Impact of Atomic Defects on Ceria Surfaces on Chemical Mechanical Polishing of Silica Glass Surfaces

    No full text
This study investigates the impact of atomic defects, such as oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ ions, on cerium oxide (ceria) surfaces during chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) for silica glass finishing. Using density functional theory (DFT) and reactive molecular dynamics simulations, the interaction of orthosilicic molecules and silica glass with dry and wet ceria surfaces is explored. Defects alter the surface reactivity, leading to the dissociation of orthosilicic acid on oxygen vacancies, forming a strong Si–O–Ce bond. Hydroxylated surfaces exhibit easier oxygen vacancy formation and thermodynamically favored substitution of hydroxyl groups with orthosilicic acid. A new ReaxFF library for silica/ceria interfaces with defects is validated using DFT outcomes. Reactive MD simulations demonstrate that ceria surfaces with 30% Ce3+ ions on (111) planes exhibit higher polishing efficiency, attributed to increased Si–O–Ce bond formation. The simultaneous presence of oxygen vacancies and various acidic and basic sites on ceria surfaces enhances the polishing efficiency, involving acid–base reactions with silica. Defective surfaces show superior efficiency by removing silicate chains, contrasting with nondefective surfaces removing isolated orthosilicate units. This study provides insights into optimizing CMP processes for high-precision glass industry surface finishing

Electric potential changes prior to shear fracture in dry and saturated rocks

    No full text
Electric potential changes before shear rupture were measured using Darley Dale sandstone (quartz-rich) and Icelandic basalt (quartz-free) on both dry specimens and in the presence of pore fluid. We find that electric potential changed markedly just prior to dynamic rupture in dry and saturated sandstones and saturated basalt but we did not detect precursory signals in dry basalt. The absence of signals in dry basalt provides strong evidence that the piezoelectric effect and electrokinetic effect are dominant sources for precursory signals. Moreover we find that the amplitude of the precursory signals due to electrokinetic effect in saturated sandstone were as large as the coseismic signals. We propose that this signal is caused by accelerating evolution of dilatancy as cracks grow in the rock before rupture, resulting in water flow into the dilatant region with an electric current produced concurrently

WEAKLY INTERACTING MASSIVE PARTICLE DARK MATTER AND FIRST STARS: SUPPRESSION OF FRAGMENTATION IN PRIMORDIAL STAR FORMATION

    No full text
We present the first three-dimensional simulations to include the effects of dark matter annihilation feedback during the collapse of primordial minihalos. We begin our simulations from cosmological initial conditions and account for dark matter annihilation in our treatment of the chemical and thermal evolution of the gas. The dark matter is modeled using an analytical density profile that responds to changes in the peak gas density. We find that the gas can collapse to high densities despite the additional energy input from the dark matter. No objects supported purely by dark matter annihilation heating are formed in our simulations. However, we find that dark matter annihilation heating has a large effect on the evolution of the gas following the formation of the first protostar. Previous simulations without dark matter annihilation found that protostellar disks around Population III stars rapidly fragmented, forming multiple protostars that underwent mergers or ejections. When dark matter annihilation is included, however, these disks become stable to radii of 1000 AU or more. In the cases where fragmentation does occur, it is a wide binary that is formed

Integrated urban flood design in the United States and the Netherlands

    No full text
Spatial design integrates social, cultural, economic, and political perspectives with natural site conditions and man-made construction to plan for sustainable urban development. The current flood-risk-related challenges induced by climate change place pressure on designing cities in which both natural and man-made conditions can be imbalanced. Creating a purely engineered line of flood defense to restore this balance does not always work. The idea of living more closely with water includes the discipline of spatial design more into flood risk management than the current dominant paradigm. Following the probability approach defined as risk = probability × consequences, the current Dutch paradigm is focused on reducing the probability with dikes; the United States focuses on reduction of consequences by evacuation and recovery. This chapter focuses on urban design and planning strategies for reducing flood risk not just by a flood defense line such as a dike, but also reducing risk by means of urban development behind the dike. Integrated urban flood design must integrate site-built environment characteristics and natural systems, and simultaneously solve challenges posed by hazards. Effective design, therefore, must be conducted on the basis of hydraulic engineering knowledge, leading to spatial designs that introduce resilient urban qualities. Two cases for this approach are presented and compared: Vlissingen, the Netherlands and Galveston, Texas, United States.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Environmental Technology and DesignSpatial Planning and Strateg
