From an anthropological-historical perspective, focused on early writings of Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910), the aim of the present study is to understand where and how his theories are either travel accounts and/or ethnographic work‟s. This work aims to: a) analyze the text construction of travel and ethnographic narrative; b) investigate and problematize the notions of science and culture present in both models of thinking and writing; c) relate the work of this author, Paolo Mantegazza, to current Applied Anthropology, contributing with a historical perspective to this discussion. The work is focused on three works by Mantegazza, from the mid-nineteenth century: "Viajes por el Río de La Plata y el interior la Confederación Argentina" (1867), "Physiology of Love" (1873) and "The Love of Men" (1886)
A sequel to Cuore? De Amicis and Mantegazza, the story of a literary feud
Based on unpublished material, this article aims to reconstruct the relationship between the scientist Paolo Mantegazza, author of a sequel to Cuore entitled Testa (1887), and Edmondo De Amicis. Their relationship appeared friendly but was in fact marked by mutual envy. An analysis of the letters sent by the publisher Emilio Treves to Mantegazza also provides useful insights into the publishing history of De Amicis’s masterpiece, its immediate reception, and the planning of a follow-up volume
The project for a House for Worker Families in Milan by engineer Emilio Mantegazza
The essay investigates in detail the residential worker district designed in 1877 by the engineer Emilio Mantegazza who presented it to the public through the publication of a special small volume. In addition to providing the chronological references the action of Mantegazza takes place within, the author highlights the innovative features of the designed neighborhood, which range from the installations of the individual apartments to the relationships with the urban context and the creation of common spaces for the playtime, personal hygiene and cultural emancipation. Moreover, in the essay there are references to the scenario of knowledge on the homes of the less wealthy Milan citizens and the foreign models studied by Mantegazza and introduced in his project, including the Edwards System for the water system of the latrines already widespread in England and , in particular, in London homes
Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910) e a escrita scientífica do amor
This work is a historical-anthropological analysis of two books of the Italian physician, physiologist and anthropologist Paolo Mantegazza (1831-1910). It is intended to describe how the author, especially in his anthropological work, introduces elements of research in the field of sexuality that were not in the agenda of anthropologists who worked from the cultural evolution; well as the ways Mantegazza presents certain problems that are extensively worked by sexologists and other scientists over the XX and XXI centuries. For this, we seek to reflect the extent to which his arguments were entered in a field of knowledge shared between the determinations of "nature" and those of "culture" in the classification of social life and how elements of different "sciences" was mobilized for the author to the formulation of these arguments. From this discussion, it intends problematize a specific way of doing anthropology in the nineteenth century and the establishment of the notion of evolution both as a concept and as a wide border theory, next to Love, made possible speak about sex
The novel L’anno 3000 by Paolo Mantegazza (1897) was linked with an English text translated into Italy in 1890, Looking Backward: 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy. It was a text that at the time had an incredible success, and which was soon translated into several languages. In Bellamy’s book the travel is exclusively temporal, with a great attention from the author to the verisimilitude, since the protagonist, asleep through hypnosis, awakens in his own city several decades later, showing the differences with respect to his “normal” life. The novel by Mantegazza is different and the pretext of time travel, compared to Bellamy, is less credible: a couple, to celebrate their “fruitful marriage” five years after the “marriage of love”, decides to take a trip through Europe and Asia to Andropolis, a giant megalopolis at the foot of the Himalayas. The trip is an opportunity to present to the reader the different aspects of the cities visited, according to a rigid and rather common scheme that sees in the classics of utopian literature the major antecedents, from Tommaso Campanella to Thomas More passing through Jonathan Swift, especially with regard to employment irony. Each crossed city is analyzed according to one or more utopian aspects, obviously following the scientific suggestions of the author. In opposition to the socialist utopia of Bellamy, inspired by the Marxist theories, Mantegazza proposes an operation sometimes parodistic where the optimism of the colleague is constantly challenged. The only element that, according to the author, could lead humanity to a real improvement of their living conditions is blind trust in progress and in science, through all its forms, in particular demographic control, pharmacology, and its applications to the conception and genetics

Global existence and stability for the modified Mullins–Sekerka and surface diffusion flow†
In this survey we present the state of the art about the asymptotic behavior and stability of the modified Mullins–Sekerka flow and the surface diffusion flow of smooth sets, mainly due to E. Acerbi, N. Fusco, V. Julin and M. Morini. First we discuss in detail the properties of the nonlocal Area functional under a volume constraint, of which the two flows are the gradient flow with respect to suitable norms, in particular, we define the strict stability property for a critical set of such functional and we show that it is a necessary and sufficient condition for minimality under W2,p–perturbations, holding in any dimension. Then, we show that, in dimensions two and three, for initial sets sufficiently “close” to a smooth strictly stable critical set E, both flows exist for all positive times and asymptotically “converge” to a translate of E.Applied Probabilit
On-Line Data-Based Load Classification in Narrow-Track Vehicles
In automotive applications, the knowledge of the vehicle load is a crucial factor that can bring significant improvement on safety and performance, e.g. in ABS or semiactive suspensions control. In narrow-track vehicles, this aspect is even more important, considering that the mass variation - w.r.t to the vehicle one - is higher than in standard vehicles. The objective of this work is to present an on-line data-based mass classifier based on inertial sensors only. The effectiveness of the approach is assessed on experimental data taken from a real vehicle
The Art of Taking a Wife
Paolo Mantegazza's The Art of Taking a Wife is a sincere, dispassionate, and often controversial guide that treats marriage as the gravest and most intricate problem of life. The author champions marriage as the most honest, healthy, and ideal mode of loving, contrasting it with venal love and seduction, yet he cautions against the prevailing societal corruption where hypocrisy reigns and financial considerations often supplant genuine affection. Mantegazza urges the thoughtful man to approach selecting a wife with the utmost scrutiny, recommending the use of eyes, a microscope, and a telescope—that is, careful observation, detailed analysis of character, and prophetic vision for the future—to solve the problem correctly. The book meticulously explores critical elements like age discrepancies, physical and intellectual compatibility, and financial balance, using vivid anecdotes to illustrate the potential for domestic "Hell," "Purgatory," or "Paradise." Ultimately, it is a passionate call for honest and well-considered matrimony, asserting that while mistakes may happen, happiness is best secured by deep reflection and maintaining a clear conscience, supported by the safeguard of divorce.
Improving Zonisamide Manufacturing: Insights into Stereochemistry and Mechanisms for Continuous Optimization
Zonisamide is a heterocyclic sulfonamide widely employed as anticonvulsant. In this work, we report an efficient process for the preparation of zonisamide, obtained in a six-step synthesis from phenyl salicylate with an overall 31% yield. The key step is represented by a base-promoted intramolecular rearrangement of a β-ketosultone oxime, leading to the concomitant formation of the benzisoxazole ring and of the exocyclic sulfonic group. This intriguing transformation is investigated with a combination of analytical techniques (NMR, HRMS, PXRD), leading to a preliminary mechanistic proposal
