The Rise and Fall of Danish Encyclopedias, 1891-2017
Stories of successful works have often dominated the history of Scandinavian encyclopedias. This is understandable given the rich encyclopedia tradition that characterizes the Scandinavian book market. Among the publications within this tradition, one encyclopedia stands out in particular. By being in print for more than sixty years, Salmonsens Konversationsleksikon had a special impact on the development of the genre in both Denmark and Norway. From 1891 to the second half of the 1950s, the influential family company J.H. Schultz published various editions of the encyclopedia. For years, it was considered one of the most important knowledge forums for the well-educated in the Scandinavian countries. Scattered among histories of great publications, we also find another and often overlooked storyline, namely the history of the unsuccessful or the incomplete—the stranded encyclopedia. In this chapter, Maria Simonsen explores a number of stranded Danish encyclopedias—printed as well as digital—and thereby gives new insights into the long history of the Danish encyclopedia tradition. Throughout her study, Simonsen argues that regardless of time and space, and no matter what media you publish in—print or digital—there are some obstacles and challenges for the encyclopedic genre that are universal.<br/
Keywords: relationships, attachment, home of treatment for youth, youth, significant others, trust. In our essay we had an aim to see how Hassela, Gotland affected the youths who lived there. We wanted to know if they had a secure or insecure attachment to their parents and if the attachment was affected after a time at Hassela. We were interested in what kind of attachment figures they had before they came to Hassela, Gotland and how they looked at themselves and others before they came there and if that had been changed. We used a qualitative method and we did ten interviews with youths who had been at Hassela, Gotland eight months or longer. We based our analysis on the attachment theory. We also used a theory about significant others. All of the youths in our interviews had some kind of insecure attachment to one or both of their parents before they arrived to Hassela, Gotland. Everyone had a problem in trusting grown-ups and forming relationships. A majority of the youths had been changed in some way. After the visit many youths were able to trust people, which probably made it easier for them to form good and healthy relationships in the future. Some of the youths had not changed as much as others, and were still trying to find out how to form real relationships and how to trust people

Between Tradition and Experiment:The Idea of a new University
From the mid-1960s to the mid 1970s, three new universities were established in Denmark: Odense (1966), Roskilde (1972) and Aalborg (1974). Until then only two universities existed in Denmark: Copenhagen (1479) and Aarhus (1928). Located on the outskirts of the major cities, the new institutions played an important part in reforming and transforming higher education in Denmark. The youngest university, Aalborg University, is approaching its 50th anniversary. This is an opportunity to take a step back and examine the university in long-term perspective. In this article, I investigate the discussions and expectations concerning the establishment of the university in the period 1958–1974. Based on contemporaneous debates in the regional newspaper Aalborg Stiftstidende and interviews with several key figures, the study seeks to analyze the underlying ideas and ideals which characterized the discussion by asking the following questions: What was the projected purpose of the new university? What ideals were expressed in the debate? In the last part of this article, I will reflect on the historiographical developments in the history of the university. In recent years, several new approaches have expanded the field and made visible new aspects of the institutions’ histories. I will discuss why a focus on the ideas, ideals and expectations of the university, and thereby of the university as a knowledge institution, is essential to include in a study of its history
Stranded Encyclopedias, 1700-2000:Exploring Unfinished, Unpublished, Unsuccessful Encyclopedic Projects
On the Margins of Knowledge
At the end of June, the bi-annual Gewina Woudschoten Conference was held in the small city of Zeist in the Netherlands. It is primarily a conference attended by researchers from the field of history of science, but this year the conference theme was Towards a History of Knowledge and had attracted researchers from several neighboring disciplines as information history and book history. In his keynote presentation Stéphane Vandamme, professor at the EUI, talked about “how the historians of knowledge found a way of consolidating its heuristic position by moving to a global framework, though he pointed that this shift doesn’t mean that history of Knowledge is the future of history of science in a global perspective”. During the two days, nearly 50 presentations sought to answer questions like: What is the history of knowledge? How does it relate to the history of science? And what do we gain by adopting the history of knowledge? The conference spanned a width in chronological aspects and thematical aspects of the history of knowledge from East German polar science to a discussion on how the margins of texts became zones of conflict in the interpretation of texts amongst Medieval scholars. One of the highlights of the 8th Gewina Woudschoten Conference was the launch of the Journal for the History of Knowledge, JHoK, the new official journal of Gewina
