Chinese users’ preference for web browser icons
No full textThis paper compares the perspicacity, appropriateness and preference of web browser icons from leading software providers with those of a culture-specific design. The history and future direction of web browsers is outlined, together with the implications for the future growth of Chinese internet users. China, with its rapidly expanding young netizens has now overtaken the USA in terms of the number of internet users (253 million) and we predict it will reach saturation (?70% internet penetration rate) by 2012. If correct, this will have a dramatic effect on the use of English as the ‘Lingua Franca’ of the Internet. This online study was conducted in Taiwan and involved 103 participants (mean age 21 years), who were given three sets of web browser icons to review, namely Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0, Macintosh Safari 3.0, and culturally specific icons created using the Culture-Centred Design methodology. The findings of the study show that all three sets have generally high recognition rates, but that some icon functions (e.g. Go/Visit and Favourite) in all three sets have poor recognition rates and are considered inappropriate. No full textSCOPO DEL LAVORO:
La capillare diffusione internet delle informazioni mediche ha cambiato nell'ultimo decennio la cultura
del paziente che si sottopone a visita urologica. Tuttavia l'informazione medica che il paziente può trovare
sul web è scarsamente controllata e generica. Questo può essere causa di autovalutazioni errate
sul proprio stato di salute con possibiliripercussioni sul decorso e cura della malattia stessa. Inoltre, l'utente
internet non riesce ad ottenere dal web risposte ed informazioni "patientoriented". La SIU ha istituito
un sito web sul tema delle patologie prostatiche, offrendo all'utente internet la possibilità di avere
un teleconsulto urologico.
MATERIALI E METODI:
Nel 2007 la SIU ha attivato il sito www.prevenzioneprostata.it. Il sito prevede la possibilità di porre quesiti
su 3 argomenti specifici: tumore della prostata, IBP e prostatiti. Otto esperti sono stati selezionati
per rispondere entro 48 ore ai quesiti posti dai pazienti. L'attività di consulenza online è iniziata nel
dicembre 2007. Il sito offre la possibilità di avere libero accesso allo storico di tutte le domanderisposte,
permette di consultare le domande più frequentemente formulate e offre una descrizione generale delle
patologie prostatiche. Abbiamo valutato i risultati dei primi 6 mesi di esperienza del sito www.prevenzioneprostata.

RISULTATI:
La media dei contatti mensili è stata 30354 (range 1829435237); il numero totale di domande valutate
è stato di 494 (Dicembre 2007Aprile 2007), così distribuite per i 3 temi principali: 130 (26,3%) tumore
della prostata; 129 (26,1 %) IPB; 225 (45,6%) prostatiti. L'età media dei pazienti era di 51.4 anni. 44
domande sono state giudicate non valutabili e non risposte. Nel tema cancro della prostata i pazienti
hanno richiesto più frequentemente chiarimenti sul loro valore del PSA e su quali metodiche diagnostiche
eseguire per prevenire il tumore. Nel tema IPB i pazienti hanno con maggior frequenza richiesto
informazioni sui sintomi e sulla terapia. Nel tema prostatiti sono giunte domande di tipo prevalentemente
andrologico: disturbi dell'eiaculazione (61 domande), disfunzione erettile (37 domande) ed infertilità
maschile (6 domande). 19 domande (3,8%) sono state formulate da donne, le quali ponevano quesiti
su disturbi urinari (42,1%%), di erezione (36.8%) o sulla terapia (21,1%) del partner. La maggiore difficoltà
incontrata da parte degli esperti è stata l'incompletezza di dati di alcune domande (età, sintomi,
ecc.).
DISCUSSIONE E MESSAGGIO CONCLUSIVO:
Il teleconsulto è stato richiesto da pazienti di qualsiasi età e con domande equamente distribuite tra i
temi cancro prostata e IPB. Abbiamo osservato un crescente interesse per argomenti andrologici. La
prima esperienza italiana di teleconsulto urologico istituzionale (SIU) ha ottenuto un crescente successo
tra i pazienti che navigano in internet e i risultati ottenuti indicano la necessità di proseguire ed
implementare questa nuova forma di comunicazione medica che offre al paziente il vantaggio di essere
sicura e controllata

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
No full textThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
