    An Online Knowledge-Based Support System

    No full text
Technology advances have touched all the fields of human life, and the educational system is not an exception. Students in Nigerian universities experience challenges in their early or later stages of school due to a lack of a knowledge-based support system. This results in massive failure and confusion in later days in school. A knowledge-based online support system has been developed and implemented in this paper to improve academic support services for students and faculty members in the university. The need for such a support system stems from the various academic problems that the students often experience, including a lack of answers to certain questions, which can result in academic failure, taking too long to graduate, or dropping out of the university altogether. The system is web-based; therefore, users can access the necessary information when needed, and, in most cases, it solves common academic issues in a short time using the web. Following the Agile software development methodology and employing a client-server architecture, the system was designed in a user-friendly and efficient manner. Highlights of the system include an extensive database of FAQs, real-time interactive services, and multi-typed query handling. Testing phases were performed and integrated, and modular testing showed that the system worked as intended, providing valid inputs and also flagging any invalid inputs without causing the system failures, and performing provisions for user corrections. The results suggest that the online support system could enhance the academic environment at AE-FUNAI and therefore would benefit students and staff members alike. Nevertheless, certain limitations still prevail, such as poor internet access, which calls for constant enhancement and provision of support to the system

This paper presents an in-depth assessment of four notable GitOps tools: Argo CD, Flux, Jenkins X, and Weaveworks. GitOps is a methodology used for the uninterrupted delivery of cloud-native applications, facilitating the seamless encapsulation of infrastructure as code. The study presents these assessments based on key effectiveness indices, including performance, scalability, integration, usability, and security. It contains benchmark tests to demonstrate the applicability of each tool in various multi-cloud and hybrid-cloud scenarios, as well as other realistic settings.Furthermore, the paper examines the security aspect of these tools and their relevance as one of the components of DevSecOps. The book also presents case studies that show how organisations have used these tools, highlighting both the benefits and drawbacks of their application. The result presents a matrix for decision-making for organisations that wish to implement the GitOps mode of operation within their DevOps workflows in both small and large organisational contexts. This section examines the prospects of GitOps and explains its necessity in the context of emerging developments in cloud-native development, with special emphasis on scalability and security issues

Microcontroller-Based Temperature Controlled DC Fan Using Atmega328

    No full text
Technology at this time completely occupies the lifestyle of human beings. Even though there is such an advancement in technology, there are still people whose lifestyles are very far from this advancement. The goals of this research are to enable an electric fan to change its speed level automatically in response to temperature changes and to design an automatic fan system that can vary its speed level in response to changes in the environment's temperature. The designed technology creates an atmosphere in which the fan speed is controlled by the system rather than the user. This fan automatically controls itself by sensing the temperature of the room and regulating itself to suit the temperature of the room

Women in African Drama: Representation and role

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the representation and role of women in African theatre. The discussion is based on published and unpublished plays by African writers selected from a pan-African perspective. The thesis is divided into two major parts: Women in Society; The Portrayal of Women by Major Playwrights. Part I follows a thematic approach aimed at examining the position of women in three different areas which form the chapters for the part : Women, Tradition and Social Change; The Urban Woman and Women in Politics. Part II of the thesis analyses major African playwrights' presentation of women characters. This part discusses not only the characterization of women by major playwrights but also these writers' attitude towards women and women's issues. Examined here in two chapters are The Portrayal of Women by Major Male Playwrights and The Portrayal of Women by Major Female Playwrights. Chapter 1, 'Women, Tradition and Social Change' discusses selected playwrights' examination of African women's experiences in the traditional African setting as a major foundation of the present and future socio-political situation of the continent; this chapter is the springboard of the study. From the traditional milieu the study then moves on to the relatively new urban environment. This Chapter examines the predicaments in which the African woman finds herself as she struggles to survive in a world which differs significantly from the traditional one. Survival in the urban environment demands a certain degree of autonomy from communal ties on the part of the individual. Yet in the case of the African woman, society does not hesitate to censure her movements and even to point an accusing finger at her for failing to satisfy traditional expectations when she is genuinely trying to meet the challenges presented by life in towns. The myth that a woman's place is exclusively in the kitchen is a widespread one the world over. A more negative myth found in Africa is that participation of women in public affairs leads to social disaster. The third chapter of this study examines the role of African women in politics in the traditional and contemporary periods. The fourth chapter discusses the portrayal of women by major male playwrights. Of great significance in this analysis is the attitude of these male writers towards women and also towards issues affecting women. It is for this reason that cross-references are made between these male writers and the female playwrights examined in Chapter 5. Very negligible research has been done on drama by African women. It is in recognition of this unfortunate situation that the fifth and last chapter of this thesis is dedicated to women's self-perception as reflected in their portrayal of fellow-women in theatre. This chapter examines only major female playwrights; the minor female playwrights are examined alongside the male in the appropriate areas in Chapters 1 to 3

