    FIR filter synthesis using the adaptive RLS algorithm

    This project compares and contrasts computer program implementations of the traditional adaptive LMS FIR lowpass filter synthesis and a new adaptive RLS FIR lowpass filter synthesis method developed by the author. A performance comparison for the RLS and LMS algorithms is presented. Examples comparing the adaptation rate and the frequency response for several different filter lengths are included. Implementation issues are also discussed, including the effects of iteration count, numerical precision, and computational complexity. The comparison suggests that the RLS algorithm provides slightly better error performance at the cost of additional computational complexity.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 75-76)California State University, Northridge.     Crossing the Rubicon: making a case for refining the classification of Jihadist Terrorism

    This paper posits that our current understanding of Jihadist Terrorism as a monolithic sub-type of Political Terrorism is flawed and that as a result our governments counter this threat with inappropriately-adapted methods. The author argues: (A) There is a sub-type of Jihadist Terrorism that is more consistent with Walter’s ‘Military Terrorism’ or Feldman and Hinojosa’s ‘Guerrilla Warfare’ than within the typology of Political Terrorism; (B) The author-proposed sub-type of ‘War Terrorism’ should be accepted, examined, defined, and established; and (C) Establishing the author’s sub-type will allow western democracies to devise better counter-terrorism strategies while protecting the civil liberties of their citizens.Publisher PD

    Bioactive alkaloids from Nepalese Corydalis chaerophylla D.C. acting on the regulation of PCSK9 and LDL-R in vitro

    Four new alkaloids Chaeronepaline-A (1), Chaeronepaline-B (2), Chaeronepaline-C (3), and Chaeronepaline-D (4) were isolated from Corydalis chaerophylla D.C. collected from Nepal and their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic data, 1D, 2D NMR and mass spectrometry. The structures were established as 3,12- Dimethoxy-5,6-dihydroisoquinolino [2,1-b] isoquinolin- 7- ium- 2, 9- diol (1), 7-Methyl-2,3 : 11,12-bis(methylenedioxy)-7,13a-secoberbin-13-14-epoxide (2), 7- methyl-5, 6, 7, 8- tetrahydro- 8H-spiro-9,14-dihydroxy-11,12-methylenedioxy-indane-isoquinoline (3) and 7- methyl-5, 6, 7, 8- tetrahydro- 8H-spiro-9,14-dihydroxy-11,12-methylenedioxy-indane-isoquinoline-N-oxide (4). The new alkaloids were tested in human hepatoma cell line to assess their ability to modulate the expression of low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDL-R), of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) and to affect cellular cholesterol biosynthesis with the aim to evaluate their potential hypocholesterolemic effect. Results indicated that compounds 2 and 3 upregulate the LDLR, and inhibited the cholesterol biosynthesis with compound 2, which also reduced the secretion of PCSK9 by Huh7 cells. These in vitro data indicated a potential hypocholesterolemic effect of compound 2 that requires further in vivo validation

    Fast extraction of somatosensory evoked potential using RLS adaptive filter algorithms

    This paper evaluates the efficacy of the recursive least squares (RLS) in adaptive noise canceller (RLS-ANC) for fast extraction of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). The RLSANC method was verified by simulation of electroencephalography (EEG) and Gaussian noise contaminated SEP signals at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). RLS was found to converge faster than the least mean squares (LMS) algorithm in ANC, i.e. SEP extraction by RLS-ANC required fewer trials than LMS-ANC. Experimental results showed that RLS-ANC with less than 50 trials could provide similar performance in SEP extraction to those extracted by the conventional ensemble averaging with 500 trials even at SNR of - 20dB. ©2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 2nd International Congress on Image and Signal Processing (CISP 2009), Tianjin, China, 17-19 October 2009.     Hindi translation and validation of Cambridge-Hopkins Diagnostic Questionnaire for RLS (CHRLSq)

    Background: Restless legs syndrome also known as Willis-Ekbom′s Disease (RLS/WED) is a common illness. Cambridge-Hopkins diagnostic questionnaire for RLS (CHRLSq) is a good diagnostic tool and can be used in the epidemiological studies. However, its Hindi version is not available. Thus, this study was conducted to translate and validate it in the Hindi speaking population. Materials and Methods: After obtaining the permission from the author of the CHRLSq, it was translated into Hindi language by two independent translators. After a series of forward and back translations, the finalized Hindi version was administered to two groups by one of the authors, who were blinded to the clinical diagnosis. First group consisted of RLS/WED patients, where diagnosis was made upon face to face interview and the other group - the control group included subjects with somatic symptoms disorders or exertional myalgia or chronic insomnia. Each group had 30 subjects. Diagnosis made on CHRLSq was compared with the clinical diagnosis. Statistical Analysis: Analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v 21.0. Descriptive statistics was calculated. Proportions were compared using chi-square test; whereas, categorical variables were compared using independent sample t-test. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value of the translated version of questionnaire were calculated. Results: Average age was comparable between the cases and control group (RLS/WED = 39.1 ± 10.1 years vs 36.2 ± 11.4 years in controls; P = 0.29). Women outnumbered men in the RLS/WED group (87% in RLS/WED group vs 57% among controls; χ2 = 6.64; P = 0.01). Both the sensitivity and specificity of the translated version was 83.3%. It had the positive predictive value of 86.6%. Conclusion: Hindi version of CHRLSq has positive predictive value of 87% and it can be used to diagnose RLS in Hindi speaking population

