Flexural Strength of a Pit and Fissure Sealant Containing Microcapsules
Caries at the interface of dental materials and mineralized tooth structure continues to be a significant issue in oral healthcare. A new approach to fight tooth decay incorporates microcapsules into dental materials that release remineralizing agents. The objective of this study was to study the effect that microcapsules have on the flexural strength of pit and fissure sealant formulations. Pit and fissure sealants that contained microcapsules were incorporated into formulations at 5 w/w% of microcapsules (2 w/w% of 5.0 M Ca(NO3)2; 2 w/w% of 0.8 M NaF; 1 w/w% of 3.0 M K2HPO4) were added to pit and fissure sealant formulations. In this study, bisGMA, UDMA and UMMA were explored as the toughening monomers. TEGMA was always the diluent monomer. The ratio of “toughening monomer:diluent monomer” was explored over a range of 4:1 through 1:1. Barium boroaluminosilicate glass was loaded over a range of 3-60 w/w%, fumed silica was loaded over a range of 0.1-3.0 w/w%. The potential number of formulations exploring these variables is substantial. Therefore, a range of formulations was tested that explored these formulation variables. These four variables were simultaneously varied in order to gain a better understanding of the role of these ingredients in the presence of microcapsules on flexural strength. The flexural strength was looked at as a function of each variable individually, and then as a function of multiple variables.ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optionvii, 38 page
Latest Results from NA48 and NA48/1 M. W. SLATER
Introduction The NA48 experiment was originally designed to measure the CP violation parameter Re( ) via a high statistics comparison of K S # ## and KL # ## decays. A beamline consisting of simultaneous K S and KL beams was used, with a tagging system allowing discrimination between the two types of kaon. Rare KL decay and precision measurements could be carried out in parallel. In 2002, for the NA48/1 phase of the experiment, the KL beam was removed and the proton intensity on the K S target was increased by a factor # 1000, allowing very rare K S and hyperon decay searches to be pursued. The kaon beams were produced using 400 GeV/c protons provided by the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN, incident on two separate beryllium targets. The NA48 detector consisted of the following principal sub-detectors: a magnetic spectrometer consisting of 4 drift chambers separated by a dipole magnet, a high resolution liquid krypton electromagnetic calorimeter, an iron scintillator hadro

Perspektywy rozwoju biotechnologii w Polsce
Biotechnology uses biological processes in the development of technology or manufacture of a product. It is forecasted that Polish biotechnology industry will exceed very quickly. The technology and science parks in Poland have invested millions Euros to build new laboratories. Polish market is fuelled by increased R&D funding, central and regional governments initiatives. The article on “Polish perspectives of biotechnology development” identifies significant factors for biotechnology project development. It also indicates the examples of government biotechnology initiatives in the world. The author focuses on the statistical analysis of the research and development projects conducted by Polish scientist in scientific laboratories. His main conclusion is that biotechnology will be very important in developing Poland, Polish universities, research and development organizations.Udostępnienie publikacji Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego finansowane w ramach projektu „Doskonałość naukowa kluczem do doskonałości kształcenia”. Full Body Acting Rehearsal in a Networked Virtual Environment-A Case Study
In order to rehearse for a play or a scene from a movie, it is generally required that the actors are physically present at the same time in the same place. In this paper we present an example and experience of a full body motion shared virtual environment (SVE) for rehearsal. The system allows actors and directors to meet in an SVE in order to rehearse scenes for a play or a movie, that is, to perform some dialogue and blocking (positions, movements, and displacements of actors in the scene) rehearsal through a full body interactive virtual reality (VR) system. The system combines immersive VR rendering techniques as well as network capabilities together with full body tracking. Two actors and a director rehearsed from separate locations. One actor and the director were in London (located in separate rooms) while the second actor was in Barcelona. The Barcelona actor used a wide field-of-view head-tracked head-mounted display, and wore a body suit for real-time motion capture and display. The London actor was in a Cave system, with head and partial body tracking. Each actor was presented to the other as an avatar in the shared virtual environment, and the director could see the whole scenario on a desktop display, and intervene by voice commands. A video stream in a window displayed in the virtual environment also represented the director. The London participant was a professional actor, who afterward commented on the utility of the system for acting rehearsal. It was concluded that full body tracking and corresponding real-time display of all the actors' movements would be a critical requirement, and that blocking was possible down to the level of detail of gestures. Details of the implementation, actors, and director experiences are provided
Fluoride, Calcium, and Phosphate Ion Release From Ion Permeable Microcapsules Incorporated Into A Two-Part Orthodontic Adhesive System
This study examines the ion release rate from polyurethane based microcapsules formulated into orthodontic cement. The release of fluoride, calcium and phosphate ions promotes remineralization in the oral environment. Ion permeable microcapsules containing bioavailable fluoride, calcium, and phosphate aqueous salt solutions were formulated into both the primer and paste of the Dentsply® NeoBond© orthodontic adhesive system. The microcapsules were incorporated into both parts of the system to investigate the effect the continuous phase had on ion release. Furthermore, formulations were varied with both microcapsule identity, and w/w percentage loading of microcapsules. This was done to investigate the effect that the presence of multiple ions has on the apparent release rate. The objective of this research was to validate and quantify the release of bioavailable ions, in hopes of the development of a remineralizing orthodontic adhesive with the capability to combat white spot lesion development. The results of this study support that sustained release of fluoride, calcium, and phosphate from ion permeable microcapsules is achievable from both the primer and paste. An orthodontic adhesive with these capabilities could potentially stop the demineralization process and promote the remineralization process.ProQuest Traditional Publishing Optionvi, 73 page
