Stakeholder preferences regarding sustainable aviation fuel technologies: Stakeholders’ preferences regarding different SAF technology pathways, in order to comply with the proposed SAF blending mandate by the European Commission
The airline industry is growing and so are its emissions. To diminish the airline industry's increasing emissions, carbon-neutral growth for this industry is adopted. Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are considered an important aspect to comply with these goals and a large upscale of the SAF industry is needed. Therefore, the European Commission recently proposed a SAF blending mandate which mandates the uptake of this industry. However, the SAF industry is still a relatively new phenomenon and faces multiple barriers of which one of which is the divergent perspectives of the stakeholder groups within the airline industry. This research aims to identify the preferences of these different stakeholder groups. The following research question has been formulated for this purpose: "What are stakeholders’ preferences regarding different SAF technology pathways, in order to stimulate the SAF upscale for 2030 and comply with the proposed SAF blending mandate by the European Commission?" To answer this research question, a qualitative approach is applied. As such, a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach is used, where the Bayesian Best-Worst Method (BWM) is applied to determine the stakeholder group preferences regarding different SAF technology pathways. These SAF technology pathways are scored on economic, environmental and technological criteria. The stakeholder analysis shows that the airline industry deviates from the other three stakeholder groups (SAF/aviation experts, SAF consumers and SAF producers) as this stakeholder group attains more value to SAF its economic performance, combined with a decreased importance of both its environmental performance and technological performance. It is also concluded that overall, SAF its performance on greenhouse gas (GHG) saving emissions and its production volume availability and scalability are both deemed critical for a SAF technology pathway. Also, the expected minimum selling price is an important criterion in the analysis. Given the considered criteria and their perceived importance, regardless of which perspective of the stakeholder group is considered, the Fischer-Tropsch technology performs well due to its good performance on environmental aspects and its high production volume availability and scalability. As this research shows the divergent perspectives within the SAF industry, future policies could focus on finding consensus between these stakeholder groups.Engineering and Policy Analysi
Rough faults, distributed weakening, and off-fault deformation
We report systematic spatial variations in fault rocks along nonplanar strike-slip faults cross-cutting the Lake Edison Granodiorite, Sierra Nevada, California (Sierran wavy fault) and Lobbia outcrops of the Adamello Batholith in the Italian Alps (Lobbia wavy fault). In the case of the Sierran fault, pseudotachylyte formed at contractional fault bends, where it is found as thin (1-2 mm) fault-parallel veins. Epidote and chlorite developed in the same seismic context as the pseudotachylyte and are especially abundant in extensional fault bends. We argue that the presence of fluids, as illustrated by this example, does not necessarily preclude the development of frictional melt. In the case of the Lobbia fault, pseudotachylyte thickness varies along the length of the fault, but the pseudotachylyte veins thicken and pool in extensional bends. We conduct a quantitative analysis of fault roughness, microcrack distribution, stress, and friction along the Lobbia fault. Numerical modeling results show that opening in extensional bends and localized thermal weakening in contractional bends counteract resistance encountered by fault waviness, resulting in an overall weaker fault than suggested by the corresponding static friction coefficient. The models also predict static stress redistribution around bends in the faults which is consistent with distribution of microcracks, indicating significant elastic and inelastic strain energy is dissipated into the wall rocks due to nonplanar fault geometry. Together these observations suggest that damage and energy dissipation occurs along the entire nonplanar fault during slip, rather than being confined to the region close to the dynamically propagating crack tip
Diagnosis of Challenges and Uncertainties for Implementation of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Colombia, and Recommendations to Move Forward
This article reviews the current scenario and the main uncertainties and challenges associated with implementing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Colombia, from which it determines the possible certified technologies under the ASTM D 7566 standard as well as co-processing technologies contemplated within the ASTM D 1655 standard, more suitable for the implementation of SAF production. Likewise, through the PESTEL tool (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental, and Legal), a diagnosis is made in order to obtain an updated overview of the implementation of SAF in Colombia. Based on the above, it provides recommendations to mitigate the uncertaintiesidentified, and it is complemented by the ECOCANVAS tool, which applies to businesses related to the circular economy, and also include the net production potential of SAF in Colombia, considering the production of feedstock, in agricultural residue of sugarcane, oil palm, corn, and coffee. Thisstudy concludes with some policy recommendations that can make SAF implementation viable and allow responsible institutions to organize themselves for better strategic action and identify the fields of research and the need for investment in R + D + i to strengthen the supply chain.BT/Biotechnology and Societ
Ultrasensitive quantification of circulating disease biomarkers through enzymatic labeling and single molecule counting
The focus of my graduate research is on the development of simplified and ultrasensitive methods for quantifying low abundance biomarkers with the ultimate goal of developing robust tools for advancing disease diagnosis. In recent years there has been an immense expansion in the identification of sensitive and specific indicators of disease. As our understanding of these biochemical parameters continues to advance, the ability to quantify low abundance biomarkers from small samples sizes has become increasingly important to continue expanding the range of available disease indicators. Further, as medical diagnostics continues to transition to point-of-care testing, the development of simplified protocols capable of producing rapid results has been a main element limiting the development of portable devices. Together, each of these factors will play a critical role in the analysis of clinical samples for the purpose of providing more robust diagnostic and prognostic information to patients suffering from diseases ranging from infectious disease to cancer, metabolic, autoimmune, and gastrointestinal disorders. This thesis focuses on two independent projects which aim to address these limitations through the design of improved methods for the quantification of microRNA (miRNA) and protein in biological fluids.