Editorial This Issue of Lagos Notes & Records contains a range of scholarly, engaging and well-researched theoretical and data-driven papers in key disciplines in the humanities. Although the different articles are diverse in terms of topics and subjects, they all unite around the concerns within the disciplines of the humanities. In the first paper, “Chinua Achebe’s Engagement with City Life in No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People”, Lola Akande goes beyond the usual approach to Achebe’s works, the cultural consequences of the unequal interaction between Nigerian peoples and the colonial overlords. The author calls our attention to Achebe’s no less nuanced treatment of city life in No Longer at Ease and A Man of the People, two novels set in early post-Independence Nigeria. In another article on literature in English from the genre of drama, “‘Crisis of the Soul’: Religious Trauma and Hypocrisy in Selected Plays of Ahmed Yerima”, Bosede Afolayan furthers the discourse of postcolonial contradiction in contemporary African society when she examines Ahmed Yerima’s apparent fixation with the theme of religious disharmony. Osita Nwangbo’s “Identity and Language Attitudes among Sierra Leonean Refugees in Oru Camp, Ogun State, Nigeria” is a sociolinguistic investigation of the social-linguistic intercourse between Sierra Leonean speakers of Mende, Temne and Limba and their Nigerian Yoruba hosts in the Oru refugee camp. Orimogunje Oladele Caleb’s “The Salient Issues in the Yorùbá Indigenous Health-related Verbal Art” discusses the socio-mythical approach to the health-related belief system in Yorùbá culture. In Sirajudeen Owosho’s “Cartesian Foundation of Husserlian Phenomenology: A Critical Appraisal”, yet another attempt is made to show how much Western philosophy has been a response to the writings of the man dubbed the father of modern Western philosophy: Rene Descartes (1596-1650); Edmund Gustav Albrecht Husserl (1859-1938) is, thus, shown to have been significantly influenced by that precursor philosopher. Dan Ekere explores the thesis that scepticism is a theory of knowledge and an instrument for the advancement, affirmation and consolidation of knowledge in his paper, “The Heuristic Value of Scepticism”. He establishes the point that scepticism, which in a sense is criticism, rather than destroy, builds a system of knowledge that is stronger for as long as it is done with an open mind. On their part, Emmanuel Irokanulo and Blaise Gbaden point out the relationship between visual art and philosophy, suggesting that visual art is creativity just as creativity is philosophy; their paper is titled “Painting as an Object of Philosophy”. Still on visual art, Chinyere Ndubuisi reports the major contribution of pioneer modern Nigerian artists as the philosophy of natural synthesis in which precolonial Nigerian forms and motifs were blended with the best of European tradition. Friday Aworawo’s paper, “The Nature of Threat to Nigeria’s Defence Policy in a Fluctuating World Order: A Historical Analysis”, aims to show how erroneous assessment of a country’s defence position in the international system may result in underestimation or overestimation which will produce wrong policy options. He therefore advocates cooperation between Nigeria and her closest neighbours as well as the Great Powers. Still on the international dimension, Peter Akinwale advocates linguistic sustainability when he argues that Nigeria-France cultural interactions should involve mutual interchange in the ‘Francophonie’ even if French would be adopted as a second official language in Nigeria. Akinwale makes his call in “Feasibility of Nigeria’s Future Membership of the “Francophonie”. Finally, this volume features two reviews. Oluwaseyi Kehinde reviews Albert Oikelome’s Lets Teach You to Sing, a detailed discourse on the nature and function of the singing voice, while Charles Ogbulogo reviews a special issue of Research in English and Applied Linguistics (Vol. 9) – Essays on Language in Societal Transformation: A Festschrift in Honour of Segun Awonusi. Ogbulogo provides a balanced critique of the twenty-three entries comprising the four sections of the special issue. The book is a collection of scholarly papers in linguistics, literature, pedagogy and education management. We are confident that scholars and researchers will continue to find contributions in our issues of Lagos Notes & Records to be a very enriching and rewarding repository of knowledge and research findings that will enhance development both in academia and the larger society. The editorial board will continue to encourage and promote transdisciplinary academic discourse that will contribute to knowledge within the humanities. I congratulate all the contributors whose papers scaled through the rigorous peer review mechanism. Equally, I deeply appreciate our panel of reviewers for their usual support. Characterising acute and chronic care needs: insights from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    No full text
Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s)
