Mankind have been always utilized their native flora, not only as a source of food but also use for shelter, fuel, clothing, chemical production and healthcare products since ancient time. Traditional medicine (Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) and Yoga are gaining more and more attention all over the world, because of their long historic clinical practice and minimum side effects. Unani system of medicine also a part of traditional medicine, it also gaining more acceptability around the world, but to get the quality of the crude drugs and Unani formulations is still facing lacking of standardization. In this respect internationally recognition related with the quality is necessary. This can be achieved only if the herbal products are evaluated and analyzed using modern scientific tool and technologies of standardization. In this article discuss the various standardization parameters like morphological characters, microscopic evaluation, fluorescence analysis, physicochemical evaluations-proximate analysis (Moisture, ash content), solubility value (alcohol soluble, water soluble and ether soluble), heavy metal analysis and chromatography of botanicals are included. In the present review, various sensory parameters of the plant material (such as colour, odour, size, shape, and taste) were also mentioned of organoleptic evaluation method. Premature Ejaculation (PE) is the most prevalent male sexual complaint worldwide. The ability to control the timing of ejaculation is very important to get pleasure and to maintain the couple’s sexual health. PE is believed to have a multifactorial etiology which mainly includes psychogenic and biogenic factors. Currently available conventional drugs are based on mere assumptions and their use in PE is considered off-label as they have not been approved by the regulatory bodies. On the other hand, Unani System of Medicine has a holistic approach to the prevention and treatment of diseases and provides a line of treatment for PE which is mainly focused on the internal and external use of specific drugs for the restoration of lost powers, elimination of morbid humor and strengthening of organs, muscles, and nerves. In classical Unani literature, PE/Surʻat-i-Inzāl are described in detail under the heading of Amrāz-i-Bāh. In the series of drug therapy a polyherbal Unani formulation, Safūf-i Aslussūs mentioned in different Unani Pharmacopoeias for the management of PE, and Spermatorrhoea is widely prescribed and recommended for a long time by Unani physicians and it is a time-tested drug. This manuscript is an attempt to summarize scientific studies in support of the claim made by Unani physicians regarding Safūf-i Aslussūs. Nematicidal activity of plant extracts against the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita

    No full text
Nematicidal activity of extracts from plants was assayed against Meloidogyne incognita. In laboratory assays extracts from tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L), clove (Syzygium aromaticum L), betelvine (Piper betle L), and sweet flag (Acorus calamus L) were most effective in killing the nematode, with an EC50 that was 5-10 times lower than the EC50 of the synthetic pesticides chlorpyrifos, carbosulfan and deltamethrin. The shapes of the dead nematodes differed in a characteristic way, and groups of pesticides and plant extracts could clearly be distinguished based on this phenomenon, which may be an indicator for the modes of action of the tested pesticides. In a greenhouse bioassay clove bud and betelvine were tested as mulch. Experiments revealed that the total number of live nematodes on roots of pepper plants treated with mulch of the clove bud was 7% of that of the controls and did not differ significantly from that of plants treated with the recommended synthetic pesticide carbofuran. The application of clove buds as a botanical pesticide for future use against nematodes is highly promising since clove is the 6th major plant grown on Bangka Island, and the market value of clove has decreased sharply over the last year

Background: Jawarish Jalinoos (JJ) is a classical semisolid traditional Unani formulation clinically used for the treatment of weakness of vital organs, liver, and stomach. Although JJ has been widely used clinically for several decades, no scientific report is available for its safety. Methods: JJ and its sugar-free tablet version (SFJJ; formulated to target diabetic population) were assessed for safety in rats. Ninety-day repeated dose oral toxicity study was performed as per the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development Guideline 408. JJ was orally administered at the dose of 2000 mg/kg bw/d, whereas SFJJ was orally administered at the doses of 506 mg/kg body weight (bw)/d, 1012 mg/kg bw/d, and 2024 mg/kg bw/d for 90 days. The animals were periodically observed for clinical signs of toxicity, mortality, morbidity, body weight changes, and feed consumption. At the end of the study, hematology, clinical biochemistry, electrolytes, gross pathology, relative organ weight, and histological examination were performed. Results: Treatment with SFJJ and JJ showed no significant differences in body weight gain, feed consumption, hematology, clinical biochemistry, and serum electrolytes. No gross pathological findings and differences in relative organ weights were observed between control and drug treated rats. Histological examination revealed no toxicologically significant abnormalities related with SFJJ or JJ treatment. Conclusion: The 90-day repeated dose oral toxicity study demonstrates that the no observed adverse effect level of SFJJ and JJ is greater than 2024 mg/kg bw/d and 2000 mg/kg bw/d (p.o.) in rats, respectively. Both formulations were found to be safe up to the tested dose levels and experimental conditions, and therefore safe for clinical use as specified in the literature

Since many years back Unani medicines were used by the Unani physicians for treating the diseases ailments. In USM most of the drugs are of plant origin and their therapeutic effects are due to the presence of active phytochemicals. The proper standardization methods must be necessary for preparation of formulations otherwise secondary metabolites or active constituents might not be up to the quality. The standard operating procedures (SOP’s) are adopted for the preparation of Unani formulation. This study evaluated the quality of polyherbal unani formulation Habb-i-Shahtara, which is used in the treatment of skin diseases. The standardization parameters which were used for the development of quality standard of the study formulation were pharmacognostical studies, physicochemical and phytochemical parameters, HPTLC analysis, microbial load, aflatoxins, heavy metals and pesticide residues determination to evaluate the pharmacopoeial standard. The polyherbal Unani formulation Habb-i-Shahtara have been successfully standardized and the data and procedures which were used may serve the guidelines and standard reference in future for the preparation of formulation and for further study
