(A-LIEP 2011)Exploring the Skills and Competencies of Information Professionals for Knowledge Management in the Information Institutions of Bangladesh / Md. Abul Kalam Siddike and Md Shiful Islam
The aim of the study is to explore the views of information professionals for knowledge management (KM) in the libraries/information institutions of Bangladesh. Research Questions-This paper seeks to address the following research questions: How the information professionals of Bangladesh perceive the views of KM? What are likely to be the skills required by the information professionals of Bangladesh for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh? and what are likely to be the critical success factors for encouraging KM in the information institutions of Bangladesh? The methodology includes a quantitative approach. The study has been conducted through a survey using a pre-structured questionnaire. A short and structured questionnaire was sent to 50 information professionals who had been working in different libraries of Bangladesh through email and/or by post. The respondents were selected from 6 divisions of Bangladesh (25 respondents from Dhaka division, 5 each in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barishal and Sylhet division). We received 30 responses, for a response rate 60%. The results of the study show that that 93.24% of the respondents first read about KM in the literature, but none had taken any courses on KM. Only 6.76% of the respondents had attended a workshop on KM. Findings also yield that most of the professionals believe that communication skills, facilitation skills, coaching skills, mentoring skills, networking skills, negotiating skills, consensus building skills and team working skills are inevitable for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. This paper also suggests some critical success factors for encouraging the information professionals to KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. It investigates the original views of the library and information professionals of Bangladesh regarding the skills and competences of information professionals for KM in the libraries of Bangladesh. The department of Information Science and Library Management of Dhaka University and Rajshahi University should introduce KM course(s) either in the graduate level or in the post-graduate leve
Calm water resistance prediction of a bulk carrier using Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes based solver
Maneuverability and resistance prediction with suitable accuracy is essential for optimum ship design and propulsion power prediction. This paper aims at providing some of the maneuverability characteristics of a Japanese bulk carrier model, JBC in calm water using a computational fluid dynamics solver named SHIP_Motion and OpenFOAM. The solvers are based on the Reynolds average Navier-Stokes method (RaNS) and solves structured grid using the Finite Volume Method (FVM). This paper comprises the numerical results of calm water test for the JBC model with available experimental results. The calm water test results include the total drag co-efficient, average sinkage, and trim data. Visualization data for pressure distribution on the hull surface and free water surface have also been included. The paper concludes that the presented solvers predict the resistance and maneuverability characteristics of the bulk carrier with reasonable accuracy utilizing minimum computational resources

Conversion of African Americans to Islam : a sociological analysis of the Nation of Islam and associated groups
'Conversion of African Americans to Islam: A Sociological Analysis of the Nation of
Islam Associated groups' is an empirical study of the religious experience of people
who had/have distinctive features in terms of race, ethnicity and historical experience.
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how African Americans' (AAs) conversion
experience in general, and the Nation of Islam associated groups' conversion in
particular, differ from the studies of recruitment and conversion in the sociology of
religion and New Religion Movements (NRMs). More specifically, their recruitment
and conversion experiences to Islam diverge from those who converted to mainstream
Islam. The study investigates how AAs' historical experience, soci-economic
difficulties and the racism they encountered shaped and influenced their religious
understanding.
Research methods involved participant observations, a survey questionnaire, interviews,
conversations, personal communications and correspondence. To collect ethnographic
data eleven months field research was conducted mainly in the Chicago area and on two
short visits to Detroit, and three years continued communications with Muslim officials
and academics in the area. During the field research and afterwards through personal
communication 181 survey questionnaire responses were received, and 23 Muslim
officials, academics and ordinary Muslims were interviewed through semi-structured,
unstructured interviews, conversation and correspondence.
The thesis begins with a brief history of Islam and Muslims in general and the African
American Muslims (AAMs) in particular. More emphasis is given on the historical
development of the Nation of Islam (NOl). Then in Chapter III, discussions of schisms
in the history of the NOT are examined from sociological perspectives of social and
religious movements. In Chapter IV I aimed to formulate my own perspective to
analyse and study the conversion experiences of AAMs to Islam. I used a multivariate
approach, considering selectively widely held conversion and recruitment theories in the
sociology of the religion. I consider in Chapter V the predisposing conditions for AAMs
that influence their decision-making to join in the NOT, for example, political and
nationalistic sentiments and socio-economic deprivations. In Chapter VI I have applied
different terms to describe their religious experiences, such as conversion, alteration and
reversion. I have analysed further their encounters with the NOT, the methods of
recruitment they used and their major motives for joining the NOT and converting to
Tslam. In the concluding chapters (Chapter VII VTTT) I describe the different responses
of AAMS to Islam following the death of Elijah Muhammad. It is found out that the
Islamic appeal has polarised. While Farakhan's NOT appeared to continue the tradition
and style of the old NOI with the emphasis on nationalistic and socio-economic factors,
Tmam W. D. Mohammed's community turned more to the religious and spiritual aspects
of Tslam. These different approaches led to a polarisation of the appeal of Tslam to
AAMS.
This thesis contributes to knowledge in four key areas; the sociology of religion and
religious movements, the sociology of social and nationalistic movements, religious and

Hubungan Islam dan Negara dalam Negara Hukum: Analisis Pemikiran Moh. Mahfud MD
The battle between Islam and the state is well-known, as it began during the process of establishing the Indonesian state, resulting in the division of the country into two groups: Islamic nationalists and secular nationalists. Pancasila, according to Mahfud MD, is a collection of factors aimed at resolving divisions. The purpose of this study is to describe how Moh. Mahfud MD views the link between Islam and the state, what his background is, and how the relationship between Islam and the state functions in a state of law. The author compares the viewpoints of many figures on this subject using a qualitative method with a normative approach. According to the study\u27s findings, Moh. Mahfud MD believes that while religion does not rule the state, the state\u27s structure is a creation rather than a product of political science. The reason for Moh. Mahfud MD\u27s ideas is that they bear a resemblance to Nahdatul Ulama, as Mahfud is involved in alumni activities and was formerly a member. Islam and the state in a state of law share a shared goal: both maintain the democratic system in order to protect human rights. Keywords: Islam; State; State of Law; Pancasila AbstrakPerdebatan Islam dan negara sudah tidak asing lagi, mengingat konflik ini dimulai ketika menentukan dasar negara Indonesia yang mengakibatkan perpecahan menjadi dua golongan antara nasionalis Islam dan nasionalis sekuler.

Islam and gender: The Bangladesh perspective
This book contains English essays on gender issues the author Shah Abdul Hannan originally wrote in Bangla over more than two decades. As part of his continuing quest for justice, he has been passionate about establishing gender egalitarianism in Bangladesh society. Even though the sociocultural reality of Bangladesh has been at the back of his mind while penning his thoughts transmitted in these essays, they can be effective in addressing gender disparities in other societies as well. The crux of his arguments with regard to gender issues corresponds with what the emerging Islamic feminist discourse promotes, that is, the best way to address gender inequities and gender based discrimination is to go back to the teachings of Islam. At the same time, Shah Abdul Hannan believes, it is important to understand the primary sources of Islam – the Qur’an and the Sunnah – in the context of contemporary concerns and perspectives. This book should be highly useful to all those who are interested in Islam and gender as well as policy makers and researchers in this field
