Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textSamenvattend kan worden gesteld dat het plangebied gesitueerd is buiten de oude dorpskern van Heille. Volgens de geologische kaart is het plangebied gelegen op de flank van een dekzandrug behorende tot het Laagpakket van Wierden waarbij zich een dunne laag veen heeft ontwikkeld. Op het veen zijn lagen afgezet die behoren tot het Laagpakket van Walcheren. De geomorfologische kaart plaatst het plangebied echter volledig op de dekzandrug, maar met plaatselijke afgravingen. Analyse van de AHN toont aan dat het plangebied gelegen is op de dekzandrug, maar lager dan de omringende percelen (circa 0.70 meter lager). Dit kan wijzen op afgravingen. Binnen het plangebied zijn geen vondstmeldingen of waarnemingen bekend volgens Archis. Aan de hand van de analyse van oude kaarten en historische bronnen blijkt dat het plangebied pas aan het einde van de 20ste eeuw werd bebouwd. Uit de resultaten van het booronderzoek blijkt dat het plangebied geen intact bodemprofiel bevat. In alle boringen, met uitzondering van boring 3, is een opgebrachte of vergraven laag aanwezig onder de bouwvoor. Onder deze laag bevindt zich pleistoceen dekzand behorende tot het Laagpakket van Wierden vanaf minimaal 0.70 meter beneden maaiveld (circa 0.56 meter +NAP). In de boringen en bij de veldkartering zijn geen archeologische indicatoren aangetroffen die kunnen wijzen op de aanwezigheid van archeologische vindplaatsen. Tijdens het booronderzoek is bevestigd dat het plangebied beduidend lager is gelegen dan de omringende terreinen
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Notes on the Margins of Metadata; Concerning the Undecidability of the Digital Image
No full textThis paper considers the significance of metadata in relation to the image economy of the web. Social practices such as keywording, tagging, rating and viewing increasingly influence the modes of navigation and hence the utility of images in online environments. To a user faced with an avalanche of images, metadata promises to make photographs machine-readable in order to mobilize new knowledge, in a continuation of the archival paradigm. At the same time, metadata enables new topologies of the image, new temporalities and multiplicities which present a challenge to historical models of representation. As photography becomes an encoded discourse, we suggest that the turning away from the visual towards the mathematical and the algorithmic establishes undecidability as a key property of the networked image
Returns for Entrepreneurs vs. Employees: The Effect of Education and Personal Control on the Relative Performance of Entrepreneurs vs. Wage Employees
No full textHow valuable is education for entrepreneurs' performance as compared to employees'? What might explain any differences? And does education affect peoples' occupational choices accordingly? We answer these questions based on a large panel of US labor force participants. We show that education affects peoples' decisions to become an entrepreneur negatively. We show furthermore that entrepreneurs have higher returns to education than employees (in terms of the comparable performance measure 'income'). This is the case even when estimating individual fixed effects of the differential returns to education for spells in entrepreneurship versus wage employment, thereby accounting for selectivity into entrepreneurial positions based on fixed individual characteristics. We find these results irrespective of whether we control for general ability and/or whether we use instrumental variables to cope with the endogenous nature of education in income equations. Finally, we find (indirect) support for the argument that the higher returns to education for entrepreneurs is due to fewer (organizational) constraints faced by entrepreneurs when optimizing the profitable employment of their education. Factors influencing wind energy curtailment
No full textNonphysically firm wind generation connections (i.e., those to which curtailment can apply) may be necessary for significant wind integration to congested transmission networks. A study of factors influencing this associated wind energy curtailment is, therefore, of timely importance. In this paper, the wind curtailment estimation effects of natural inter-yearly wind profile variability, system demand-profile/fuel-price parameter uncertainty, and minimum system inertial constraints are studied in detail. Results indicate that curtailment estimation error can be reduced by appropriate wind data year-length and sampling-rate choice, though a pragmatic consideration of system parameter uncertainty should be maintained. Congestion-related wind energy curtailment risk due to such parameter uncertainty exhibits appreciable interlocational dependency, suggesting there may be scope for effective curtailment risk management. The coincidence of wind energy curtailment estimated due to network thermal congestion and system wide inertial-stability issues also has commercial significance for systems with very high wind energy penetration targets, suggesting there may be appreciable interaction between different sources of curtailment in realityScience Foundation IrelandCharles Parsons Energy Research AwardsCharles Parson
