    Standardizing DIRAC’s Cloud Interfaces

    No full text
DIRAC is a widely used framework for distributed computing. It provides a layer between users and computing resources by offering a common interface to a number of heterogeneous resource providers. In these proceedings we describe a new implementation of the DIRAC to Cloud interface

Backfilling a cloud with grid jobs

    No full text
Imperial College London hosts a large Tier-2 WLCG grid site based around a HTCondor batch system; additionally it provides cloud computing facilities using OpenStack to non-WLCG activities. These cloud resources are open to opportunistic usage provided the impact on the primary cloud users remains low. In common with most Tier-2 sites we see constant job pressure from the WLCG VOs, while the usage of our cloud is much more intermittent. To allocate grid jobs to the available opportunistic cloud resources we implemented a lightweight backfill system based on the OpenStack Python API

Genotyping of Cryptosporidium spp. isolated from human stool samples in Switzerland

    No full text
In a study to estimate the frequency of Cryptosporidium infections in Switzerland, stool samples from patients found to be positive for Cryptosporidium spp. by modified Ziehl-Neelson staining and fluorescence microscopy were used for genotyping experiments. With 9 of 12 samples, DNA extraction and subsequent genotyping was successful. All Cryptosporidium-isolates belonged to the bovine genotype. In one stool sample, two strains of Cryptosporidium were demonstrated, suggesting a mixed infection. In comparison with reference strains from calves, one of the isolates showed a full sequence identity and the other a similarity of 97.5%. The fact that only bovine genotypes were detected suggests, that cryptosporidiosis must primarily be considered as a zoonotic disease in Switzerland. This is in contrast to other countries, where the human genotype of C. parvum was shown to dominate the epidemiological situation. The results of our study are supported by the previous finding, that two of the analysed strains originated from patients who used to consume raw milk or raw cream, a known risk factor for cryptosporidiosis

    Improved Pilot Logging in DIRAC

    No full text
DIRAC is a widely used framework for distributed computing. It works by building a layer between the users and the resources offering a common interface to a number of heterogeneous providers. DIRAC, like many other workload management systems, uses pilot jobs to check and configure the worker-node environment before fetching a user payload. The log messages generated by these pilot jobs are crucial for diagnosing problems in the infrastructure. In these proceedings we present a configurable, resource independent remote pilot logging system

Data management for the SoLid experiment

    No full text
The SoLid experiment is a short-baseline neutrino project located at the BR2 research reactor in Mol, Belgium. It started data taking in November 2017. Data management, including long term storage will be handled in close collaboration by Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Imperial College London and Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. We describe the SoLid data management model with an emphasis on the software developed for the file distribution on the Grid, the data archiving and the initial data transfer from the experiment to a Grid storage element. We present results from the first six months of data taking, showing how the system performed in a production setting
