifferent parts of fibre hemp (roots, stem, leaves). According to the results author found distribution of elemental migration in the course of the application of the principle of sustainable use of sewage sludge
