Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Contributo alla ricerca della storia della stazione climatica e balneare a Lovran alla fi ne del ‘800 ed all’inizio del ‘900
Get PDFU prilogu se rekonstruira tijek i opisuju okolnosti formalno-pravnoga postupka koji su u svrhu proglašenja lječilišta u Lovranu (luogo di cura; Kurort) vodila mjerodavna upravna i politička tijela Markgrofovije Istre u razdoblju od 1898. do 1909.
Prilogom se također ukazuje na bogatu i neistraženu arhivsku građu o Lovranu u Državnom arhivu u Rijeci i Državnom arhivu u Trstu, stoga se ovdje objavljuju u cjelovitu prijepisu i hrvatskom prijevodu s talijanskog jezika dva relevantna arhivska izvora koji svjedoče o zaključenju navedenog postupka. Prvi je od njih Zakon od 10. prosinca 1905., kojim se utvrđuju temeljni propisi za uređenje lječilišne uprave u lječilišnom okrugu Lovran, a drugi Objava c. k. Namjesništva Primorja od 16. ožujka 1909., br. IX-249/6, koja se odnosi na Lječilišni pravilnik za lječilišni okrug Lovran.Nell’articolo l’autrice ricostruisce il corso e descrive le circostanze del procedimento formale e legale condotto nel periodo tra il 1898 ed il 1909 dai competenti organi amministrativi e politici del Margraviato d’Istria, allo scopo di proclamazione della stazione climatica e balneare a Lovran (luogo di cura;

Written testimony of Bernard Nathan, given in 1963, on the history of the Jewish Religious Community of Opatija
Get PDFU članku se objavljuje pisani iskaz Bernarda Nathana o povijesti Židovske vjerske općine u Opatiji iz prosinca 1963., koji je temeljni arhivski izvor za istraživanje povijesti židovske zajednice u Opatiji.This article, after almost fifty years of its creation, for the first time in the Croatian language and in the integral form, publishes the written testimony by Bernard Nathan given to the Federation of Yugoslavia of the Jewish Communities in Belgrade regarding the history of the Jewish community in Opatija (Die Geschichte der Israelitischen Kultursgemeinde von Abazzia). Bernard Nathan was a Jewish activist since the first years of Jewish presence in Liburnia at the end of the 19th century, who since 1924 until his captivity by the Fascists in southern Italy in June 1940 performed the function of President of the Jewish Community of Opatija (Comunita Israelitica di Abbazia). Along with the introductory review of the motivation for his testimony, in the main body of the article, Nathan described the beginnings of Jewish presence and the creation of institutional foundations of the Jewish Community in Opatija of the Habsburg empire at the end of the 19th century, the creation and the activities of the Jewish Religious Community from its formal- legal establishment under the Italian administration in 1923 until its closure soon after outbreak of the World War Two, due to the mass extermination of its members in Fascist and Nazi persecution (1938-1945.). In the Epilogue, as a separate section, dated 25 February 1964, Nathan described the outcomes of his endeavors to decipher the Hebrew writing in the lower part of the Aron Ha-Kodesh from the Opatija synagogue, integrated after the war into the monument in memory of persecuted Opatija Jews at the Opatija Jewish cemetery. He attached to it a brief expert report by the German art historian Georgina Ban-Volkmar (Die Hebraische Inschrift des Aron ha-Qodesch derfruheren Synagogue in Opatija, Yugoslavia)

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

znanstvenog simpozija “Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach: Život i djelo izumitelja Valiuma” (Opatija,
Villa Angiolina, 18. svibnja 2006.) te postavljanje spomen-obilježja na kuću u Opatiji u kojoj je
dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, ugledni američki znanstvenik rodom iz Opatije, proveo djetinjstvo.
Projekt su realizirali učenici Gimnazije Eugena Kumičića u Opatiji: Ana Petrovčić, David
Dezsô, Dominik Pažin, Davor Dujmić, Marin Dujmić i Hrvoje Tramontana tijekom školske
godine 2005./06., u okviru rada povijesne grupe. Projekt je proizišao iz posebnog programa
edukacije o holokaustu i ljudskim pravima, koji uključuje i istraživanje povijesti predratne
židovske zajednice Opatije, čijim je dijelom bila i obitelj Sternbach. Temelji se na istraživanju
izvorne arhivske građe, biografske literature i periodike te primjeni historiografske metode
usmene povijesti (oral history). Predstavljen je PowerPoint prezentacijom tijekom programa
simpozija u kojem su strani i domaći izlagači osvijetlili činjenice iz života i znanstvenog
djelovanja dr. Lea Henryka Sternbacha, istaknuvši njegov izvanredni doprinos razvoju
medicinske znanosti XX. stoljeća.This report deals with a school project that prompted the organisation of the international
scientific symposium «Dr. Leo H. Sternbach: Life and Work of Valium Inventor» (Opatija,
Villa Angiolina,18th May 2006.), and the unveiling of the commemorative plaque on the
house in Opatija where Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, an eminent American scientist originating
from Opatija, spent his childhood.
The project was realised by the pupils of The Eugen Kumičić Grammar School in Opatija;
Ana Petrovčić, David Deszô, Dominik Pažin, Davor Dujmić, Marin Dujmić and Hrvoje
Tramontana during the 2005/6 academic year, as an assignment of the school history group.
The project stemmed from a special curriculum on the holocaust and human rights education
including the research into the history of pre-war Jewish community in Opatija, of which
the Sternbach family was a part. It was based on the research of original archive material,
biographic literature and the application of the historiographic method of oral history.
The project was expounded through PowerPoint presentation in the course of the symposium
during which both foreign and Croatian presenters shed light on facts pertaining to life and
scientific work of Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach, emphasising his exceptional contribution to the
development of the medical science of the 20th century. On 18th May 2006, under the auspices
of Roche Croatia and the Town of Opatija, the scientific symposium “Dr. Leo Henryk
Sternbach: Life and Work of Valium Inventor” was held at the Villa Angiolina in Opatija.
Also, the unveiling of the commemorative plaque on the building at 114 Maršal Tito Street in
Opatija, where Dr. Leo Henryk Sternbach spent his childhood was ceremoniously performed,
marking thus the perennial memory of this distinguished scientist (picture 14)