    A computationally efficient leaky and regularized RLS filter for its short length

    A Tikhonov regularized RLS algorithm with an exponential weighting factor, i.e., a leaky RLS (LRLS) algorithm was proposed by the author. A quadratic version of the LRLS algorithm also exists in the literature of adaptive filters. In this letter, a cubic version of the LRLS filter which is computationally efficient is proposed when the length of the adaptive filter is short. The proposed LRLS filter includes only a divide per iteration although its multiplications and additions increase in number. Simulation results show that the proposed LRLS filter is faster for its short length than the existing quadratic version of the LRLS filter.     From the ‘freedom of the streets’: a biographical study of culture and social change in the life and work of writer Jack Common (1903-1968)

    The author assesses the life and work of the Newcastle upon Tyne born writer Jack Common in the light of the massive social, economic and cultural changes which have affected the North East of England and wider society through the period of Common's life and afterwards. He seeks to point out the relevance of Common to the present day in terms of his ideas about class, community and the individual and in the light of Common's sense of rebelliousness influenced by a process of grass-roots education and self-improvement. In addition, he draws upon his own extensive experience in community arts and education, looking, in particular, at the work he and others have carried out on Common over the last thirty years and assessing its value in the light of recent political changes. The author draws together the range of biographical and literary criticism carried out by a range of individuals over this period of time and brings into print hitherto unpublished material about Common's life and work by interviewing family members and associates, exploring the Common Archive at Newcastle University and other largely ignored sources, and studying Common's significant association with George Orwell in great detail. Through all of this, he seeks to argue that Common's life and ideas remain worthy of close attention in the present day

    Adaptive Optimal Flight Control for a Fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle using Incremental Value Iteration

    This paper deals with the design of an adaptive optimal controller for a fixed-wing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) using an incremental value iteration algorithm. The incremental model is firstly introduced to linearize a nonlinear system. The recursive least squares(RLS) identification algorithm is then used to identify the incremental model. Based on incremental control, the incremental value iteration algorithm is developed for a nonlinear optimal control problem. Moreover, this algorithm is applied to longitudinal attitude tracking of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle.     Validation of a novel 3D printed positioning device and dynamic radiographic technique to quantify rotational laxity of the stifle in dogs

    Cranial cruciate ligament deficiency (CCLD) results in internal rotational instability of the stifle (RLS). By contrast, tibial torsion (TT) is an anatomical feature of the tibia along its longitudinal axis. The objective of this study was to validate a dynamic radiographic technique to measure internal rotational laxity of the stifle and differentiate it from TT. Models included transection of the CCL for RLS and an osteotomy for TT. One limb within eight pairs of canine cadaveric hind limbs was randomly assigned to CCLD. The contralateral limb underwent TT, followed by CCLD. Neutral and stress radiographs were taken with the limb in a custom rotating 3-D printed positioning device before and after each modification. The position of the calcaneus on neutral views and the magnitude of its displacement under standardized torque were compared within limbs and between groups. Transection of the CCL increased the magnitude of displacement of the calcaneus by 1.6 mm (0.3–3.1 mm, p < 0.05) within limbs. The lateral calcaneal displacement (dS-dN) tended to be greater when CCLD limbs were compared to limbs with intact CCL. A magnitude of calcaneal displacement of 3.45 mm differentiated limbs with RLS from intact limbs with 87.5% sensitivity and 68.7% specificity. The calcaneus was displaced further laterally by about 3 mm on neutral radiographs (dN) when limbs with experimental TT were compared to those without TT (p < 0.05). A calcaneus located at least 3.25 mm from the sulcus differentiated limbs with TT from intact limbs with 87.5% sensitivity and 87.5% specificity. The technique reported here allowed detection of RLS, especially within limbs. A calcaneus located at least 3.25 mm on neutral radiographs of large dogs should prompt a presumptive diagnosis of TT.Western University of Health Science
