The aim of this work is to ransom Monteiro Lobato’s metalanguage presented in a unique and chronological corpus and to demonstrate that it contains orality marks, creating a speech the author himself denominates “conversation in shirt sleeves”. We elected the corpus, A Barca de Gleyre, judging this is a special opus, in wich Lobato himself relates his linguistic considerations along forty years in held correspondence with the friend and also writer Godofredo Rangel. A distinguishing vision of the author’s life is represented, are focusing altogether this biography and Monteiro Lobato’s considerations about the language in a synchronal perspective. We show it as it follows, a descriptive summary of the spoken and written modalities of the language, wich helps in Lobato’s reflexions and posture, once the author has already recognized the existence of this two modalities. After that, we increase the theoretical presupposition related to the select aspects for the research are presented. It preceeds to the happening analysis in the author’s speech, in wich concerns his own metalanguage, presence of repetitions, slang and fixed constructions, wich contributes to make the epistolary text in a conversation with a friend, a duo. In the conclusion, it is detached the valuable Lobato’s contribution, that through the opus A Barca de Gleyre, traced a prospect of language and literature during four decades and that demonstrates it through his own linguistic position that is possible to create a critical speech with the presence of repetitions , slang and fixed constructions that corroborates the expressiveness, text interaction and cohesion. It’s worthwhile saying that A Barca was one of the tools that made Lobato to be Lobato for the linguistic practice and disposition that both correspondents kept for so many years

ABSTRACT: The name Simone de Beauvoir is frequently associated to the struggle of feminism and to the existentialist philosophy. Endowed with a strong personality driven by social and political ideals clearly defined, this writer, with a multifaceted career, inspired vived reactions through her writing project and her personal positions taken throughout her life. We got used to see her involved on the defense of the most basic human rights and we witnessed the way her engagement conditioned her relation with Portugal. Bearing in mind that this work has the objective of illustrating the several aspects of Simone de Beauvoir’s relation with our country, we approached, with that purpose, the visits made by this author to our country, revealing the different aspects that involved them and, at the same time, establishing a parallel with other French writers who visited Portugal and wrote about it, and the image of portugal that her sister, Hèlène de Beauvoir, created, not only, through her paintings, but also, through her book, Souvenirs. The analysis of the impact that her visits had on the portuguese regular press, contributed to a better understanding of the relation the writer had with our country. Concerning the representation of Portugal created by her writing, we focused specially on the novel Les Mandarins, not only due to the controversy it caused, but also due to the notoriety it reached and to the fact that, in this novel, the portuguese episode assumes greater relevance. Besides this one, we analyzed other works like La Force des choses and La cérémonie des adieux, always establishing a correlation with the other works of the writer. This dissertation wishes, by these means, to cast some light on how Simone de Beauvoir saw our country, demystifying her vision, as well as showing its complexity

Evolution of cost recovery levels in the Portuguese water supply and wastewater industry 1998-2005

This paper assesses the situation in Portugal in 2005 regarding cost recovery in the water supply (WS) and wastewaterdrainage and treatment (WWDT) industry by type of system (bulk and retail water and wastewater), by type of utility and by NUTS III, halfway between the publication of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the meeting of the 2010 deadline. For that purpose, we build on the previous contribution by Monteiro (2007), which reported the situation in 2002, by updating the indicators to 2005 and assessing the evolution since 1998. We also present a brief historical overview of the presence of the cost recovery principle in Portuguese law regarding the industry. The main conclusions that stand out are: the introduction of the cost recovery principle is prior to the WFD and the more recent Water Law, although it lacked practical implementation; the level of revenues collected by the WS and WWDT utilities is insufficient to meet the financial costs of their activities; the situation is worse for wastewater than for WS systems, revealing evidence of cross-subsidization within the utilities which manage both systems; the situation has worsened in recent years; cost recovery levels are lower in the less densely populated and poorer inland regions; finally, we find no evidence associating cost recovery levels and the type of utility.Water Supply Systems; Wastewater Drainage and Treatment; Cost Recovery; Water Framework Directive; Water Law

