It is shown that the scheme suggested by R.L. Liboff [Phys. Lett. A 334 (2005) 42] cannot lead to significant energy production by fusion reactions. A modest energy release (less than 1% of the value claimed by Liboff) is obtained from the reaction n + Li-6 -> T + He-4 + 4.78 MeV, while fusion reactions only occur at negligible rate. Sergio Atzeni’s works are many and really heterogeneous, both in style and contents. But if we dig up deeply into his texts, we discover that the currents followed by the author are always the same, and that texts that are apparently different have actually significant common aspects.

Concentration, market power and international tax competition

    No full text
Over the past few decades, there has been a notable increase in firms’ market power accompanied by a global decrease in Corporate Income Tax (CIT) rates. This paper provides a theoretical framework to shed light on these diverging trends. I develop a general equilibrium model that incorporates imperfect competition and strategic interaction among firms, allowing them to shift profits abroad towards a tax haven. I find that increasing firms’ market power enhances their incentives to engage in profit shifting, via larger profits. Profits rise through (i) larger markdowns and (ii) reallocation of market share towards more productive firms. A government, competing to retain firms’ profits, set low tax rates to prevent local firms from evading toward tax haven(s). The competition is stronger, i.e. lower tax rates, when firms’ market power is higher. Besides, I find that profit shifting widens the disparities among ex-ante heterogeneous firms and endogenously increases the level of market power in the economy, favouring the most productive firms

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the contemporary Sardinian author Sergio Atzeni (1952-1995) and to carry out a detailed analyses of his four novels written between 1986 and 1995: Apologo del giudice bandito (1986), Il figlio di Bakunn (1991), Il quinto passo l'addio (1995) and Passavamo sulla terra leggeri (1996), published posthumously. In the early 1970s, after his high school and university studies, Sergio Atzeni works as a journalist for the local daily papers and magazines. He publishes prose works, short stories and poetry that clearly reveal his narrative talent. From the very beginnig of his carreer Atzeni's work is marked by his love for Sardinia which is in the centre of his attention and which makes him write about its history, folklore and people. Yet he is very much aware of the ethnic and existential unrest of his generation and of its failures which he partially shares with it. In 1987, driven also by the bitter disappointment he felt towards the Sardinians who didn't seem to appreciate him adequately, he leaves the island to travel and work in Europe and in various Italian cities, among others Torino and Milano. He settles in Sant'Ilario d'Enza and the most productive period of his life starts. He writes narrative works, translations and essays for many prestigious publishing..

Symmetric polarization-insensitive directional couplers fabricated by femtosecond laser writing

    No full text
We study analytically the polarization behaviour of directional couplers composed of birefringent waveguides, showing that they can induce polarization transformations that depend on the specific input-output path considered. On the basis of this study, we propose and demonstrate experimentally, by femtosecond laser writing, directional couplers that yield a polarization-independent power splitting and, at the same time, preserve the polarization state of the propagating light. More in detail, we devise two di erent approaches to realize such devices: the first one is based on local birefringence engineering by additional refractive index modification tracks, while the second one exploits ultra-low birefringence waveguides (b = 1.2 × 10−6), obtained by thermal annealing

Sergio Atzeni gives the prologue a liminal dimension as in the beginning he systematically works to build a new boundary. This happens in Il quinto passo è l’addio, where Sergio Gunale leaves Sardinia giving a last sight to Cagliari and he feels stranger and estranged enough to quote Lawrence in Sea and Sardinia. It also occurs in Passavamo sulla terra leggeri where the author reinvents the myth and organises a shipwreck as a narrative connection that fits the creation of the story of the S’ard populatio

Thermal Phase Shifters for Femtosecond Laser Written Photonic Integrated Circuits

    No full text
Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are today acknowledged as an effective solution to fulfill the demanding requirements of many practical applications in both classical and quantum optics. Phase shifters integrated in the photonic circuit offer the possibility to dynamically reconfigure its properties in order to fine tune its operation or to produce adaptive circuits, thus greatly extending the quality and the applicability of these devices. In this paper, we provide a thorough discussion of the main problems that one can encounter when using thermal shifters to reconfigure photonic circuits. We then show how all these issues can be solved by a careful design of the thermal shifters and by choosing the most appropriate way to drive them. Such performance improvement is demonstrated by manufacturing thermal phase shifters in femtosecond laser written PICs (FLW-PICs), and by characterizing their operation in detail. The unprecedented results in terms of power dissipation, miniaturization and stability, enable the scalable implementation of reconfigurable FLW-PICs that can be easily calibrated and exploited in the applications

BAKUNIN'S SON, A DIALOGIC NOVEL BY SERGIO ATZENI

Bakunin’s Son, a short novel by Sergio Atzeni, is the perfect embodiment of Bakhtin’s theory of the dialogic novel. The author sets his stories and characters - mostly humble outcast defeated people - in his own homeland, Sardinia. The accurately planned structure as an interview to thirty-two people reflects a multifarious reality with its complex rules and mentality expressed through different points of view, languages and ideologies. The protagonist’s story may result contradictory according to the different opinions of people who met him. Also the choice of a hybrid language contributes to create a highly connoted cultural context. In Bakunin’s Son, in fact, the Italian and the Sardinian overlap in a manner that cannot be distinguished or graphically marked, since form and meaning are fused together.
