Ballots and Barricades: On the Reciprocal Relationship between Elections and Social Movements

Why do two cognate literatures—social movements and electoral studies—travel along parallel paths with little conversation between them? And what can be done to connect them in the future? Drawing on their work with the late Charles Tilly onDynamics of Contention(2001), Doug McAdam and Sidney Tarrow examine two important studies that approach (but do not effect such a linkage), propose a mechanism-based set of linkages between elections and social movements, and apply their approach in a preliminary examination of the relations between the American anti-war movement after 9/11 and the Democratic Party.</jats:p

Movimentos sociais e confronto político: apontamentos sobre o pensamento de Sidney Tarrow

This essay proposes to discuss the main assumptions of Sidney Tarrow’s thought, as well as its consequent contribution to the field which is inserted from three central elements: a) social movements as expression of the political confrontation; b) the outbreak of social movements; c) dynamics and elements of the political struggle. In this sense, the author’s focus on the political dimension and the flow of political confrontation have enabled the development of a field which approaches social movements as historical inventions resulting from the dynamics of political confrontation, distancing itself from systemic conceptual approaches. This study discusses the emergence of a social movement based on farmer independence in Piondo, Central Sulawesi. The movement emerged as a response to the conflict between farmers and PT Kurnia Luwuk Sejati (KLS) and PT Berkat Hutan Pusaka (BHP). The data search was carried out qualitatively with the case study method. The stages of the movement that emerged were read from the perspective of Sidney Tarrow where there were five stages carried out by farmers. Analysis with the survival mechanism perspective of James Scott shows that during the struggle for land acquisition, farmers must reduce the quality of their food, make independent efforts to find additional income, so that a network is formed for them to survive and regain their agricultural land

Changing patterns of centre-periphery relations in Italy: Sidney Tarrow revisited

    No full text
The purpose of this article is to determine how the intergovernmental pattern of integration between subnational levels of government in Italy has evolved in the 1990s and departed from the conclusions of Sidney Tarrow in the 1970s, which emphasized political entrepreneurialism and clientelism in centre–periphery relations in Italy. The decentralization of administrative responsibilities to regional governments for health care services has increased the demand for formalization of integration mechanisms between regions and communes. The traditionally central role of the latter in health care policy has been challenged by the organizational reconfiguration of traditional bases of political control, such as local health authorities. Sidney Tarrow's assumptions need to be revisited in light of the 1990s consolidation of regional welfare bureaucracies. This article argues that intergovernmental relationsbetween regions and communes are increasingly shaped by the formalization of administrative arrangements, aimed at efficient planning and policy coherence