The first of my projects relates to the ultrasensitive detection of miRNA, one of the most exciting emerging classes of biomarkers. In recent years, miRNA in blood circulating have been identified as robust indicators of a variety of diseases. Despite extensive research into the potential impact of miRNAs as clinical indicators, state of the art methods remain dependent on incredibly complex and time consuming techniques. Together, these limitations have been main factors extending research timelines and precluding the development of POC assays. Main factors contributing to the complexity of existing tests include the dependence on reverse transcriptase, DNA ligase, and PCR steps, each of which necessitate time consuming reagent handling as well as 1-2 h incubations.
To addresses these issues, my research has focused on the development of an efficient RNA amplification technique which uses enzymatic chemical labeling to generate densely labeled double stranded products that are then labeled with fluorescent probes. Individual molecules are then directly counted using total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy, as opposed to conventional indirect methods using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This technology provides a fundamental framework for the development of an ultrasensitive miRNA detection method which allows for the absolute and direct quantification of miRNAs in clinical samples. This thesis demonstrates enzymatic labeling of miRNA with fluorescent probes as well as the optimization of surface attachment and probe labeling methods. Ultimately this research concludes with the successful detection of labeled miRNA, establishing a framework for advancing the sensitivity of this method toward the fundamental level of digital single molecule counting.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2019-08-01The student, Lucas Smith, accepted the attached license on 2017-05-25 at 11:06.The student, Lucas Smith, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2017-05-25 at 11:35.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2017-05-26 at 13:18.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #11179 on 2017-09-29 at 11:13:19Made available in DSpace on 2017-09-29T16:39:04Z (GMT).
Health disparities, environmental toxicants, and midlife women’s health outcomes
Health disparities and increased exposures to environmental toxicants continue to persist in some of the most vulnerable populations including women from racial and minority groups and older populations. Women from urban areas of developed countries tend to carry the heaviest burdens of both occupational, environmental, and social stress thus causing cascading biological changes that can affect reproductive capabilities. Midlife, which is the period between the ages of 40-59, presents major gaps in reproductive and menopausal research and thus understanding health disparities and exposures to environmental toxicants in this population is of great public health concern. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand and evaluate racial and socioeconomic differences in quality of life and phthalate exposure in midlife women.
Approaching this issue is three-fold; first ordinal logistic regressions were applied to the Midlife Women’s Health Study (MWHS) to understand the relationship between health, demographic, and lifestyle factors on quality of life between racial and minority groups at midlife. Secondly, to understand phthalate exposure and its associations with fibroids and body mass index at menopause, three statistical methods for phthalate mixture analysis were conducted. We evaluated and compared the predictive capabilities of principal component regression, weighted quantile sum regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression for both continuous and binomial outcome variables. Last, mediation analysis was conducted in the MWHS to understand racial and socioeconomic differences in the associations of phthalate exposure and hot flashes.
This work illustrates racial differences in both QoL and phthalate exposure exists and further studies are needed to address both individual and systemic risk factors.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2023-08-01The student, Brandi Smith, accepted the attached license on 2021-07-05 at 00:06.The student, Brandi Smith, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2021-07-05 at 00:18.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2021-07-07 at 09:56.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #16755 on 2022-01-12 at 12:52:52Made available in DSpace on 2022-01-12T22:34:51Z (GMT). Motivation and skill acquisition in an online amateur multimedia community: a case study
Both the amount of multimedia content and the venues for sharing such content have been steadily increasing, yet not much is known about what motivated, inspired, and helped the content creators to create their artifacts. Using participant observation, web content analysis, and interviews, this case study focuses on one online amateur multimedia community and the animators therein. In particular, it addresses questions concerning 1) one’s motivation to join and create animations in that community, and 2) how one acquires the skills necessary to create animations and participate in the community. Having a better understanding of motivation and skill acquisition in this informal, online setting can provide insight on ways to improve and support the learning processes and environments in other online communities, more formal arenas like classrooms and workplaces, and in other informal settings such as structured after-school programs.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Equivariant E-infinity algebras
The equivariant ∞G operad has the property that ∞G(n) is the total space for the G-equivariant universal principal Σn bundle. There is a forgetful functor from ∞G-algebras to ∞-algebras, where ∞ is the classic ∞ operad. This functor admits a homotopical right adjoint R. The goal of this thesis is to understand R by expressing the free ∞G-algebra on a G-space X as a homotopy colimit of classic ∞ algebras.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2019-12-01The student, Mychael Smith, accepted the attached license on 2017-11-27 at 11:33.The student, Mychael Smith, submitted this Dissertation for approval on 2017-11-27 at 11:40.This Dissertation was approved for publication on 2017-11-28 at 12:43.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #11758 on 2018-03-13 at 09:55:53Made available in DSpace on 2018-03-13T15:25:12Z (GMT).