Solar Typologies: A Comparative Analysis of Urban Form and Solar Potential

    No full text
Efficient use of energy in the construction sector is a pillar of the European Union’s 2050 climate protection goals, yet legislation makes no explicit reference to urban morphology or building form, which are recognized as key to energy performance in buildings. Rapidly changing energy standards and new requirements for on-site energy production demand a vigorous scrutiny of established urban typologies that are largely the product of an older energy regime. The research explores a set of 312 building shapes with floor-to-area ratio (FAR) of 3 within a given plot to identify emerging trends, ranges, and correlations between geometric variables, visual comfort, and energy indicators. Cases are grouped and evaluated in relation to three main urban typologies to highlight unique features related to each typology. The paper also compares two groups of results related to passive and active solar potential, respectively, to identify formal traits that are specific to each of these two design strategies. Finally, the research ranks design options based on total energy use taking into account the energy need for artificial lighting as well as contributions from both passive energy savings and active energy production. Results show that energy demand across cases varies by a factor 2 for passive strategies and a factor 5 when active potential is considered based on shape alone. Best results are clearly positioned at the two extremes of the geometric and proportional range. On the one hand, low-rise compact bar and courtyard buildings that are perhaps most prevalent in our cities today may be effectively retrofitted to meet active energy targets. On the other hand, extremely tall and slim towers appear to be the only typology in the study with the potential to achieve zero-energy status by virtue of their form alone. The work sheds light on the formal implications of EU energy mandates and offers a glimpse of how buildings may adapt to the combined selective pressures of high on-site energy fraction and low energy use to shape our future cities

Etymology. the specific epithet, “ adkruidenieri ”, refers to the similarity between the new species, A. kruidenieri, and A. parakruidenieri. Description. (Based on 16 specimens “in toto”). Body 582 (499–671; n= 5) long, 127 (86–168; n= 5) wide. Tegument smooth. Cephalic lobes well developed. Eyes 4, posterior pair larger than anterior. Pharynx subspherical, 41 (33–56; n= 5) long, 38 (34–48; n= 5) wide. Haptor with 7 pairs of hooks and 2 pairs (1 dorsal, 1 ventral) of 4 A’s. Anchors, bars absent. Hooks 37 (32–41; n= 37), with truncate thumb, shaft straight, recurved point reduced, shank with expanded proximal bulbous portion with central, elliptical foramen. FH loop about 0.4 length of shank. Male copulatory organ 90 (76–104; n= 15) long, a sclerotized tube, wide, slightly sinuous with expanded distal portion. Accessory piece 84 (76-101, n = 13) long, rod-shaped, articulated with base of MCO and coiled around it. Testis postgermarial 106 (86–127; n= 3) long, 72 (66–79; n= 4) wide; vas deferens looping around left intestinal cecum, seminal vesicle a dilation of vas deferens. Germarium 84 (53–91; n= 4) long, 50 (36–66; n= 5) wide. Vitellaria in two bilateral fields of trunk, extending from pharynx to posterior region of trunk, coextensive with intestinal ceca. Oviduct, ootype not observed. Metraterm delicate, non-sclerotized. Egg not observed. Remarks. Anacanthorus adkruidenieri sp. n. belongs to a group formed by A. kruidenieri and A. parakruidenieri, with the following characteristics: 1) MCO a sclerotized tube, slightly sinuous; 2) accessory piece articulated with the base of the MCO and rod-shaped; 3) hooks with reduced, inconspicuous or absent recurved portion, shank with expanded proximal bulbous with central foramen. A. adkruidenieri sp. n. differs from A. parakruidenieri mainly by the morphology of the accessory piece: in both species this structure is rod-shaped, but in A. parakruidenieri it has a median bifurcation, while in the new species a bifurcation is not present. Anacanthorus adkruidenieri sp. n. and A. kruidenieri are very similar in the male copulatory complex. In both species the MCO is a sclerotized, slightly sinuous tube and the accessory piece is an elongated rod, not bifurcated, articulated with the base of the copulatory complex. The species can be differentiated by the dimensions of the male copulatory organ (A. kruidenieri = 162–190; A. adkruidenieri sp. n. = 76–104) and accessory piece (A. kruidenieri = 148–174; A. adkruidenieri sp. n. = 76–101), which are larger in A. kruidenieri than in A. adkruidenieri sp. n. Unlike the structures of the male copulatory complex, the hooks of A. kruidenieri are larger than those of A. adkruidenieri sp.n. (A. kruidenieri = 42–44; A. adkruidenieri sp. n = 32–41). There are also observed differences in the dilated portion of the shaft, which is hexagonal in A. kruidenieri and oval in A. adkruidenieri sp. n. The type material of A. parakruidenieri was re-studied and the distal portion of the MCO presents a terminal expansion that was not mentioned in the original description.Published as part of Monteiro, Cassandra Moraes, Cohen, Simone Chinicz & Brasil-Sato, Marilia Carvalho, 2015, New species and reports of dactylogyrids (Monogenoidea) from Salminus franciscanus (Actinopterygii: Bryconidae) from the upper São Francisco River, Brazil, pp. 137-143 in Zootaxa 3941 (1) on pages 138-139, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.3941.1.9, http://zenodo.org/record/23814
