Terahertz Emission from (100) p-InA
Terahertz emission from (100) p-type InAs illuminated by ultrafast near-infrared pulses is investigated. A two-fold rotational symmetry was observed when rotated about the surface normal. A quadratic relationship was found for the emission dependence on optical pump power. These suggest the presence of photo-carrier transport and optical rectification mechanisms. The InAs emission was found to exceed that of a blackbody radiator for frequencies below 1 THz for nominal input power levels. The generated power was found to be roughly two orders of magnitude greater than a 1mm ZnTe emitter

Abstract : In this study, I conduct a terminological analysis and propose definitions in Brazilian Portuguese and equivalents in English of terms of a terminological subset of Plant Morphology and insert them in online platform of terminology management e-Termos (2009). This subset ? plant life forms - was proposed from the organography of Gonçalves and Lorenzi (2007) and the terms were analysed in the corpus (SMITH, 1913; RAVEN et al., 2005, 2007; JUDD et al., 2008, 2009). The entries, as they will be treated in this research proposal, are characterised as 'monolingual with equivalences' by Cabré (1999), and the languages involved are Brazilian Portuguese and English. Even though this proposal deals with few terms and is limited to the proposition of entries, it is justified by the lack of reference material of Plant Morphology in this language pair - relevant to botanists, researchers and undergraduate students as well as translators of texts of this area. Hence the importance of this methodological and theoretical model, that may serve to the compilation of a bilingual glossary of this area in a future moment. This is an interdisciplinary study since it involves Terminology, Translation and Botany. Within Terminology, it is theoretically and methodologically aligned with the Communicative Theory of Terminology (CTT). In this research proposal, the terms from two classification systems of plant life forms were included. Through the analysis of this set of terms in the corpus, bibliographic and terminological records were developed and entries containing definitions in Brazilian Portuguese, equivalents in English, illustrations and other relevant data were proposed for each term

Weathering microenvironments on feldspar surfaces: implications for understanding fluid-mineral reactions in soils
The mechanisms by which coatings develop on weathered grain surfaces, and their potential impact on rates of fluid-mineral interaction, have been investigated by examining feldspars from a 1.1 ky old soil in the Glen Feshie chronosequence, Scottish highlands. Using the focused ion beam technique, electron-transparent foils for characterization by transmission electron microscopy were cut from selected parts of grain surfaces. Some parts were bare whereas others had accumulations, a few micrometres thick, of weathering products, often mixed with mineral and microbial debris. Feldspar exposed at bare grain surfaces is crystalline throughout and so there is no evidence for the presence of the amorphous 'leached layers' that typically form in acid-dissolution experiments and have been described from some natural weathering contexts. The weathering products comprise sub-μm thick crystallites of an Fe-K aluminosilicate, probably smectite, that have grown within an amorphous and probably organic-rich matrix. There is also evidence for crystallization of clays having been mediated by fungal hyphae. Coatings formed within Glen Feshie soils after ∼1.1 ky are insufficiently continuous or impermeable to slow rates of fluid-feldspar reactions, but provide valuable insights into the complex weathering microenvironments on debris and microbe-covered mineral surfaces

A descriptive study measuring the differences between gender, perception of alcohol abuse on college campuses, importance of religion and grade point average of African-American college students, 1994
The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between alcohol consumption and gender, grade point average, importance of religion, and perception of alcohol problems on campus. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to sixty-six students. This research found no significant difference in the MAST scores between individuals in the areas of grade-point average, perception of alcohol abuse on campus, and gender. However, a significant difference was found in MAST scores between individuals who reported their religion as being very important or moderately/not important in their lives
Resonant Spaces: Electroacoustic Music and Ritual: A commentary on my recent music.
The following portfolio and commentary concerns music and performance works created between 2008 and 2012, and an exposition of the research, ideas, aesthetics and techniques that connect
these works. I will discuss in detail the role that archaeoacoustics has played in my composition of fixed and mixed media works and how it has influenced me aesthetically in my approach to live performance. I will also explain in each instance any actual data used from various research sources, and my metaphorical interpretation of various archaeological sites and acoustic phenomena. Similarly, I will discuss the concepts of shamanism, ritual and transcendence that have influenced me, and how these concepts are expressed in my instrumental works, fixed media and live performance pieces
