    Cytological findings in routine voided urine samples with hematuria from a tertiary care center in south India

    Background: Regardless of the availability of newer and more sophisticated modalities of investigation, urinary tract cytology still remains the most commonly used non-invasive test for the diagnosis of bladder cancer. Aims: As hematuria is the commonest presenting symptom in patients with malignancy of urinary tract, we undertook this study to know the usefulness of urine cytology in evaluation of the hematuric patients for malignancy. Materials and Methods: A total of 21,557 fresh voided urine samples received at our tertiary care referral centre over a period of three years were included in the study. Of these, 1428 cases had hematuria, criteria of either gross or microscopic. Results: Among these hematuric cases included in the study, 32.5% (464 cases) were found to have positive finding of atypical cells. In these cases with atypia, 9.5% (136 cases) were proved to have malignancy both with the histopathological biopsy and cystoscopic findings. Other cases of atypia were found to be of reactive origin, either due to instrumentation or foreign body. A large number of hematuric cases, that is, 964 cases (67.5%) were negative for atypical cells. Conclusions: The limited ability of urine cytology to detect low grade bladder tumors, its subjectivity and lack of uniformity in reporting, all render urine cytology a less than perfect tool. With added collaboration between clinician and cytopathologist, urine cytology can be used an adjunct tool in evaluation of patients with hematuria

    Biopsy series of acute kidney injury from a tertiary care referral center in south India

    Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in hospital patients and more so in critically ill patients. It is frequent, harmful and potentially treatable condition. In a total of 243 renal biopsies 130 cases fulfilled the criteria of acute kidney injury. The usual mode of presentation was renal failure followed by acute nephritis. Histopathologically acute interstitial nephritis was the usual finding followed by post infectious-glomerular nephritis. The acute renal failure (ARF) prognosis is influenced by the co-morbidity states and we had a high mortality of 8.46% in our referral centre

    The research paper aims at exploring the narrative aesthetics of Tamil science fiction in which the author takes twenty-first-century politics in India within the context of technological singularity. The article presents the political situation and totalitarianism in the age of technological singularity. The research focuses on the social impacts of artificial intelligence’s ability to read, learn, think, and act against its pre-programmed mechanism. A robotic dog struggles to restore a democratic political system from autocracy. The dystopian fictions “En Iniya Iyanthira” and “Meendum Jeeno” written by Sujatha Ranganathan depict the cognitive power of super intelligence behind a woman’s political actions to protect the people of India from exploitation, and corruption to create a better future. The paper demonstrates what a world without individual freedom looks like under the digital surveillance system of a totalitarian regime. The paper raises the question of what happens when a robot develops its rationality and mimics human behaviour. In these fictions, humans attempt to destroy the robotic dog. The robotic dog reaches a standard where nothing can destroy it. The paper explores the ways the robotic dog gains the knowledge to understand and practice the concept of humanity. The paper concludes with the post-humanistic conflicts between a woman and a robotic dog in emotional, ethical, and political aspects

    Hydrogen mobility in the lightest reversible metal hydride, LiBeH3

    abstract: Lithium-beryllium metal hydrides, which are structurally related to their parent compound, BeH[subscript 2], offer the highest hydrogen storage capacity by weight among the metal hydrides (15.93 wt. % of hydrogen for LiBeH[subscript 3]). Challenging synthesis protocols have precluded conclusive determination of their crystallographic structure to date, but here we analyze directly the hydrogen hopping mechanisms in BeH[subscript 2] and LiBeH[subscript 3] using quasielastic neutron scattering, which is especially sensitive to single-particle dynamics of hydrogen. We find that, unlike its parent compound BeH[subscript 2], lithium-beryllium hydride LiBeH[subscript 3] exhibits a sharp increase in hydrogen mobility above 265 K, so dramatic that it can be viewed as melting of hydrogen sublattice. We perform comparative analysis of hydrogen jump mechanisms observed in BeH[subscript 2] and LiBeH[subscript 3] over a broad temperature range. As microscopic diffusivity of hydrogen is directly related to its macroscopic kinetics, a transition in LiBeH[subscript 3] so close to ambient temperature may offer a straightforward and effective mechanism to influence hydrogen uptake and release in this very lightweight hydrogen storage compound.The final version of this article, as published in Scientific Reports, can be viewed online at: http://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-16504-

    Inflammatory Pseudo Tumour of Prostate

    A 60 year old man presented with history of overflow incontinence, requiring catherization. Digital rectal examination revealed non tender grade II prostatomegaly. Patient underwent transurethral resection of prostate and specimen was sent for histopathological examination. The specimen revealed spindle cell proliferation interspersed with chronic inflammation. Immunohistochemical staining was positive for smooth muscle actin and desmin. A final diagnosis of inflammatory pseudotumour of prostate was made. The patient was later discharged and advised for regular follow up. Inflammatory pseudotumour is very rare condition of prostate. They usually follow benign course and does not require radical surgical treatment. So a definitive diagnosis is essential to prevent unnecessary radical procedures
