Macedonian direct objects, clitics and the left periphery
This dissertation investigates the patterning of Macedonian direct object DPs with respect to clitic pronouns. The occurrence of clitics with direct objects in Macedonian varies along two dimensions, the type of DP and the position of DP. Two broad classes are considered, regular and wh DPs, and positions both within IP and at the left periphery. The patterning of direct objects can be schematically represented as follows: (i) [IP Subj (CL) V QP/wh] (ii) [IP Subj QP/wh (CL) V ] (iii) [XPQP/wh [IP Subj (CL) V]] The clitic co-occurrence restrictions in Macedonian are argued to be sensitive to the feature specification for strength of the DPs. Within each class of DPs, I show that there are well defined distinctions which correlate with the DPs' distinctive semantic properties. In particular, the specification of the regular DPs is linked to their strength in the sense of Barwise & Cooper (1981); the specification of the wh DPs is linked to their D-linking properties in the sense of Pesetsky (1987) and Comorovski (1996). The occurrence of the clitics is shown to be regulated by the Clitic Criterion (Sportiche 1998), with the clitic licensing a particular feature in the DP with which it co-occurs. The licensing is carried out through an agreement relation, in a Spec-Head configuration. It is proposed that only [+strong] DPs satisfy the Clitic Criterion. As such, within IP only strong DPs trigger the appearance of the clitic pronoun. At the left periphery, however, weak DPs can optionally occur with clitics. This can be explained through the possibility of some weak DPs entering into a binding relation with pro in argument position, which satisfies the Clitic Criterion. This explanation depends on a characterization of the DPs as [+strong], [-strong] and unspecified. I present arguments to establish that DPs at the left periphery that occur with clitics differ derivationally from those without clitics. I further establish on the basis of subject intervention effects, that wh-phrases with clitics occupy a higher position than wh-phrases without clitics, and suggest that the same holds for regular DPs.Ph.D.Includes abstractVitaIncludes bibliographical referencesby Slavica Kochovsk
"The Opportunity of a Thousand Years": Chinese Merchant Organisations in the Russian Civil War
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Slavica Publishers via the DOI in this record.Historians have recently begun to engage more systematically with the regional and inter-cultural dimensions of the Russian Revolution and Civil War. Attention was first focused on Russia’s provinces, where revolutionary processes adapted to local economies, institutions and structures of power. The Revolution’s impact on various ethnic and religious groups, such as Ukrainians, Jews and Muslims, has also been studied. The Russian empire’s size, the diversity of its periphery and its complex relationships with both European and Asian neighbours made non-Russian and cross-border interests impossible to ignore. [...
Visualizing Social Entrepreneurship in Croatia: Macro-Meso-Micro Level Interactions
Dizajn/metodologija/pristup: Istraživanje koristi općenito post-pozitivistički, kvalitativan pristup, povezuje teoriju kompleksnosti i utemeljenu teoriju radi analiziranja dinamike razina pojedinca (mikro razina), entiteta (mezo razina) i šireg sustava (makro razina).
Purpose: The purpose of this doctoral dissertation is to promote the understanding of social entrepreneurship in Croatia by exploring the linkages between actors at different levels in their pursuit of balancing social and economic goals. The deployment of visual techniques together with narrative, storytelling, serves to communicate the dynamic layers of social entrepreneurship for diverse stakeholders.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The research utilizes a broadly post-positivist, qualitative approach, combining complexity theory and grounded theory to analyse the individual (micro-), entity (meso-) and broader system (macro-) level dynamics. The research ‘bends and blends’ an array of research methods and tools, utilizing and adapting ethnographic and participant observation, allowing the researcher to remain close to social entrepreneurship interactions through field work immersion over many years. Triangulation of methods, combined with a commitment to reflexive research practice, helped to produce visualizations and narrative accounts, case studies and vignettes capable of describing and analyzing dynamic, emergent, phenomena at different levels and the interaction between them.
Findings: The social entrepreneurship eco-system in Croatia is evolving, albeit fitfully and unevenly, across the domains of policy, finance, culture, support, human capital. While emphasis has been placed on social enterprise models that can be adopted or adapted to Croatia the future development of the sector will require support across public, private and nonprofit institutions. The University has a role in building bridges between generations to help draw attention to bringing social and economic goals together in the mindset of future graduates, alumni, partners and other stakeholders. Social entrepreneurs dealing with apparent ‘success’ and ‘failure’ can provide key lessons on how micro-level interactions have implications on both social enterprise sustainability as well as broader macro-level ramifications that need to be addressed over time.
Research limitations/implications: Future research can build on the model developed, mapping out additional cases of sustainable business initiatives and addressing the institutional conditions which allowed them to thrive. A greater consensus regarding definitions and practice may be obtained through comparative studies extended strategically across a European-wide research network. The exploratory and conceptual foundations of social entrepreneurship presented here require further elaboration to establish robust theory relevant across multiple levels and contexts.
