Application of palynological data to the chronology of the Palaeogene lava fields of the British Province: implications for magmatic stratigraphy

    No full text
New high-precision ages, determined from palynomorph assemblages within intercalated sedimentary deposits, are presented for the Palaeogene lava fields (Skye, Mull and Antrim) of the British Province. These data reveal very rapid averaged eruption rates (1 m/200 yr) and the non-synchronous formation of the lava fields. Eruption of the volumetrically dominant transitional to mildly alkaline lavas of the Skye (58.25-58.0 Ma) and Mull (post 55 Ma) lava fields is separated by the eruption of the MORB-like Preshal More flows of olivine tholeiite found at the top of the preserved sequence on Skye and at the base of the Mull Lava Field. The Lower Formation of the Antrim Lava Field correlates with the Skye Lava Field and the Upper Formation correlates with the Preshal More flows. The new ages indicate that the eruption of the Preshal More flows was synchronous with the main ocean floor spreading event which occurred 500 km to the NW, at c. 55 Ma, during Chron 24r. A combined thinspot and channelized plume model may best explain the temporal and spatial distributions of the lava fields and associated subvolcanic complexes of the British Province

    William H. Simpson: general's general

    No full text
Foundations for the careers of great men are often laid in early life. This paper deals with events in the first 21 years, of the life of William H. Simpson who later commanded the 350,000 man Ninth Army as it raced across Germany in the Second World War. The development of the West Texas county in which General Simpson was raised; the General's early life as well as his West Point days, during which the tall Texan was shaped into a second lieutenant in the United States Army, are examined. An annotated bibliography including letters written to and interviews conducted by the author as well as printed material supplements the text

Organic structure determination using 2-D NMR spectroscopy : a problem-based approach / Jeffrey H. Simpson.

pharmacy bookfair2015Includes bibliographical references and index.xvi, 574 pages :"The second edition of this book comes with a number of new figures, passages, and problems. Increasing the number of figures from 290 to 448 has necessarily added considerable length, weight, and, expense. It is my hope that the book has not lost any of its readability and accessibility. I firmly believe that most of the concepts needed to learn organic structure determination using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy do not require an extensive mathematical background. It is my hope that the manner in which the material contained in this book is presented both reflects and validates this belief"-- Provided by publisher

Kanter Revisited: Gender, Power and (In)visibility

    No full text
This paper revisits Kanter's (1977) seminal work Men and Women of the Corporation, rereading her account of numerical advantage and disadvantage through a poststructuralist lens which exposes hidden dimensions of gendered power. This lens is captured in the ‘(In)visibility Vortex’ (Lewis and Simpson, 2010) which highlights struggles and tensions around the norm through processes of preservation and concealment within the norm as well as dynamics of revealing, exposure and disappearance as features of the margins. The study draws on developments in feminist theorizing, specially around visibility, invisibility and power, to facilitate this rereading. In so doing, the author demonstrate that while Kanter retreated from explanations based on the gendering of organizations or from recognition of gendered power, these dynamics can be identified in her text. The authors suggest that rereading classic texts can surface dimensions of organizations that have contemporary significance and can inform future research

Biological data from post mortem analysis of otters in Hungary

    No full text
In this paper we examined the characteristics of reproduction parameters, stomach content and inner organ weights on carcasses (male, n=67, female n=57, unknown n=3) of otters (Lutra lutra) collected in Hungary between 1999 and 2006. Most otter carcasses (90.6%) were collected as road casualties. In breeding females (n=28), the mean (±SE) number of placental scars was 2.22±0.17. One female was pregnant (3 embryos). Suckling were detected at four females, the number of active teats (2-4) equalling the number of placental scars. Reproduction period, calculated from the age of juveniles, was long (from winter to summer). No seasonal difference was found in the gonado-somatic index values of adult males, and births were estimated to have occurred from winter to summer. The stomach was empty in 31% of the cases, while mean weight of the stomach content was 49 g the main food eaten by otters was small-size, non-commercial fish. In the adult age group, the organ weight index of the kidneys (P<0.01) and adrenal glands (P<0.05) was greater in females, while in case of the other organs: heart, liver, spleen, tyroid glands and lungs no significant difference was found

Male diet, female experience, and female size influence maternal investment in swordtails

Correlations between male phenotype and female investment in offspring size or number may result from either male influences or female responses to male phenotype. Theory has predicted that females may invest differentially in response to mate attractiveness either to take advantage of her partner's attractiveness or to compensate for it. The outcome can depend on the female's expected future fitness. Empirical evidence also suggests that females adjust offspring size or fecundity according to the genetic or phenotypic traits of the male. Though the role of future fitness in empirical results is often difficult to assess, female experience has been shown to influence reproductive investment. This result could indicate that experience informs the female's assessment of current and future mating opportunities (i.e., expected future fitness). Here, we tested whether female experience and mate attractiveness affected offspring size and number in sheepshead swordtails. We manipulated mate attractiveness by feeding males different diets, as females have been shown to prefer well-fed males. We found that females exposed to well-fed males, and then mated to poorly fed males, produced the largest offspring. Clutch size increased more rapidly with female size for females with mates on a poor diet, independent of female experience. Our results suggest that swordtail females elevate their investment in offspring size and number when mated to poorly fed males. These results demonstrate that maternal investment can be influenced by female social environment and experience, with underappreciated consequences for offspring fitness. © 2012 The Author