Practical Implications: Sharing information between laypersons and experts in the social and economic spheres is more likely to be achieved through creating visualization and storytelling tools which make pattern recognition of social needs and business opportunities more transparent rather than through the generation of ever more data. The visual tools introduced can help map out the social entrepreneurship eco-system. In this way the role of diverse public, private and nonprofit sector actors can be rendered more clearly thereby increasing the possibilities for a strong collaborative environment with positive social and economic impact. Originality and Value: The study proposes adopting a perspective that nests terminology of social entrepreneurship (macro), social enterprise (meso), social entrepreneur (micro) in levels in order to make it clear that the concepts are interconnected but not necessarily interchangeable. This adds value to the existing body of knowledge as it builds on anchor work and can improve the ease in which new researchers can make targeted contributions

Sožžennyj roman Ja. É. Golosovkera v kontekste Legendy o Velikom inkvizitore F. M. Dostoevskogo i romana M. Bulgakova Master i Margarita
More than sixty years after it has been written yet another novel about
Jesus and diabolical temptation in the Russian capital of the twenties
appeared in the journal Druzhba narodov. The history of the manuscript
that first was burnt by a friend of the author and after its restoration got
lost in the era of Stalinism is highly intriguing as is the biography of its
author Jakov Golosovker. Due to his preoccupation with the works of
Dostoevsky and the German philosophers, especially Kant, Golosovker

in his novel gave the literary answer to the novel by Dostoevsky that had
the highest impact on him: the Brothers Karamazov. In three successive
nights in a Moscow clinic for mental illness a patient discusses with his
alter ego, an appearence of Jesus himself, the ways of Christianity and
the eternal questions of how Good could triumph in the world. The main
issue is the question to which extent modern man is in need of Jesus and
whether he needs him at all. The illustration of the philosophical
discussions are four scenes on the streets of Moscow where in a highly
sarcastic and ironic way judgement is pronounced on the state of mind
of Soviet citizens and the power of the Idea of socialism. At the same
time Golosovker reacts to various political statements of his fellow
writers and tries to explain how it come that Jesus finds out that he is not
needed anymore in a city widely subdued to a mistaken interpretation of
the Christian teachings
Pickleherring Returns to the Kremlin : More New Sources on the Pre-History of the Russian Court Theatre
This article, a continuation of “Orpheus and Pickleherring in the Kremlin: The ‘Ballet’ for the Tsar of February 1672” (Scando-Slavica 59:2), focuses on the second performance given for Tsar Aleksej Michajlovič by foreign residents of Moscow. This encore production, in May 1672, expanded upon the programme of the February event: it was longer, featured more characters on stage, and even included some female characters (certainly portrayed by male performers). In addition to revealing this May entertainment, we discuss the identities of the performers (largely drawn from the merchant population of Moscow’s Foreign Quarter), and we suggest that the author of the eye-witness account describing the February performance was Christoff Koch (ennobled von Kochen), a Swedish correspondent and commercial representative in Moscow. Almost simultaneously with the May performance, the Russian court began to make plans for a more permanent theatre; we trace the court’s attempts to contact the important German acting troupe headed by the Paulsen and Velten families. Finally, we discuss the impacts these two performances may have had on the plays offered by the tsar’s court theatre beginning in October 1672, with special focus on the character Pickleherring
What «Slavic tribe» is? Answering the editorial questions of «Studia Slavica et Balcanica Petropolitana»
The notions «tribe» and «tribal association» have been used by the archaeologists, including
the author, for a long time to define the ethno-territorial communities (the Slavic ones of «antiquity» and
Middle Ages as well), correlating with certain archaeological culture or its local branches. Meanwhile, these
definitions do not cover the whole range of ethno-social and politico-potestary bodies, including synchrostadial
tribes and their associations. The Slavic tribes can be associated with the segmental lineages, basing
on the African materials. «Chiefdoms» can be of different forms, including tribal association and complex
ethno-potestary tribes with different forms of government and organization of power. The mechanism of emergence of tribal and supra-tribal structures, which are essential for these bodies, are different, but
limited (about ten) and range in various Slavic and Germanic groups. A retinue can be a consolidating factor,
but on the supra-tribal level. In Ancient Rus’ it served as a tool during the period of the «early state»
consolidation, which transformed local tribal associations — «Sklavinias» — into a new «supra-complex
chiefdom» in the second half of the tenth century. The Slavic community of the Middle Ages was unified
by the kindred languages and dialects, and by nothing else, except the consciousness of the educated highranked
clergymen — the authors of the chronicles and annals
Rezension Anna-Elisabeth Jensen, Freunde und Feinde. Dania Slavica. Südseeland, Lolland-Falster und Møn in der Wikingerzeit und im Hochmittelalter. University Press, Aarhus 2023.
The book is a German translation of the author's publication "Dania Slavica - Sydsjælland, Lolland-Falster og Møn i vikingetid og tidlig middelalder" from 2022. From around AD 750 to 1250, the three islands Lolland, Falster and Møn were an important buffer zone in the struggles for economic and political control of the western Baltic, and thus also a zone of close contact between Slavic and Scandinavian culture. In a cross-disciplinary approach, the author combines historical sources with analyses of the physical landscape and the archaeological evidence
